It would appear that you didn't complete the download. Where's Rosshmusic? He can explain this stuff better.

dyn182:

when you download the bitorrent file from dimeadozen you are not getting the actual songs just an index of the songs (this is called the torrent file)... those "empty" files are created as a place holder for what the files will be when the songs are actually downloaded...

you need to leave open the bittorrent program long enough for it to actually DL the data that belongs in those files... what bittorrent program are you using? it should tell you how many people are currently connected to the torrent (think of it as a conference call - the more people on it, the more information is out there to be shared)... it should also tell you how long until the DL completes... for me, a torrent can take anywhere between 1 hour and 2 days depending on how many people are "on" the torrent and how big the total show is... which torrent on dime were you trying to DL...?

I'm starting to ramble, so let me know if this helps and feel free to answer any of the questions I asked so I can get a better picture of whart your situation is like...

Peace
Ross

I recommend using either bittornado, or utorrent as I feel they are the mosst advanced torrenting programs out there... but Bram's is the reference (the original) so it should work fine too...

when you clicked on the torrent on the dimeadozen website it should have automatically opened with that bittorrent program.... most automatically commence DL'ing, but some you have to choose to start the DL'ing of the files by selecting start (or something like that)...

Which torrent is it (the web page from dimeadozen)...? can you supply a link... that way I know what you should see and approx how long it will take.

looks like you were on for about 1 hour according to user records at dime... thats most likely not nearly long enough to DL a whole show...

and it looks like your firewalled (which either significantly slow things down by not letting people connect to you, or stop you completely)...

that is of course if this is you...

Firewalled ports
Port Reason Explanation
6881 connection timed out stealth firewalled or overloaded bandwidth

and it shows you didn't DL any information whatsoever... which is why your seeing those empty files... you only DL'd the information file...

EDIT: are you at home or at work...?

do you have a router with a firewall, if so you need to forward some ports on it...

if not, you may be using MS Windows firewall... do you think this is the case...

also, once that is sorted out (or even before) you can try clicking on the torrent link on the dimeadozen web page... can you provide a link to the torrent you are trying to DL?

By your place at school, I assume you mean college.

I work at a university, and I happily torrented for about two years until we got warning letters that we would be filtered (taken off the network) if our uploads went above certain levels. So, I made sure my uploads specs were set well below their levels. That worked for a while. Then, just about two weeks ago, the friggin' IT police show up in my office. The guys says, "I'm here to work on your computer." I ask him what he meant. And he said, you're running BitTorrents, and I'm here to take the program off. I told him I'd do it myself (couldn't have him finding my porno collection ), and I did. My only point here is that sysadmins for large systems are hip to BT, and can and will take steps to prevent it.

Good luck to you.

Can't have that. Here's hoping you find a way to avoid them altogether.

Man, professor, I know the exam was yesterday, but Phil released another free soundboard!
