I think it's kinda neat that these songs are getting a rest on this leg. I wonder if Gregg is making the setlists now and was perhaps was getting sick of them. Maybe those were Warren choices? I think they rested Melissa a few years ago and then did it when they did a short accoustical set, which I think is a good place for both songs.

Not to mention Soulshine and Rocking Horse?

Songs I don't need to hear again at an ABB show:

Melissa
Midnight Rider
Statesboro Blues

Statesboro Blues is their song, and I love the other two, so I hope Gregg revives 'em.

If they play all 3, are you buying?

I really liked the way Dickey and Warren used to play Midnight Rider back in '94-95, but since Warren and Derek have both been in the fold, they've played it pretty much straight with nothing new added, ie, it's as close as the ABB gets to filler. It's one of my favorite tunes, but they need to do something with it.

As for Statesboro Blues, I don't think I'll ever get sick of them playing that, especially when Derek rips it up.

Well maybe they're not playing any HTN tunes because Warren hasn't been there.. and he usually sings Rocking Horse.

don't fix it if it ain't broke. Warren does play the Midnight Rider solo different from show to show. He doesn't play it the same way every time. I don't know that he could do it if he tried. Melissa and Statesboro are two of the fans favorite songs. They could play Statesboro Blues every show and it wouldn't get old to me. I think they could speed Old BMTime up but I'm not sure how it would come across. Would have been kinda cool to hear an acoustic version at the Beacon. Kinda like Mule's Wine and Blood.

I thought when Lee started this thred he was dissappointed they weren't playing these...Now I get it.

All I know is, The ABB does a great job at mixing things up - and just when you think a song has possibly dropped out of sight it magically re-appears....and just when you might be a bit tired of hearing a song they sort of put it to rest for a bit. Personally, I think that's cool as sh!t...

I enjoy the way the band has been mixing up set lists over recent years. I'll take whatever they play on a given night.

Would really like to hear the band do a version of Gregg's "God Rest His Soul". What a great song this is!

I bet "Melissa" is laying low as long as that Cingular TV ad campaign is still going on.

ooo that is a great one!! That would freeze everyone.

Am I the only one that thinks it would be kinda cool to see a two song encore maybe with a solo song from Gregg or Warren or a combined Warren-Derek like they did at the Beacon w/ Death Letter and Old Friend?

They don't necessarily need to retire a tune but use it differently. "Midnight Rider" is a great tight set piece and when I saw the band in NH in July they segued right from that to "Dreams" and then into ""Liz Reed." it was a magnificent forty-five minutes and it was all launched from a point you would not expect.

SB is a song I don't think I would get tired of ever myself. Midnight Rider holds a whole new meaning for me since I met Kim Payne and became friends so I guess I hear it differently now.

As for Melissa, I don't care if I ever hear that song again. Gregg knows other songs on the acoustic and he should play those.

Saturday was my 20th ABB show, and the first time they didn't play Statesboro Blues at a show I attended. That is the first Allman Brothers song I ever heard, and even at a young age I stopped and went "Oh wow, who is that?". I'll never be tired of hearing that tune live. Old Before My Time just kills the momentum of a show when they play it. It takes the air right out of the balloon. Although it is difficult to go 90 miles an hour for a 2 hour and 40 minute performance, sometimes a show never recovers from it. The show in Rockford last year comes to mind as an example.

I wouldn't want to see MR go. Melissa is overplayed. Statesboro...I never need to hear this again. They tear it up, no doubt. But, really, I'm bored with it anyway.

It seems the band must give some kind of nod to commercialism.........I have always thought that since Dickey got the boot and Ramblin' Man and Blue Sky pretty much left the setlist, they have felt they must include a couple more recognizable tunes, ala Midnight Rider and Melissa, to please the newbies if no one else.
