Trying the reach Classic Rock 93.7 to see if they know anything. They aren't answering the phone.

Houston-Area Residents Flee As Rita Nears
y ALICIA A. CALDWELL, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago

GALVESTON, Texas - Traffic came to a standstill and gas shortages were reported Thursday as hundreds of thousands of people in the Houston metropolitan area rushed to get out of the path of Hurricane Rita, a monster storm with 170 mph winds.

More than 1.3 million residents in Texas and Louisiana were under orders to get out to avoid a deadly repeat of Katrina.

The Category 5 storm weakened slightly Thursday morning, and forecasters said it could be down to a Category 3 meaning winds as high as 130 mph by the time it comes ashore late Friday or early Saturday. But it could still be a dangerous storm.

"Don't follow the example of Katrina and wait. No one will come and get you during the storm," said Harris County Judge Robert Eckels said.

Highways leading inland out of Houston were gridlocked, with traffic bumper-to-bumper for up to 100 miles north of the city. Gas stations were reported to be running out of gas. Shoppers emptied grocery store shelves of spaghetti, tuna and other nonperishable items.

To speed the evacuation out of the nation's fourth-largest city, Gov. Rick Perry halted all southbound traffic into Houston along Interstate 45 and took the unprecedented stop of opening all eight lanes to northbound traffic out of the city for 125 miles. I-45 is the primary evacuation route north from Houston and Galveston.

Police officers along the highways carried gasoline to help people get out of town.

At 8 a.m. EDT, Rita was centered about 490 miles southeast of Galveston and was moving at near 9 mph. It winds were 170 mph, down slightly from 175 mph earlier in the day. Forecasters predicted it would come ashore along the central Texas coast between Galveston and Corpus Christi, with up to 15 inches of rain in places.

Hurricane-force winds extended up to 70 miles from the center of the storm, and even a slight rightward turn could prove devastating to the fractured levees protecting New Orleans.

"Now is not a time for warnings. Now is a time for action," Houston Mayor Bill White said.

He added: "There is no good place to put a shelter that could take a direct hit from a Category 5 hurricane. I don't want anybody out there watching this and thinking that somebody is bound to open a local school for me on Friday, not with a hurricane packing these kinds of winds."

This SUCKS big time....we have been waiting for this show for a LONG time....whatever happened to postponing a show and coming back to honor our tickets?? I know a few people here that are riding the storm just in the hopes that the show wouldn't cancel.....although we knew better!! We are very faithful fans.

KAZIUP,

You and your friends do yourself a favor and "GROW UP". You got a major hurricane hitting the area, people evacuating and you're worring about a concert? There are things in life more important, like people safety. I doubt seriously if someone like Butch Truck read this thread he would consider you a "faithful fans", he would consider you being an "idiot". Do yourself a favor, and pack-up and head out of town and BE SAFE and BE SMART.

While the show must go on, I must concur that safety comes first and I don't want the ABB or it's fans to be in danger.

Concerts can be re-scheduled; death is forever, but still preferable to Celine Dion's music.

I was using what I said as an illustration, and btw, I've talked to Butch Trucks by PM's on occasions and Butch is extremely intelligent and articulate person and there is no doubt in my mind that if someone is staying in the Houston area in hopes of an ABB concert that he would consider their actions somewhat "idiotic". People lives and safety come first, no matter who says it.

Kind of hard to do when your guitarists have other bands with tours starting in a couple weeks.

Got this from the ACL site just now:

Update on Hurricane Rita & ACL
Just like you, we are keeping a very close watch on the weather and are being advised by meteorologists. If weather conditions appear to present any kind of danger to fans, musicians or crew, we are prepared to make the necessary adjustments to maintain safety.

We will post a notice this evening about any Festival changes due to the hurricane. Look here for updates.

Sucks about the show. We are riding out the storm up in Conroe, but not in hopes of seeing the show. Best of luck to anyone else staying in town. Hopefully for us it keeps tracking eastward.

If you're willing to brave a storm that's more than likely to kill you just to see a show, than yeah, you're being a real numbskull about it.

Just pack your things and get outta Texas, pal....That storm is gonna hit hard, and you don't wanna get caught in it when it comes.

Yeah, really. I was hoping for some excitement. We prepared for the worst and got the least. Fortunately we still have power, and I'm able to watch the ACL fest today. Panic's coming up. Robert Randolph just did a great set.
