Can anyone recommend me a good Wayne Shorter album(s) to start with. I'm trying to improve in the improvisation area of my ole' tenor sax and I thought this guy might be able to help me. Thanks for any suggestions.

John

if you have a good record shop (ours in DC is melody records on connecticut ave.) with a good cut out bin...any blue note - rudy van gelder recording from the sixties...they are incredible and still sound advanced.

some titles:

ETC
schizophrenia
adam's apple
the all seeing eye
the soothsayer
speak no evil

the other players on these titles are hall of fame as well

most of these are available from internet jazz music dealers as well.

"Speak No Evil" is a good place to start IMO.

Try Juju as well. It's Shorter with the Coltrane quartet minus Coltrane (McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Reggie Workman). No, not Garrison. But still an amazing album. Also check out any of Shorter's work with the Miles quintet, a la Miles Smiles, Nefertiti, etc. That's some unbelievable music. If you want professional guidance, go to allmusic.com and choose for yourself.

I love Wayne's playing in Weather Reports " Heavy Weather" and Steely Dan's "AJA".

You can also find used CDs on Amazon. The prices are generally fair, and in my 60 or 70 experiences of using this, I've never been burned. The one time someone sent the wrong item, we worked out a return and refund quickly. It's safe, IMHO.

You can find used anything there: books (of course!), DVDs, videos, and on and on.

I've love to hear Wayne's "Native Dancer".
However, if you are seeking for straight ahead jazz type solo of Wayne Shorter, you should better search and try for from bluenote lavels as aeyeq posted.
