I just read that there is a version of "Melissa" that Gregg and Duane recorded when they were in the band called "31st of February". Does anyone know where to get a copy of this recording?

Awesome, thanks.

Zen, maybe you can also tell me this. I know Duane played on some songs of Eat A Peach. Which ones? And did Dickey play the slide on "Aint' Wasting Time No More". Love that guitar work, and I assume it was Dickey since I think the song was written about Duane's death, right?

MagicPeach, here's a thread from July that discusses this first version of "Melissa" and the album it appeared on; some posts there also have links to further discussion of the album and "Melissa":

If Otie doesn't mind, I'll jump in and answer your Eat a Peach questions while I'm at it.

Duane is on all the live tracks, recorded in March and June 1971 at the Fillmore East, NY:
"One Way Out," "Trouble No More," and "Mountain Jam."

Duane is on these studio tracks, cut (or like with "Standback," just started) shortly before his death in October 1971:
"Standback," "Blue Sky," and "Little Martha."

The rest of the songs were recorded by the 5-man band after Duane's passing:
"Ain't Wastin' Time No More," "Les Brers in A minor," and "Melissa."

You are correct, MP: Dickey plays the slide on "Ain't Wastin' Time No More." I have seen it said that Gregg wrote that song about Duane--maybe more than just about his death, although the death taught some lessons about life to the survivors.

I have the vinyl version of that album. Wish I had a stereo receiver that worked.

No CD version, huh? I sold my turntable in 1987. Bummer.
