I posted this last year and just wanted to share it again. This was one of those times that can never be erased.

R.I.P. John

Twenty five years ago today I was watching The New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football when my life was changed forever. I was fourteen years old.
It was during this game that Howard Cosell announced around 11:40 pm that John Lennon had been shot. I sat there speechless not knowing what to do. Then around 11:50 pm Howard Cosell with a quiver in his voice said that John Lennon was dead!! At that moment my whole world came crashing down. A piece of me ripped out. I woke my mother up crying hysterically. When I told what had happened we both sat there hugging each other and cried. I had to call my two best friends even though it was after 1:00 am. I woke both their parents up but they were very forgiving considering the circumstance. Both Jeff and Fred took it hard but not like I did. Those rose colored glasses I have been looking through have been shattered! At that moment I saw a different world. I skipped school for a week trying to drown my pain with drink and drugs.
It was the summer of ‘75 when I discovered the Beatles. The first Beatle song I ever heard was Come Together. Oh what an incredible song! The guitar, the bass and that drum beat. It just blew my mind away. I just had to find out who they were. When my mother told me it was the Beatles, I had to get more. My mother didn’t have any LPs but she did have 45s of the Beatles. Come Together and Something on 1. Let It Be, Hey Jude, Paperback Writer, I’m a loser this was actually an EP with 4 songs. Ticket to Ride, Help, Nowhere Man. Just a taste of what was to come. Christmas my mother bought me Abbey Road and The Beatles 62 to 66 to my delight. I played them over and over. The joy and memories these songs would give me. Even today when I here Please Please Me I think of Christmas of ’75.
I had to find out all I could about them. I checked out every book I could find on the Beatles at our local library. One particular book called Beatles Forever by Hunter Thompson just really caught my attention. It was full of stories, pictures, and memorabilia. Through this book I was able to relive Beatle-mania. I had to replace the book eventually. I kept cutting the pictures out of the book and was finally caught!
Something about John just attracts you to him. I felt his pain when I read about his childhood. His lyrics touched me different then the others did like “I’m a loser”, “Help”, “Nowhere man”, “In my life”, “Mother”, “Imagine”. He poured his heart and soul into his music making them very personal. His songs are a photo album of his life. I never had a chance to meet or see him. I feel like I knew him, as many fans do. They connected me to him. His music has away of doing that to me. He let me into his life through his songs. His music has comforted me, made me happy, and made me cry. I have memories good and bad that I will treasure until I die. I have made wonderful friends over the years through our love of the Beatles. Something that can never be taken away from me.
You wanted peace and you died violently. Even after twenty five years I still feel the pain and emptiness that was left in me that night. I cry for you tonight John. Only if you can imagine how much I miss you.

Thanks for the reminder.

Every time I go to the Beacon I walk down a couple of blocks to 72nd, hang a left and pass the Dakota (and all the ghouls taking photos of the spot where John was shot) and go to Strawberry Fields to pay my respects.

Wow Rob.. I could not have said it better myself man.

I was 13 years old. I had been a Beatle fan since I was 8. As woth Rob, I heard a Beatle tune on the radio, and it caught my ear ( I believe it was " All You Need Is Love") I asked my Mom who is was. I was inrtriqued to say the least. I asked her to buy me a Beatle album for Christmas that year and to my delight, I received the 1962-1966 album. I was estatic!!!! I still remember bouncing around my living room with sheer childhood joy while listening to songs like 'Hard Days Night". "All My Loving" , and "She Loved You". Man I was hooked!! Then of course I HAD to have the 1967-1970 album. Well that just blew the roof off

At about that point I started to pay a little more attention to the lyrics. I am reading some of them, and noticed they are a little different then the rest. A little more meaningfull, and little more deep. Someone who seemed like he was speaking to ME.
Nowhere Man, Im a Loser, Help!, amoung others. "Someone finally understands me" I thought.

Since my Mom wasnt really much of a Beatle fan ( She was an Elvis gal ) she really couldnt answer the 1,000 questions I had about the band. She itoo borrowed thr Hunter Davies book from the library. I must have read that book at least 3 times before returning it. With a few late fees ofcourse It was then that I realized that the songs I was most attracted to were written John, and not the Lennon/ Macca that I thought..

Fast forward to December 8, 1980.

