The date is listed on this person's site, & he apologizes for confusing the 6/26 date with the 6/27/71 recording. lol

You know what though.... it would be SOME story, if that tape did end up in Japan, & was found by some collector there.

Gary,

That's a good question, with no obvious answer.

I am aware of some HARD Core EC fans in Japan that are willing to go through the depths of hell to find source tapes. Fanatics, or Ma-Ni-Akku as the Japanese would say.

That Dominos' tape has been circulating for quite some time, as well as the tape from the "second" source. I actually received my first copy of this show from old coot back in the day. I wasn't even aware of the other source until a few years later-I mean, who would've thought there were TWO tapers in audience that day for the show? It's pretty rare to have two different sources for ANY show from back then....to top it off, pictures from that show exist.

They probably had no idea how much value those tapes had to ABB Fans.

You know, I knew when I saw it that it was just way to easy, to just see it like that. And the mix-up on the dates is the totally obvious answer. But I kept reading the song list over and over and realized either it was the Holy Grail or that some mischievous merry prankster of a trader is having a little fun with us. Now I'm not whining or griping and surely no one has done anything wrong here. But no one mixed up that song list with some other. The songs and the order they're in is identical to the set list in HTW's Live Show Database. I wouls be curious to know how many people have seen that post and went nuts trying to find somebody to translate.

Talking about this site, it is most reliable source about Duane in Japan I think.
About link of Marion's first post, webmmaster of the site apologozes for mixed up the show of both dates 6/26 & 6/27, just as finsky told. It seems, he had got the source of 6/26 show but it was identical to 6/27 show and he thought there was no event on 6/26 though there are set list of 6/26 show on here. He changed his thoughts by Mr. Mitsuhashi's post on his BBS that there was really been played at 6/26 and described a link of article about this day.
The link of Mr. Miitsuhashi mentioned is:

http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/htn/fillmore/closed.html

but currently this link doesn't work.
If someone know where we can read this article, please let us know the new link.

Also talk about 12/01/'70 tampa show of D&D, first bootleg is vinyl LP from Starlight Records, Tampa Bay Blues. not from Mid Valley. Next one is Red Light, Live At Tampa Featuring Duane Allman. This one is first bootleg CD which conatins all the tunes played at this show and this seems not a Japanes bootlegger.

Mid Valley used same taper's source and done remastering, released Soul Mates & Soul Mates 2. These are not from 2nd generation tape as we know.
Most recent Mid Valley release of this show, Soul Mates Twin Flames, are using 2nd generation tape and interpolating some part of lacks by Soul Mates 2.

I wish I could find an image of that LP somewhere...it has a cartoon image of EC, & has been around for a very long time. I *think* the bootleg cd was sourced straight from the vinyl, & was an Italian bootleg.

The Mid Valley bunch are some of those EC fanatics I was referring to. I don't know how they track down those tapes.

finsky,
I can only imagine following vinyl bootleg LP, Stromy Monday, and is from 11/20/'70 Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, bootlegger is TMOQ(Trade Mark Of Quality).

I have an original of this LP, sound is superb for that old days.

Masahiko,

That's the vinyl! One of those scarce, Dominos' artifacts.

If you see any 69-71 ABB shows that are listed that look unfamiliar, chances are very good that it's bogus. I think it's pretty safe to assume that the 6/26 show just doesn't exist. Just from looking at the setlist, it looks like a 4-5cdr show.

There are only a select, select few people that have vintage ABB reels that aren't in circulation, & who knows if the reels even aged well. And there are also the select, select few that recorded gigs from the audience, like the 9/16/71 show. It'd be cool for HTN to do a story on the discovery of that show (hint, hint). Wasn't the story....that a person that was there remembered it being recorded, & hunted it down almost 25-30 years later? And what they found was a nearly complete, whole show, which are rare, rare, rare. An added bonus was that pictures from that show exist, with Duane wearing a "Warehouse" jersey.

It was also the first time many of us heard Blue Sky being played live by Duane/Berry.

What a story!

Nick,

HTN did a story of the 9/16/71 tape discovery. It happened just as you said.
Someone remembered hearing a Blue Sky at the Warehouse and put an ad in the newspaper. The rest is in the story - or is history...whichever....LOL

Best ---

I saw a picture of Dickey wearing a wearhouse jersey, he had short hair and Duane was playing an SG, must have been a late 71 photo.

BTW does anyone know if Warehouse and Fillmore East/West jerseys can be found anywhere for a decent price? I saw Pigpen with a FE shirt and so I'm interested in these jerseys now.

Gary,

Was this article done duirng the black & white days of HTN? Man, must've completely missed that issue.

I believe the wolfgang vault sells a replica of the Fillmore East jerseys. I'm willing to bet that a vintage would cost you an arm & a leg.

Warehouse memorabilia is harder to find than the Fillmore.

I skimmed through this book again during the weekend-with the snow & all, there was only so much one can do.

Maybe I had completely forgotten about it, but the book's account shows a sad closing of the heralded Fillmore East(as well as West). Graham's employees were shocked that he was closing it down, b/c in terms of $$, it was doing well. These guys/gals would go to work in the afternoon, listen to bands rehearse, & leave in the early mornings after the show. What a life. Many of them tried to persuade him to keep it going, & it seems like he was considering it at one point, but he "never got around to it". The commute from the West Coast was really getting to Graham, as well as the music business itself. Burned out.

Acording to the book, they were discussing how the music scene was getting somewhat "corporate", and this was well over 30 years ago! Bands/managers wanted gigs at the MSG when they were in NY. More money by doing fewer gigs, all at the expense of the quality (MSG's acoustics still stink to this day). People like Jimi & Janis passed away. Newer acts/bands were getting fewer-the book gives examples such as the Allmans & Santana, & how they got gigs even though they were practically unheard of by the mainstream (Dickey mentioned their big break at the HOF induction). Seems like the FE "scene", if you will, deteriorated in a span of about two years due to some of these changes.

Peter Frampton was just right around the corner.

I guess a good example of this is the ABB gigs from 6/26 & 6/27. Going by Rowland's account of 6/26 & the tape of 6/27, you wonder how these shows were performed back to back. One gig was the supposed greatest show this band did-the next gig leaves Duane wondering if the crowd is "too high".

What was sad when reading these accounts is the regret: I don't remember the specific name, but one of Bill Graham's associates said that the closing was literally the end of the concert scene in NYC, & how it still hasn't recovered from it. How they had a foot in one of the biggest markets in the world, & it was gone. There is irony here, b/c many people today crave for the Fillmore East, & what it represented-but the changes in rock & roll literally drove it away.

According to Butch Trucks, "That night--maybe the greatest night of our life--wasn't recorded, and in an odd way, I'm glad."

This is from Night Beat, by Mikal Gilmore (Doubleday; 1998; ISBN: 0-385-48435-6), which DobroDen mentioned in another thread.

It's possible Butch was mistaken, but he emphasized "wasn't" in the original piece, so who knows? Theoretically someone could have done something clandestine, but I would think it'd be awfully hard to do anything like that.

Grrrrr!
