Many to choose from but Charlotte 8.9.03 does it for me. The 3.21.05 w/ Chuck is excellent, as well.

Good call. Just put that in - soulfull performance and I like the channel separation that the IL provides.

I have seen them do it many times, probably close to 10 (including the 9-25 Fox show), and the best by far was the 3-21-03 version at the Beacon, the second time they did it. Derek hit every single note dead nuts. There is a close-to-soundboard recording of this show circulating and its well worth seeking out.

Don't think I've mentioned this to anyone outside Gadsden, doesn't mean squat anyway.....
I was at 3/21/03 and 9/25/04, but my favorite has to be 3/14/03, when Butch came out and introduced it for the encore. Back in the old HTW days, Butch used to come on his Forum page and respond to questions. Before the '01 Beacon run, he asked what we might like to hear. I responded that, now that Derek and Warren were on the front line, they might want to do Layla as a tribute to Duane and Tom Dowd. Butch replied that he thought it was an excellent idea, and that he would take it to the band to see what they thought. Mr. Dowd left this world in the fall of '02, Butch's dedication was almost identical to what I posted in his Forum. I don't know if the post had anything to do with what happened 3/14/03, but it crossed my mind a week later. First meeting with many of you earlier that day. Lifetime memory.

3-14-03 is a memorable night for me. Hearing Butch's speech gave me goosebumps. Never in my lifetime would I think of hearing Layla but they pulled it off.

3-21-05 is the best I've ever heard. Watching Chuck play the piano part sent me into tears. That'll be a tough one to top in my opinion, unless they ever get Eric Clapton to play it with them....

3/21/05 with Chuck takes the prize in my book.

Honorable mention to 7/13/03, I was there and Layla was the opener and it moved me to tears that night.

I love the 3-21-05....

but for my money the best version is the 8-8-03 version... spot on and could have been on the original album it was so good...

edit: I meant the 8-8-03 version not the 8-9-03

I'd have to say 9/19/03 at Red Rocks, if for no other reason than that's the only one I've heard them do live. Last song of the night, and Derek just ripped it!

I agree...a killer!....also the second night in Chicago in 2003...two beauties and my picks for best ever.
I was at 3/21/03 as well, which was only the second performance ever of "Layla" - a VERY touching moment during that incredible show which seriously smoked from start to finish...I still get goosebumps when I listen to that show...

3/21/03, cuz it was the first time I had heard them do it (second time they played it) and you could just sense that it was coming as they had played it for the first time the Friday (3/14/03) before this one.

I agree - because it was the first time I had heard it and only the second time they ever played it!!! What an encore that was!!!!

Agreed about 8/8/03 in Atlanta. I was at that show and the 8/9/03 show, both great versions but Derek really got ahold of both his solos (the fast paced one near the end and the coda) on the 8/8/03 show. 3/21/03 would be third for me (didn't think the one from 9/25/04 touched any of the above).

3/14/03 I was front row! Totally didn't expect it and I was in tears! Seeing Butch come out there to Oteil's mic right in front of me, I knew something was about to happen!

...on a side note: 3/21/03 besides being a complete smoker show with the second version ever of Layla, it also featured the debut performance of "Into The Mystic" if my memory serves me well...I remember being in orchestra saying to myself..."oh yeah!". It just fit so well with this lineup and was hoping it remained in the rotation for a long time - and it has. The cool thing is, its only played once in a while which adds to the special feeling that song brings to a show...

That's one of the best Beacon shows (3-21-03, that is) since Warren came back.

They also played A Change Is Gonna Come that night as well

Not great with dates, but can always remember the experience. It was the second time the song was done at the Beacon. I remember the anticipation of waiting to see if we would get another Layla. or if this had been just a one time tribute to Duane and Tom Dowd. It was a great show and then there it was the crowd went wild. From looking at the other posts I think the date was 3-21-03. I've heard it several times live since then, but that night was special.
