I like seeing the Allmans do a bunch of covers same as the next guy, but when the covers are coming left and right, how about so me new material? The last record was 3 years ago. I know Warren's got the Mule to do and all, but instead of worrying about what it would be cool to redo, how about some new songs? Or even some obscure stuff from ALL their albums, not just the popular stuff?

I know I'm gonna get ripped on this, but is new material so much to ask for?

Oh well. rock on ...

I'm resisting the urge to rip....

New material would be great, but you've got to appreaciate the blues roots, too!

You are clueless. Welcome to the site. Pick up "Hittin' The Note" a recent ABB disc while you're here!

I will agree that sometimes it does seem like new covers are coming out at an alarming rate, it's not all that bad. For the most part, the major covers are only slated for Beacon shows. You may get one of the covers here and there during the summer, but its mostly a Beacon thing. Also, Gregg has said that either they were recording a new album or he and Warren have been writing for the new album, I also thought I heard someone say that Gregg said they might do some new songs this past Beacon. I guess the songs weren't fine tuned enough, which is alright. I do also agree with maybe bringing back some lesser known Allmans songs instead of more covers. But then again...it's only 1 or 2 songs a show anyway. Did you know that Statesboro, Done Somebody Wrong, You Don't Love me and Stormy Monday are all covers as well?

No whining here, that's for sure -- yes they "cover" other people's songs but that's about where it ends -- there is nothing remotely similar in how the ABB plays covers, to what they're "covering" -- look at Trouble No More, Can't Lose What You Never Had etc. -- when they play stuff like The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Layla, Into The Mystic etc, those songs morph into ABB numbers for me -- the music they play is so their own -- I can understand where you're coming from, it's just that the Allmans are such a unique band.

This is a discussion board right?I don't think we all have to be in ABB worship mode 24/7. He made his statement rather moderately with only a touch of whine If your position is that you don't care if they ever play another new original tune again, then say that. But there should be no problem with raising the issue for discussion......might not be much to gain from it either, but how much do we really gain from most topics. It's just fun to speak about your favorite band and related ideas.

I for one love to hear the covers and have the special guests join them at the Beacon. It's great to hear my favorite musicians doing classic tunes, and jamming with other legends and rising talents. It's all part of the what this band is about. But I'd love to hear a few new tunes in, as well, or some old ones dusted off. Why Not? But as is, I still wouldn't rather see anyone else!

If you go back through our pages here bro everything is discussed here from Beatles, EC, LS and throwing up at The Beacon! For a first post it would have been cooler to introduce himself than post the quirk. Speaking of covers, didn't Gregg write "Whipping Post" on an ironing board COVER?

No they are not a cover band, very far from it - but you are obviously "cover poster".

Now why not tell us who you really are since you just decided to register today or post under an alias to stir things up a bit. This is a great community here, you are either a part of it or you're not. It's not about ABB worship, it's about doing what's right.

It seems they can't win. Part of the crowd wants new stuff but there still seems to be an overwhelming majority of folks yelling whipping post and Melissa all night long no matter how great they are playing. As long as they play at the level they are right now they could cover " It's a small world after all " and I'd dig it.

You're cool bro. This is a special place and unfortunately, some people don't get it. But fortunately for US, they don't stick around!

Okay, just for the sake of stirring things up let me ask a question.....(and I'm not even saying this pertains to ABB) When does a band who continues to do only their old songs start becoming a 'cover' band of themselves? I haven't really heard the recent incarnation of the Grateful Dead, but for the sake of this post, let's assume they only play songs from when Jerry Garcia was alive without any new original material.....wouldn't they then become a cover band of themselves at some point?

I guess what it comes down to is....for me....when any band stops coming up with new original material but only plays their, or other's songs....aren't they technically a cover band?

And again, for any who missed it, I haven't seen an ABB live show in a very long time so I can't even address the question in respect to their set lists...okay!

BINGO!

First post was a complaint.

Welcome aboard.

How about special guests?

They probably have too many of them too.

Enjoy what you get.

(Including the drum trio.)