I am watching the NE Patriots against the Miami Dolphins. I didnt feel well, so I decided to go to bed.
The next AM I wake up a little late and rush to get ready for school. I pass the TV in the living room. It is off. I think thats a little odd, as it was always on in the morning either with my sister and bro watching cartoons, or my Mom watching the news.
I go in the kitchen to grab something quick for breakfast and my Mom is giving me one of those "are you ok?" looks.
What she doesnt know is that I didnt watch the whole game the night before, and I have no idea about John at this point.
She asks me 3 times if I am ok, and I think she has just lost her mind..LOL
As usual, I walk across the street to my friend Joe's house . whose parents are HUGE Beatle fans ( they had been filing me in on Beatle history as well ). His mom answers the door, and there are tears in her eyes. I try to ignore it, and just ask if my friend is ready. She invites me in., and I see his Dad also had been crying. I am thinking I walked in the middle of some family crisis,so i tell then I will wait outside.
My buddy comes out and he also had been crying.
I saw nothing and we start walking to school. After a minute or so, he says " so are you ok?"
At this point I yell "what the HELL is everyones problem today??"
Then he realizes that I dont know. Then says the 4words I will never forget.
John Lennon Is Dead.
He has a tear i his eye, but I still dont believe him.
I run to the convienience store all I see is those 4 words on every newspaper.
I just stared in disbelief. I must have been there for awhile, because my friend had to drag me out of the store.
We continued on to school, but that was the last place I want to be.
With tears in my eyes, my bud fills me in about what happened. I am in total disbelief. And quickly filling with anger.
John Lennon cant be DEAD. Thats impossible. He CANT be dead. Could he?
I get to school and I start to punch my locker.. repeatedly.
Then, one of my "friends", or so I thought, calls my attention. I look, and he is imitating getting shot.
That is one of the only two fights I was ever involved in at school.
I never spoke to him again. Ever.

After 25 years, it still hurts. I know it may sound weird, or strange.
But I look at Rob's post above ( and our numerous PMs on he subject) and a few conversations with Susie, and I see I am not alone on this.

If I can make one request to everyone today.
In the spirit of John's love and peace stance, lets all NOT attack his killer ( I rarely mention his name) or even Yoko. Those of you that know me know that will be VERY hard for me to do. But I will.

I still miss you John..

We all shine on........

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

This song is a little bittersweet to me.

He didnt get a chance to "Start Over"
But I like to think these are the words of a happy man who had finally found the peace he had been searching for..

(Just Like) Starting Over

Our life together is so precious together,
We have grown - we have grown,
Although our love is still special,
Let's take our chance and fly away somewhere alone,

It's been so long since we took the time,
No-one's to blame,
I know time flies so quickly,
But when I see you darling,
It's like we both are falling in love again,
It'll be just like starting over - starting over,

Everyday we used to make it love,
Why can't we be making love nice and easy,
It's time to spread our wing's and fly,
Don't let another day go by my love,
It'll be just like starting over - starting over,

Why don't we take off alone,
Take a trip far, far away,
We'll be together on our own again,
Like we used to in the early days,
Well, well, well darling,

It's been so long since we took the time,
No-one's to blame,
I know time flies so quickly,
But when I see you darling,
It's like we both are falling in love again,
It'll be just like starting over - starting over,

Everyday we used to make it love,
Why can't we be making love nice and easy,
It's time to spread our wing's and fly,
Don't let another day go by my love,
It'll be just like starting over - starting over,

Our life together is so precious together,
We have grown - we have grown,
Although our love is still special,
Let's take our chance and fly away somewhere alone

Thank you Wharfy and Cupofjo. Do you remember when Yoko ordered the whole WORLD to have a moment of silence simultaneously and all of the radio stations complied. See ya all at Strawbwrry Fields someday. "Love is real, Real is Love"

From that wonderful day in 1963 when, as an 11 year old, I first heard Please Please Me right up until the present day, the poignant lyrics of John Lennon, at times tinged with sorrow and at others filled with humour, have lead me through this Magical Mystery Tour we call life . . . this day and always John I will continue to imagine . . . R.I.P. brother.

