...and I bet this has been talked about abunch, but I recently got a copy of the Clapton italian broadcast and I am a huge ABB fan, huge Duane fan and huge Derek fan...I truly believe he was put on this earth to further the music Duane created with of course all the other musicians, and I guess I am a little biased towards Clapton about Layla and how he should have given Duane credit writing wise as we all know that song is what it is because of Duane in fact the whole Derek and the dominoes flew because of Duanes wind of inspiration, any how...I feel like I understand why Derek jumped at the chance to play with Clapton and I know how Duane felt about him and his playing and i am hip to dereks whole thing about playing apart to better the whole of the band, and here it comes ....BUT..I feel both happy and sad when i hear this show, happy when I hear "I am yours" sad when i hear "nobody knows you when your down and out"as I understand the version the dominoes recorded was an arrangement Duane brought to the table ...well anyway like i said more to the point...I feell like in ways derek is kind of Harnessed and i know it is a Clapton gig and not a derek gig but the endings i have heard and seen Derek do in the song Layla with the ABB absolutely blows away the version and arrangement they are doing on this tour....Derek is absolutely the best..and his humility is like a true extension of Duanes and I think if there was anyone to play these songs with Clapton it should be him...I guess i just have a hard time hearing 'wonderful tonight" and i also know that if they would just play a different setlist and songs it would win my opinion of Eric alittle more as the shows seem kind of Vegas/showcase with moments of brilliant music as opposed to just a smoking band playing their hearts out for us....but then again I am the same guy who loved the Stones and loved the Some girls tour but cannot stand the huge stage and shows they do now with the changing wardrobe between songs and I know the Clapton Tour is not that bad but over all it does lend something to the whole whats happeneing to the music instead of the presentation . That is one of Many things I love about the ALLMAN BROTHERS they are all about the music and once again to make a long story longer I did rush to hear this show and though my opinion is nothing in the big picture it left me with mixed feelings....

I agree with you on the music and the tour... I find Layla particularly lame, compared to the original or to the version I have heard the ABB play.

But this IS an EC tour. Derek rightly jumped at the chance to tour with Clapton, because Clapton is a legend and a musician he respects. It is an honor to be asked to play with EC whether or not you like where he is musically. Derek benefits from public exposure far in excess of what he could get by playing the same number of dates with the ABB or with DTB.

Clapton had to be aware of how well Derek plays, and I don't think he had any fears of being overshadowed. Otherwise, he would have found some second rate player. He gave Derek a big break, for which I am sure Derek is grateful.

Most of the folks at the Clapton shows are not there to see Derek, and they are paying to hear EC hits, just like the folks who pay $450 to see the Stones. That's what they get, with little variation in the setlist from night to night. If you count the musicians on stage, it would be a daunting task to perform a big catalog. Remember not too long ago the ABB did almost the same setlists every night.

If you listen to the Italy show, you can still hear that EC is a good guitar player. Do I like Derek better- yes. But for a lot of folks, EC is still the man, and he is the boss on stage. All in all, it's a good show, and I'm sure a lot of us are looking forward to seeing it when it comes stateside.

I agree with y'all for the most part, and sure I'd love to see Derek and Eric go at it more often, but EC has put together a big band, kept Doyle in the fold, and there's gotta be room (and time) for everybody.

I prefer to look at the positives of this deal. Derek gets the exposure he deserves, above and beyond what the ABB and DTB can provide. This in turn, gives the DTB and what the ABB is doing now more exposure than they would ever get on their own.

I'd also imagine Derek might be getting paid a little better with EC than he does with the ABB, which is great for him and his family too. He is also probably seeing alot of different parts of the world that he's never seen before which must be pretty damn cool.

Who knows, maybe EC will wake up one of these days and say " Damnit, I'm sick of playing Cocaine every damn night, why don't we try Little Wing tonight instead? "

I tell you one thing....I am pumped to go see DT with Clapton at MSG. IF it's a once in a life time, it's a magical time. Then a month after we head right to Nokia for Susan and Derek for the itimate show we all love. This is a best of the both worlds time right now. I here you all about the setlist, but who cares. As long as we get to DT doing his thing with Clapton on stage I am going to be pumped.
