Yesterday my fifteen-year-old told me he saw that Derek is on the cover of a current guitar magazine . . . anybody got any info on this, or is he pulling my chain? We're cool like that . . . he'll call me a dirty hippy while I'm jamming to a half-hour Liz Reed, or something (I'm neither dirty nor a hippy), and I'll return with something like . . . ah, sounds like your [punker] guitar hero learned a 2nd chord.

Anyway, I thought the mag might have been Guitar World. Apparently it isn't, but while searching for Derek references, I found this quote by Phil Lesh (the interviewer had just mentioned the ABB connection via Jimmy and Warren):

LESH: Also, Derek Trucks has been in my band and is one of my favorite players, welcome on my stage at any time.

I thought that was pretty cool.

My kids do the same thing with me. We banter back and forth and they eventually throw in the "hippy" comment during the conversation. :-) I keep telling my son (14 y.o.) that someday, he'll realize how great Duane Allman was, as well as Derek and Warren, for their amazing guitar work.

Have Joyfull Noise myself and is great.

The review in Blender, however, is less than complamentary. Shows what they know.

I can see where some people may not like the album...it does have quite the array of songs on it: from R&B, world, Indian, jazz, blues. Some people's taste don't run the whole nine yards...but, IMO it's a great damn piece of music making and that band is only going to get better...amazing....

Thanks again for that heads up on Vintage Guitar, but a trip to the local supermarket during my lunch break suggested that my son was probably refering to a mag called Guitar One. The cover story is called "the new guitar heroes" or something like that, and features ten up and coming players. The cover pictures four of those ten: Joe Bonamassa(sp?), Derek Trucks, something Mayer, and something Cifarelli (sp?). Each has a brief one-two page interview on "being a guitar hero" and a nice photo. Guitar Player, however, while it does not have Derek on the cover, does have a pretty long interview with him, where a variety topics concerning his background and influences are discussed.

Nice to see our boy is getting some exposure.

Brings to mind Santana's SUPERNATURAL (though with less of a stab at being chart-friendly). Lots of well-structured jams. Quality guest vocalists, all centerd around Trucks' distinctive tone and superb band.

I doubt there are any better songs recorded this year than the Solomon Burke gems : "Home In Your Heart" and "Like Anyone Else". Well, if there's any better they're probably on Burkes's latest DON'T GIVE UP ON Me (which i need to go cop, ASAP!)
