I debated this recently on another thread, but it never was finished...and seeing as how I got an email regarding this topic just today...I'm slow to check my PM's....I figured I would answer it here too;

quote:
Hey Bro,

I'm assuming you haven't heard the album "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Grateful Dead." Or the album "Bear's Choice: History of The Grateful Dead, Pt. 1." Or for that matter, Bill Graham introducing them as "THE Grateful Dead" at the One From the Vault show.

As somebody else said, I'm not sure who told you this, but they were pulling your leg.

The band can be called "the" Grateful Dead, and it even says it on a couple of the albums, and it's been used by Bill Graham to introduce them.

But it's not the official name of the band...only Grateful Dead is. The Skull & Roses album is Grateful Dead, their last release says just "Grateful Dead" "Built To Last".

Check out this page here;

http://gdstore.com/

Do ya see "the" in front of all the titles? The few times it was done was a mistake...the band as always maintained it's Grateful Dead only...no "the".

Hope this helps...it's a minor issue at best, completely irrelevent at worst...but I like to debate trivial things because the big issues get all the attention and don't need my input.

Can we talk about "The" Allman Brothers Band too? That is what Bert says in his intro's. I think this is just about using proper english when refering to a band by name.

I would say......let it go already. Why not just email the person back who wrote you. I've been a Dead Head since 1977 and couldn't care less whether or not "the" goes before their name. We all know who we are talking about either way, right?

What about the "Grateful" part? That always seemed superfluous, as the fans had been calling them "the Dead" for years. It seems that when they tried to tour under that moniker, people didn't connect with who they were. A skull and rose by any other name!

the Grateful part means so much more, now...especially to those of us who thought "The Dead" rising from the ashes of The Other Ones was a joke. Nowadays, you have to keep "Grateful" around, for folks to realize you mean the actual band, not the reunion go around.

I was just setting the record straight...whether or not you like it.

Not trying to get under anyone's skin. Just opinion. Even you stated that you already touched on this subject in another thread.

If you want to be technical, I believe they are supposed to be "GRATEFUL DEAD". I've read that from a band member or band members at one point... The "the" issually added to make it sound gramatically correct... If someone doesn't want to accept that... WHO CARES!

Incidentally, I think they may have started as "The Grateful Dead", but Pink Floyd also started as "The Pink Floyd"...

I like how you capitalized "official" in the title of the thread
like that is supposed to have any merit.

the fillet-o-fishel tiltle of this thread is "why ?"

I'll say this again, how is what the Dead/TOO are doing any different than what the ABB are doing. Should the Dead/TOO remained Grateful? Should the Allman Brothers Band change their name? Why are so many around here OK with this double standard?

Their situations are very similar. Both camps have continued to tour after losing numerous members. One band has continued to reinvent itself by creating new music while having a revolving door of members. The other has also to a lesser extent had members come and go, and has decided against making new music. One kept the same name, and one could say, is living off the original name and music. One decided to change names, and one could say, is living off the original music. One was called a "reunion" band. One is ok staying "as was".

Can someone narrow it down and give me a concise answer?

Just so you know, the official title of this thread is "Official title of the band Grateful Dead contains no 'the'"

Hope that clears everything up!

It makes no difference if there is or isn't a "the". With or without it people know who your talking about.
