Is it true that when you use FLAC Frontend and MKW Audio Compress to convert files for burning that it becomes an mp3 file? If so, how do I burn a shn file (or flac file) to a disc to take with me?

Can someone clarify, please.

Maybe I'm answering the wrong question here but....when I get a SHN file and use the MKW frontend, it becomes an audio file. It converts the SHN to audio as it puts it on your harddrive. I think....

Hey Marley. Is your above quote in reference to mine :

To be direct: I download a show in FLAC/SHN, then use Flac Frontend/MKW Audio Compression to convert the files to wav, then burn those files to cd. Is this ok to trade?

Thanks. That's what I thought all along but got confused by some of the dialog earlier on in this thread.

5-8-77 seems to be a favorite with lots of folks. I'd like to give it a listen (no GD but lost of other band to trade).

otherhandmer enlightened me with 5/8/77 (fantastic performance, great sound), where should I go from here?

I agree with just about everything people have said here. I think Tom talked about the Cal Expo run in the spring of '93. I went to those shows and the preceeding 3 before that at Shoreline. I think some of the moments at Cal Expo that run may be some of the last great moments the Dead had. I know this will sound crazy, but I believe 5/26/93 may have the best if not one of the best Playin in the Band's ever, and that includes the ones from '74. It's like this last piece of magic they pulled out of the hat. You should get that whole run, there are some really fine moments. Like I said it's like they found the old magic just a few more times. THere is a great Gloria as an encore one of the nights that is rockin as well.

no, they become .wav files, and are suitable for burning to take with you.

I would reccomend picking a show from random areas in the archive and streaming it to hear what that era generally sounded like...I beleive the Dead shows are streamable...some of them, anyhow.

11/7/69 is good
Live/Dead recording run 2/27/69-3/2/69
anything from 74.
5/16/93 Las Vegas is cool
6/9/77 set 2 is awesome
3/29/90 and anything with Branford is sweet.

I had fun at the Red Rocks shows back in September 1983 especially the first night. Also some of the Irvine Medows shows jammed too.

Rather than point out individual shows, it can also be informative for newer folks to tell 'em about the different "phases" that GD music went thru.
68-71 Good old GD, with Pig still around, great cowboy tunes, blues workouts, psychedelic jams, electrified bluegrass
72-74 Height of the psychedelic jam era
76-79 More focused, more lyrical jams, more and more songs into the playlist
80-85 Contrasting trends- Jer's drug problems slowly eat away at health, still many fantastic shows to be heard, but less band communication in the jams. More influence from Bob and Brent
86-early 89 Personal opinion here- marking of time-still lotsa good 'uns, but creative peaks are levelling out
late 89-91 Phoenix, Jerry really rises again, some fantastic playing, tons of new songs, some of the jams cover same old ground, but others seem fresh
92-94 downhill
OK, like I said, personal opinion. Any other comments?
