#2, Aren't "heel" play-by-play guys quite commonplace? Lawler plays the role himself, on occasion, and I used to LOVE Jesse the Body giving McMahon crap all the time when they announced together in the 80's.

I've been wondering when someone would ask me that! I've been a subscriber to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that is written by a man named Dave Meltzer for quite a long time now. I was first turned on to it by a friend of mine in Chicago who used to be the ring announcer for WCW shows at the Rosemont Horizon. The Observer is the gold standard of industry publications and is the one most read backstage by those in the business. There is another highly regarded publication, the Pro Wrestling Torch, that has been around for awhile as well, but there is no one more informed or connected than Dave. Anything I cut and paste is from his website, and alot of the other things I get from being a subscriber to the newsletter. He also has a weekly radio show on Sirius.

Heel color commentators have always been a standard. Booby Heenan comes to mind as well. Heel play-by-play was an experiment that was simply too annoying to explore further.

1st time post here on The Wrestling Thread. I've been watching since the days of my grandparents yelling at the tv in the early 60's...Hard to believe sometimes it's still going. I just wanted to through a few observations from my cauiflower brain after watching all of these decades.
1. The very latest WWE is becoming a cartoon. I had a hint of it leading up to last nights show, but bringing out Vader was the final straw. It would be likened to the latest Batman movie adding Blam, Pow, Crunch etc to the screen. Please Vince, there are other ways to include the legends. And using May and the Fabulous Muola (sorry, I'm sure the spelling is bad) as "divas" and actually having to see May's bra a few weeks ago was a little more than necessary. Believe me, I like the colorful characters, but some of the stuff is over the top.
2. Too much soap opera lately. Let's quit all of the talking, and get to some wrestling.
3. HHH - Go away. No one cares anymore.
4. Speaking of HHH...the level of blood coming out of Ric Flair when they moved to USA was unreal. The problem with that "scene", and many others lately, is they don't know when to let it go. I lost interest when it kept going, and going, and going. Vince should take a page from any Hitchcock movie...sometimes not seeing it is more powerful than having it shoved into our eyeballs.
5. The skits lately have been hokey. The JR hospital skit was not funny, and way over the top.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic when I long for the Chief Jay Strongbow dance just before he finishes off the opponent. Or when Sting would appear from the sky. Remember the battles of Samartino and Zabizco? And who will ever replace the green tongue and complete madness of George the Animal. The days of the NWO were cool, until the Hulkster painted on his 5 oclock shadow. Finally, the heck with Coach. Where's Mean Gene when you need him...

I agree with a previous poster...the McMahons have no idea what the fans want. Go back to the beginning and back to the action. Yes, those were also cartoonish. But they were fun cartoons. And the storylines didn't drag on and on. They built up the rivalry, had the match, and moved onto the next adventure. Lately, it's the same old matches over several ppv's. Maybe there is the problem. It's all about the money of the big events.

Shape up, or move to the cartoon network!

That wasn't always the case. The old school territorial wrestling didn't have heel anouncers. In the old Memphis wrestling for example the announcers Lance Russell & Dave Brown were the butt of the heels jokes during the interviews. They just called the matches and conducted interviews. A heel "color commomtator is relatively new. One of the many things that has ruined wrestling today.

You young guys just don't know what you missed in the old days

Courtesy of WWE.com...

Torrie has a message for her fans
Nov. 1, 2005

Upon returning to the United States from a recent WWE tour of Austraila, Torrie Wilson went directly home to attend to some personal issues. Almost immediately, unsubstantiated rumors and speculation were running rampant about Torrie being fired or released from WWE.

ďIíve gotten so many messages from people telling me they want to help me find work. I had to call the office and ask them if they forgot to fire me,Ē joked Torrie. ďIím very glad to say that I am not fired, and I will be back as soon as I can.Ē

When asked about the nature of the issues, Torrie said that it was involving a family member and she did not want to get into it at this point in time.

ďIím really sorry I couldnít make it to the Taboo Tuesday pay-per-view, but I promise Iíll make it up to the fans somehow. It was weird not being a part of RAW Monday night. Iíll be back as soon as possible.Ē

Raw from 11/7 had a fun segment. Edge has to go to Smackdown and face Batista in a street fight this Friday. Told he cannot come back to Raw until he get's the job done.

Best match of the night was for the Tag Team Titles, Big Show & Kane (champs) vs. Murdoch & Cade...........hardcore rules. Needless to say Cade & Murdoch didn't fare well. Joey Styles is doing well as the commentator and looks like he'll be taking the lead role over Coach soon. Styles & Lawler seem to work off each other very well and they have a better "chemistry" than Coach & Lawler.

Oh yeah and the Davari charector came back thanks to Kurt Angle. Kurt's segment with the fans on the "You Suck" chant was pretty funny also.

I thought Angle's little tantrum and then the bleeping was pretty sad, personally, but that's just me.

Encyclopedia bhawk, let me ask you something.

I was watching a bit of Smackdown tonight, and I saw this team called M N M, two glamour boys and a moderately sexy female manager.

They reminded me of the Basham Brothers and Shenequa. The Basham Brothers hung around for awhile, they may even still pop up from time to time, but no Shanequa. She disappeared after maybe two months or so.

Where is she?!?!?!? Man, I'm not usually into the whole "Diva" side of the WWE, but that Nubian warrior goddess had me wanting to worship at her ebony alter.

There's something fascinating about the idea of being with a woman that could beat the **** out of you, if she was of a mind. Any ideas on what became of her?

Sheniqua (Linda Miles) won Tough Enough II in 2002. Trained by Ivory, Al Snow and Bob Holly.

