Christopher Reeve's widow dies of lung cancer at age 44; Dana Reeve fought for better treatments for paralysis

NEW YORK Dana Reeve, who fought for better treatments and possible cures for paralysis through the Christopher Reeve Foundation, named for her late actor-husband, has died. She was 44.

Reeve died Monday of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center, said Sean Dougherty, a spokesman for the foundation.

"We are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us," Kathy Lewis, president and CEO of the foundation, said in a statement.

Reeve won worldwide admiration for her support of her husband, the one-time Hollywood "Superman" turned activist for spinal cord research after a horse-riding accident in 1996.

She served as chairwoman of the Christopher Reeve Foundation and founded the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center.

Christopher Reeve died in 2004. In August, Dana Reeve announced she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. She said she had never smoked.

She said in November that said she was able to keep her spirits up because she "had a great model. ... I was married to a man who never gave up."

Reeve lived in Westchester County, near New York, with the couple's teenage son, Will. She has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway and regional stages and on the TV shows "Law & Order," "Oz," and "All My Children."

"Dana will always be remembered for her passion, strength and ceaseless courage that became her hallmark," Lewis said. "Along with her husband, Christopher, she faced adversity with grace and determination, bringing hope to millions around the world."

She is survived by her father, Dr. Charles Morosini; sisters Deborah Morosini and Adrienne Morosini Heilman; two stepchildren, Matthew and Alexandra; and her son.

Truly a sad thing -- people don't deserve as cruel a turn of fate as she and her husband endured -- and Kirby Puckett too for that matter. How mortal we humans are.

I am truly sorry and I mourn for her loss and that of her family.

Dana and Chris were truly incredible people. So generous and kind and caring for others. The world was certainly a better place with them and because of them.

As a lifelong NY Rangers fan, over the years I often saw Chris and Dana and family feeling the same joy that I felt from seeing the Rangers. The Garden will never be the same without them.

Saw her back in January at MSG on Mark Messier night and she sang "Now and Forever". Thought she looked and sounded great. What a shock. Very, very sad.

Unfortunately, it's a long way down the road, if ever. Despite the characteriztions (Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, etc.), Cancer is ultimately very personal - each person's cancer is their own depending on their genetic makeup. This is one of the reasons why a treatment will work well for one and not at all for another or why one person will survive for years with the disease while another will be taken quickly.

I've always felt that Life is too short to hate anything but I effin' Hate Cancer!

Bobo, I hear you. Its so frustrating that with all the great thigs we can come up with in the world, we are still so far away for a cure. My mother has lung cancer so i am very knowledgable about it. She has a greta attitude and I cant tell you how much that makes a difference. Still a long long way to go though. Cant seem to get away from this type of talk today.

I thought it was interesting this morning when I heard she had died, and I'll tell you why. I've thought a lot about Christopher Reeve's life, and I think I might view it differently than some. I believe the defining moment in his life was when he broke his neck. That's when his real work started. The fame and position he won by acting was only to give him the platform to do the work he did for spinal cord injury research. I don't think his was a tragic life at all, but exactly the life he came here to live. When I heard this morning his wife had died, too, I smiled and thought, "She just came here to help him. Her work is done now, too."

Just thinking about the stories of Dana & Christopher make me realize how fortunate I truly am.
Here's the link to a very touching video tribute to Dana Reeve:
