My son asked me a question yesterday which I wasn't really sure, or knew of the answers. How do soundboards from shows and FM broadcasts get put into the trading pool circulation? How, and why are they made available?

As for the Grateful Dead, they would allow some of the tapers to patch into the soundboard directly and let them trade these tapes freely. (Thank you Jerry) In November of 2005 the Dead tried to shut down the downloading of soundboard shows.
The FM broadcasts most likely come from people sitting at home recording radio shows onto their cassette decks. Thanks to modern technology these cassettes can be transfered to cds and now you can record directly from radio to cd burners.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that back in the day a ton of Led Zeppelin SBDs were stolen from Jimmy Page's house. I don't know if this is how it happens with other bands, but it's certainly one way of getting those recordings out there.

Also "back in the day" certain soundboard technicians were undoubtedly bribed by bootleggers to get recordings, and thus a lot of SBD recordings around today are "liberated" bootlegs.

A friend of a friend runs the board for some ........................shows.

I have a few that I can't list or trade, because they would know exactly where they came from.

I knew someone who knew the sound guy at a club on the east coast.
The sound guy would run a hidden patch and record all the groups
that played at the club. Distribution was limited to protect the source
(the goose with the golden egg). At least as long as the sound guy had the
job. Of course each person who was told not to distribute let a few
copies out.

Beg barrow and steal, music wants to be free.....

Yeah. My buddy said I could give out a couple, but to make sure they were never listed or put up for open trade.

Rich, I'll see you this weekend.

Many of the FM shows come from the reel-to-reel or CD copies of shows distributed like King Biscuit. Other FMs come from radio stations that recorded the feed prior to re-broadcasting. Some others, from those just listening in at home with a cassette recorder running.