After the Bashams dropped the titles to Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty at No Way Out in February 2003, the Bashams got a new push as a part of JBL's cabinet. The WWE at the time was still interested in pushing a full women's division. Sheniqua was sent down to OVW to further develop as a wrestler.

However, she clashed with Jim Cornette from day one and was known for having a terrible attitude. She lasted about a year and a half until finally being released from her developmental contract in November of 2004. Currently out of wrestling.

Some other recent news developments worth discussing...

***Jay Reso, the former Christian in WWE, has signed with TNA and will be appearing Sunday at the Genesis PPV. He has trademarked the name "Christian Cage." He won't be wrestling, but it is reported to be more than just a cameo.

I say, that's really awesome. He is a guy that will fit the TNA world perfectly, and it's refreshing to see a WWE guy realize that since he's not a 300-lb roided-up giant with limited working skills he's never going to get the push he deserves. He let his contact expire and walked. For all the c**p that Vince has given us recently, Christian Cage just became my favorite wrestler.

***Batista (Dave Bautista) suffered a legit torn right latissimus dorsi muscle (upper back) after receiving the double chokeslam from Kane and Big Show on last week's Smackdown. It was reported that "Batista will have to decide whether to attempt to rehab his back, or get the muscle re-attached through surgery. He would be out about three months with the latter procedure."

Sunday they will be doing a Raw/Smackdown double taping as they are starting a European tour on Tuesday. The main event is a three-way of Batista vs. Randy Orton vs. Eddie Guerrero for the title, so if Batista is taking the time off he's dropping the belt.

Now then, who? Randy Orton got the World Heavyweight Championship way too soon, and they turned him face ridiculously too soon. That combined with his injury they lost at least a year's worth of momentum. Now, it's a fact that Orton is the biggest single hope that WWE has for the future. Is it time to push him as the top guy again?

The you have Eddie Guerrero, who was incredibly over when he won the WWE Championship. I've always loved the guy. He had a really hard time dealing with the pressure of being the top guy, as he as putting way too much pressure on himself to do things perfectly every night (which I also think is a side effect of the WWE's insane amount of overscripting and overbooking, but, whatever). Still, he has incredible appeal and who wouldn't mind seeing him on top again?

I still don't think Orton is ready, I say let Eddie lie, cheat and steal to get the belt Sunday. He and Guerrero could have a fantastic six-month program (I've been starving for a good old-school nasty a$$, violent, hateful, long and bloody feud. What can I say? They always seem to work!) building all the way to Mania.

Hey, just one man's opinion. It's only wrestling.

***Chris Benoit's contract is expiring soon. Let's just say that the initial monetary offer is not near what it should be. Or we could say that it's definitely curtain-jerker level. At any rate, it aint respectful. I think that Benoit is without a doubt in the top 20 of all time, so I think that's ridiculous. But, hey, this is not your average business.

Too early to say what's gonna happen here. Obviously a guy who could fit right in with TNA. Shelton Benjamin (remember that guy? The amazingly talented technical wrestler?) would fit in over there too.

I would to recommend anyone who hasn't watched wrestling in awhile to check out TNA. WWE will never "go down" because they are too financially sound and they are still the top organization in the world. But, from a technical wrestling point of view, the talent in TNA is where the future of professional wrestling is. It's a very refreshing alternative. I really think that Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles will be, barring injury or what have you, two of the best ever.

If anyone has Galavision on their cable/satellite systems and you've never checked it out before, take a peek at Lucha Libre on Saturday afternoons. Usually on at 1 or 2 and is two hours long. You never know which of the two major federations in Mexico you will see, CMLL or AAA. CMLL is over 70 years old and Lucha Libre ("free fighting") has a long and rich tradition and has a special spot in Mexican culture. I do not understand more than 20 words of Spanish and whatever small storylines they have I canít understand either. But, I love watching it. The colors, the masks, the style, I just love it. It's definitely not the professional wrestling most American fans thatíve never seen it will be used to. It's just different.

Here's a little something for fun...alright, wrestling fans, if you could have any past World/WWE Champions in their prime wrestle each other, who would it be?

My answer would be Kurt Angle vs. Ric Flair.

Actually, there's about five more, but picking one is hard. Let's build a fantasy "Supercard" just to see what folks come up with.

Just a sad, sad, sad day.

Eddie Guerrero passed away this morning in his hotel room at age 38.

He had an early wake-up call shortly after 7 a.m. that he didn't answer. Chavo Guerrero, who he was traveling with, called the room and again got no answer. When knocks on his hotel room door went unanswered, security got the door open and Eddie was found dead in the bathroom. The belief at this time is he suffered a heart attack while brushing his teeth.

So unbelievably sad.

I'm sure the cause of death is going to be a massive heart attack. I liked Eddy in the ring but he has been juiced to the gills for so many years it was probably only a matter of time before this happened. So many guys have died in their late 30s and early 40s from this , you'd think they'd learn but they never do. The only question is going to be who's the next to die too young.

OMG !!! Our Shelbmeister is going to be devastated to say the least. Guerrero was one of his faves...oh my. Being at the infamous Lanaroo III this entire weekend, we haven't been up to date on our current events at all. Monday and Thursday nights Shelby totally owns the TV...he was talking about Raw last night when we got home from PA, so excited and all. He couldn't wait for tonight. He was especially excited after the Edge and Bischoff (sp) scam at Smackdown last week.

Think I best go home early and wait for our little man, I'm sure he heard the news at school by now.

What a shame and irregardless of the cause a sad, sad day for the wrestling family and fans.

Bless his entire family.....

Later, Karen
