I'm just sitting here after a too long week of work, sipping my first weekend beer after a shot of Tullamore Dew (woohoo) and listening to Kevn Kinney's first solo album MacDougal Blues. What a wonderful album. What a great songwriter...

Kevn fronted a band called Drivin' and Cryin' back in the 80's -90's who never really got their due IMO. Their album Fly Me Courageous was their highpoint and sadly, did not sell a whit. But it was a great record meshing hard rock guitar crunch with a bit of alt country sensibiliity here and there. Great stuff.

I also have Kevn's solo album The Flower & The Knife which was produced by...guess who...Warren Haynes!...and has Warren's acoustic guitar all over it. It is one brilliant acoustic album songfest ..!

This guy is one incredible songwriter IMO.

Please let me know if you're into this guy. I think he deserves a lot more acclaim than he's received so far. Let me know I'm not alone here.

Have a great weekend ....

I ordered The Flower & The Knife last weekend at Djangomusic.com.
It's on it's way. Looks promising.
Warren Haynes isn't the only ABB related contributor to this cd.

Look at this fine bunch:

Produced by Warren Haynes

Kevn Kinney - Acoustic Guitar, Vocals; 4-String Banjo on track 5
Allen Woody - Mandolin on track 1; Electric Guitar on track 7
Edwin McCain - Background Vocals on tracks 1 & 13; Vocals on track 12
John Popper - Harmonica on track 2
Warren Haynes - Baritone Guitar on track 3;
Slide Guitar on tracks 3, 6 & 11; Bass Drum on tracks 3 & 10;
National Steel Body Guitar on track 5;
National Resophonic Slide Guitar on track 9;
Electric Rhythm Guitar on track 10;
Guitars & Vocals on track 12;
Acoustic & Electric Guitars & Background Vocals on track 13
Hook Herrera - Harp on track 7
Ken Block - Vocals on track 7
Matt Abts - Drums on track 7
Derek Trucks - Electric Slide Guitar on track 10
Oteil Burbridge - Bass on track 10
Danny Lewis - Trumpet on track 10
Jimmy Herring - Detuned Guitar Noises on track 10

Yep, looks very promising indeed. Judging from the instruments
listed above it's not strictly accoustic.

Have A Great Weekend.

So now i gonna get me a fine brewskie as well.....

Cool...!

I'll be happy to discuss it with you after you receive it and get a chance to listen to it. I will tell you that Scarred But Smarter is my favorite track.

Enjoy Kevn and that brewskie....!

Kevn did me a favor several years ago--Phil and Friends were playing the Atlanta Civic Center and I was standing by the stage door trying to figure out how to get Warren's autograph on a CD I had and Kevn came along headed backstage and said he would be glad to get it for me. He said, "Warren produced my album." He was gone a few minutes and came back with the autograph and a guitar pick! I didn't know who he was then or I probably would have asked for his autograph too, but he never let on. Nice guy.

Very cool story...

I was visiting Athens , Ga with a good friend of mine in September 2003 and we were walking along the downtown area when we ended up next to the fabled 40 Watt Club. And there on the marquee was "Tonight...Kevn Kinney" . My friend said "So..you wanna see him?" "Damn right!" I replied. He knew I was a big Drivin' and Cryin' fan and God bless him for thinking of me.

Well anyway...it was an acoustic show...just Kevn and his guitar. I was mesmerized..he was just so incredible...!

After the show, my friend just kept saying "I'm so glad we did this." It was a great compliment... not only to me, but to Kevn.

These are the kind of musical memories that we all have and treasure.......

Kevn is one my my favorite singer songwriters ever. Very laid back and he's always happy to talk. I'm partly biased because his home is located right around the corner from Atlanta (in Athens) so he does lots of local gigs here in the Atlanta area. The Flower and the Knife is certainly my favorite album of his. Thanks for the breakdown ABBDutch! The Ballad of Hollis Brown is one of my favs - a Dylan cover. His new S.T.A.R Band (Sun Tangled Angel Revival) is a bit more of a rock based album. Edwin McCain plays on that one as well; Gibb Droll, and Dave Schools play on that album too. Kevn is a great guy and I support him whenever I can. Check him out if you've never heard him! He's always around the Atlanta shows when Warren and the boys stop by town.

Saw him last june here in Columbia and I must say that a friend told me about the show and i was shocked becasue I had heard nothing about it at all. It was in this little theatre I mean little there were no more than 75 people there and not a taper in sight, I do not know How my friend even knew about it. it may have been one of the best shows I have ever beeen to, he even played soulshine, I was a drivin'n' cryin' fan before that and A kinney Fan also so it was no surprise what he was playing. After that show I am a even bigger fan. He may be one of the most talented muscians out there, PM your addy i have a show for you there two let me know what other shows you have so i don't send you a repeat

Kevin Kinney is one great guy. My favorite tune he wrote for Allen Woody is "Just outside of Heaven" gives me the chills every time I listen to it.

Kevn is one of the most talented and underrated musicians out there IMHO. He's always at the Xmas Jam and does an incredible job. I have a Drivin' 'N Cryin' live CD and The Flower and the Knife. Both are excellent. He can do it both acoustic and electric. And...WHAT A SONGWRITER ! Saw him and Gibb Droll with a couple of other dudes I can't remember (may be the Sun Tangled Angel Revival of today) at Tipitina's three years ago. Not many folks there on a week night but THEY ROCKED the damn house ! If you ain't got any Kevn Kinney then get some immeiately !

Great thread, Andrew! Pick up Sun Tangled Angel Revival as well, great Kevn Kinney album. I believe this album was released in 2004 so it should be easy to grab.

For those not familiar with Drivin' N' Cryin', an excellent place to start would be Essential Live.

Kevn Kinney is sensational!

Hey Libby....

Thanks but I'm just thrilled to finds some kindred spirits here. STAR has been on my look for list for awhile. I may need to break down and order it.

The tune "Fly Me Courageous" has been one of the tunes I sang in whatever rock band I've been in. I hope if Kevn ever heard me do it, he'd be pleased with my rendition. I sing it Kevn style.

I'm a big fan of Kevn as well His son plays a mean harmonica too for a youngster.

He plays around Athens some and I always try to catch the shows.
Drivin' N Cryin' are playing for free at AthFest this year....Saturday, June 24th, 4:00pm I think at the outdoor stage! Many other great bands too! If you're in the vicinity it's a great fest to attend.
