A good read if you like the Dead, be sure to read pages 174-177 about the ABB

I agree. I read it while on a road trip a couple of weeks ago. Very complementary towards the ABB.

yeah, a great read across the board--it's always good to get the autobiographical side of things like that.

Great book. I was really impressed with Phil's writing ability and style. Definitely an articulate guy. And a little "out there" too.

I loved the book. It seemed very honest to me. Likes of kind words towards many people (especially certain members of the band) but also many blunt statements about some bad habits and other character flaws, which is hard to do as tastefully as it was done.

Good point. I noticed that he was able to "tell it like it was" without it getting seedy on the one hand, and without glossing over it on the other. For instance, I thought he needed a liver transplant from drinking, but that wasn't the case.

What an excellent book! He sure made me want to be in San Francisco in 1966! (Of course, I was seven years old at that time...) I hope to read it again before the start of school in the fall.

"Midnight Riders"? Ooh--that's a very touchy subject around here. Some people like it. Some hate it. Many are in between those extremes. (It's my understanding that several band members hate it.)

You might be better served by Willie Perkins's recent book "No Saints, No Saviors", Chuck Leavell's "Between Rock and a Home Place", or even Red Dog's "A Book of Tails". (I confess that I haven't gone back to re-read Dog's book because of the grammar errors and the way it's written. But that's just me--many people love it, and I'm glad Dog told his story. I just wish there was more careful editing is all...)

Willie's book and Chuck's book are both available through the fine folks at Hittin' the Note. I'm not sure if Red Dog's book is available through HTN or not.