25 Years
Hard to believe still
Part of a Generation that was moulded by the Fab Four
Everything they did was news
Music, Politics, Clothing
Our lives evolved as they did
New Albums were anticipated and quickly bought
Sweet Pop songs to Introspective musings
The Summer of Love chnaged our lives
And in the center of it all was
John Lennon
We still miss you

I love John's music so much. My son has Lennon for a middle name but I think it's ironic he is remembered for peace and love but he left his wife and son behind for another woman. I've heard Julian talk about this on T.V. several times. Here is part of a story in todays news,
quote:
Yet the man who brought a generation such pleasure with seminal tracks like "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Give Peace and Chance" and "Imagine," also caused pain to those who loved him.

Both his first wife Cynthia and their son Julian recently voiced their sense of rejection when Lennon left them for Ono.

Cynthia told Reuters earlier this year that she and Julian were "airbrushed" from the Beatles' story and that Ono made it clear she did not want her in New York after Lennon's death.

In a statement on his Web site, Julian added: "I have always had very mixed feelings about Dad. He was the father I loved who let me down in so many ways ... it's painful to think that his early death robbed me of the chance for us to know each other better."

Ono's spokesman Elliot Mintz said he had received more than 500 requests for interviews with Lennon's Japanese-born wife.

"It's just too painful for her to discuss," he said.

Of all people, my mother woke me up that night to tell me. She was crying.

Tonight, after work, I'm going up to Strawberry Fields and try not to look across the street at the Dakota, which may be difficult because the subway entrance is right there. I want to go up to be with other people to celebrate John's life, to shed a few tears with some kindred spirits, and to thank him, as I have again and again, for giving me the soundtrack to my life.

IMAGINE.

There are only a handful of people that you can put in John's class as a musician and as a person. Like many I remember that night when I heard the awful news. It seemed John had just found some much needed inner peace and was in a very good place in his life. He is missed very very much...RIP Brother John.

You can shine your shoes and wear a suit
You can comb your hair and look quite cute
You can hide your face behind a smile
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside

You can wear a mask and paint your face
You can call yourself the human race
You can wear a collar and a tie
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside

Well now you know that your
Cat has nine lives
Nine lives to itself
But you only got one
And a dog's life ain't fun
Mamma take a look outside

You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside...

Nowhere Man (Lennon/McCartney)

He's a real nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

Doesn't kave a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?
Doesn't kave a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lend you a hand.

He's a real Nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

I was 18 at the time and I don't remember a whole lot about anything from back then. The only two things I seem to remember were hearing the news on WPLJ-FM (this is when they played good rock) and it seems to me it was very very cold that night. I remember just being in a state of total disbelief, I was never the biggest Beatle fan but I respected their accomplishments and to see one human being do such a horrible thing to another was very disturbing.

25 years later I feel John's death stands as a testament to the great need for love and peace in this world, ideals that he so dearly embraced. If this happened to some 'regular Joe' so to speak, we may have heard about it for a few days and then moved on. The fact that it happened to John keeps it in my memory forever.

All Those Years Ago
~ George Harrison, 1981

I'm shouting all about love
While they treated you like a dog
When you were the one who made it all so clear
All those years ago

I'm talking all about how to give
They don't act with much honesty
But you point the way to the truth when you say
All you need is love

Living with good and bad
I always looked up to you
Now we're left cold and sad
By someone the devil's best friend
Someone who offended all

We're living in a bad dream
They've forgotten all about mankind
And you were the one they backed up to the wall
All those years ago
You were the one who imagined it all
All those years ago

Deep in the darkest night
I send a prayer to you
Now in the world of light
Where the spirit free of the lies
And all else we despised

They've forgotten all about God
He's the only reason we exist
You were the one that they said was so weird
All those years ago
You said it all though not many had ears
All those years ago
You had control of our smiles and our tears
All those years ago

Thanks for posting that nikinou -- I thought it was a great things for Paul George and Ringo to do, to get together and pay tribute to John with a song -- odd, as I recall it George already had that song done under a different title, then when the tragedy happened he rewrote it for John & retitled it.
Working Class Hero -- he coined the term that became a common saying and the song speaks to everybody -- John Lennon was not impressed with his stature as a "rock star," that's for sure.

"In the middle of a bath...in the middle of a shave...in the middle of a cloud, in the middle of a cloud I call your name
Oh Yoko
Oh Yoko
My love will turn you on."

What a good hearted person he was.
Rest in peace forever, John Lennon.

Working Class Hero

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so **** ing crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still **** ing peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
