does anyone know why this man left/ was kicked out of the abb? If he is who i think he is in Blue Floyd currently, he has one of the best voices i have ever heard. Is he in a band currently/ Is he touring?

It was my understanding that he just signed a short contract at the beginning of his ABB stint. They just didn't renew the contract for whatever reason. I've seen Johnny in Lots of different musical situations since his ABB deparrure. He is a very talented singer, player, and songwriter. But it seems to me that he LOVES to party it up and he can sometimes aimlessly jam it up a bit much for my tastes. I saw his project, The Grease Factor, at a late-night gig at Jazzfest last year and they were pretty groovin. I know I've been on his website at some point in the past as well. A google search might put you there.

Check out Barry Smiths post on the Seven Turns and Good Clean Fun videos. You'll get a special treat when Johnny used to be in the band.

Hey, I was there too!

I talked to Johhny that night at the Howlin Wolf, and asked him if he was gonna go jam with Gov't Mule, who were also playing that night (he didn't). I got the impression things weren't too tight between Johnny and the ABB family these days.

Didn't he just play with them last year? According to Midnight Riders, the band was not satisfied witht he way he played the older Chuck Leavell parts. After He left, Gregg wanted to get another paino player but the rest of the band vetoes it.

I seen Johnny play in a night club here in my small hometown. McMinnville,Tennessee population about 33,000. He was playing piano in Lonnie Macks pick up band. Lonnie lives about 20 miles from me and he assembled a pretty darn good band one New Years Eve around '98 or'99. Johnny was pretty well lit that night and he pounded the hell out of his keyboard.

I remember Chuck at the Big House, but not Johnny.

Johnny does what he wants to when he wants to , therefore I feel that he may be too muck for the ABB's to handle these days.

I think Johnny is definitely a talented piano player. However, I never thought he was a good fit with ABB, their material, and style. Granted, some may judge any ABB keyboard player by what we're used to hearing, i.e. Chuck Leavel. Chuck is tremendous and has such a fluid & melodic style. Johhny is a whole lot more esoteric in his approach. I like to think of Johnny's sytle in the vein of a Miles Davis. I remember seeing him in one show with the Bros., and thought that his solo in Jessica wasn't real pleasant on the ears - did it fit...maybe so - did it have the climb ups that the keyboard definition of the song is known for...no. It's his interpretation and he's entitled to it.

If you listen to the keys - filler and solos of both Tim Heding and Neil Larsen who have played with Gregg, I feel they were much closer fits. I'd enjoy seeing either do a tour with ABB. Always thought the additional keyboard gave an added dimension.

"he pounded the hell out of his keyboard."

That's true enough, he was at the beacon and I talked to him in the lobby--at the time he was ranting about not being asked to play that night (not sure which night it was), but he was on stage for One Way Out at the big house benefit. I was in the balcony then so I could watch him attack the piano, which he did. Warren tells a real funny story about him on that documentary about Allen Woody.

he covered maydell on his latest live cd. I think he is very underrated and wouldn't mind seeing him in the abb again. Although he is no chuck, he is awesome. Hey, hes better than mike lawler, right?

I love Johnny Neel. Blue Floyd was awesome in it's first incarnation.Abts, Woody, Neel and Marc Ford plus B.O. Jr. That was intense.

Johnny is also on a bunch of tunes on the Mule's Life before Insanity and of course seven turns.

I get the impression about him though that if he's invited to jam on one tune he won't leave the stage and will try and take over the band so to speak.

I think the best i saw him was with Matt Abts in a very low key side project they did called x-2. ( experimental duo) Just keys and drums. Totally crazy.

Last I heard of Johnny, he was producing an album for a cool band from Conneticuit called Sol Dog.
