hey everyone, i just had a few questions about duane and dickeys techniques on a couple of riffs..

duane - liz reed (fillmore) at about 11:30 - what is he doing here with the pic taps? i know how to do this but it seems as though im missing something because hes going at about 1000 times faster... is he just playing the 9th and 14th frets on the G string and tapping the 14th with the pic? I have to be doing something wrong

dickey - whippin post (fillmore) about 8:30 - does anyone know exactly how hes playing this? something about it sounds really cool, i think it has to do with how hes changing strings... is there a tab out for it?

thanks everyone

I was hoping someone else would answer this, so I could see if I was doing it right.

I slowed it down so I could hear it a little better. as far as I can tell that's what he's doing. I can hear the note at the 14th fret (G string) clearly. But, I can only hear the one on the 9th fret occasionally.

I'm not the best guitar player, but; I fret the entire Major 7 chord on the 7th fret and tap the 14th fret (G string) with the edge of my pick.( no pull off.) But I could be wrong.

thanks...but is there even a slight chance you could be so specific as to tell me what you don't have the time for?

If anyone else has any other helpful replies to my question please feel free to add them

Ok fella, i wasn't meaning to sound eggy with that - i meant that i wished i had the time to help you.

well, i've listened to the liz reed qu. and i reckon both of you are there. You can play it 3 times faster than uncle duane if you want.

g string fret the note e (9frt) 1st finger and hammer-on/off the note g (12 frt). with the sharp edge of the pic (the flat side is facing head-stock/bridge) - just scrub the A(14FRT) as fast as you like!! :-D . But he may have done it on the B or E string, but a lot harder to do on the top e.

Dave

dave, im sorry its hard to tell on a message board. anyway, thats really interesting--the whole scrub thing--i was trying to tap up/down rather than scrubbing back and forth.. and you can go alot faster that way

"and i reckon both of you are there. You can play it 3 times faster than uncle duane if you want." -- I'm just curious if im missing anything here I dont quite understand what you mean.

also, do you know the way dickey is doing that thing? i know its with D D# and E back and forth between the G and B strings, but i just cant figure out how.

thanks again,
steve

I could be wrong, but i play that a bit differently- you can do it on one string, and i wonder if it really needs to be picked.

E --------------------------------------------------------------------
B--------------4--5(H.O./p.o.)4>3--5(H.O. p.o)--4(start)
G ------------------------------------------------------------------

H.O. hammer-on
P.O. Pull off
> slide

i seemed to only pick the first note.

the other way, using the G string

E--------------------------------------------------
B----------4(H.O)--5(p.o.)4------5---------
G----------------------------------7--------------

i feel this sounds more staccato(sp?) as more of it needs to be picked - and its easier your first and 4 fingers stay on their notes. But this s cool if you slide it up the neck, nice tensiony type thing.

Alternatively, give it a derek trucks feel and play the E as an open string and finger pick it!!

Hope this helps, i just woke up and its probably all wrong - but method one sounds ok to me right now
