Anybody got a question for DT?

Derek Trucks returns to Honest Tunes Radio Show for a live webcast interview at 8:00 PM Central time on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. I'm looking for musically insightful questions that will get Derek talking about the history of music, his deep understanding of world music cultures, and Derek's touch on the guitar.

Please post questions here on HTW for the Derek interview, or find me on here:
http://www.panicfreaks.org/showthread.php?t=82948
Or just tune in the webcast from the links above. Thanks for any input.

P.S. Hello HTW. I'm new here, help me out. There are so many sections! I'm posting under "Derek Trucks". Is it alright to copy this message into other sections?

Q : I know your a big Coltrane fan, and I've heard you site A Love Supreme and Live at Birdland as your favorites, but what do you think about the place Coltrane went after that era with shows like Live in Japan? Mainly all the stuff he did right before he passed. Also....ever think about performing A Love Supreme live, or maybe just Resolution? haha, I had to ask.

Who is the player (not necessarily guitar) who influenced you the most?

Derek: I noticed you early on took a liking to Coltrane's Giant Steps album (naima, mr. pc), what did you find at such an early age in that album, and what is your favorite piece from it. Also, youve worked some of your non slide work to sound like a tenor sax, is there any chance of you performing or have you performed "countdown" from the Giant Steps album?!?! -Chris M. , Scranton, PA

EDIT: Heyy welcome man. What a great way to start out with this post!! Anywho, this is the best place to post it!

Had you not taken the offer to join the Allman Brothers Band, do you think that the Derek Trucks band would be at the evolutionary point that it is today? the DTB is in a wonderful place right now, but watching the DTB evolve greatly over recent years, seems to have really gotten started when you joined the Brothers. Maybe having the Brothers as an outlet for that side of your playing opened up the DTB to become what it is today?

Q: What was your childhood life like? Growing up, listening to music, etc... sports? Just curious, and did you ever think because your uncle is in the allman brothers, that if you learned guitar you could possibly play in their legendary band? Come Back To Syracuse, NY!! PLEASE

Q: When do you expect the Derek Trucks Band to get back into the studio and start working on a new album. I've been loving all the new songs from live shows and can't wait to hear them on an album. Also, same question with the Allman Brothers since I've heard that there are plans to start writing more new material. Can't wait to hear anything new with you playing on it.

Three questions:

1. What are you listening to right now? What tune was last in your head?
2. Speak to us a bit about the book "The Mystecism of Sound and Music" and it's influence on you and your playing?
3. Last month you participated in the "East meets West" concert in Savannah. What was it like playing with the Bangish Brothers? Will we ever get to hear a collaboration again?

Q. In August '03 you and Mike did 4 acoustic songs during a WFMU radio interview, you were playing Bukka White's national steel guitar and the two (or three) of you sounded great. Would you consider doing the same type of acoustic set at one of your shows?

Alright! There are some good questions coming up in this thread. My request, if anyone can do me a favor, please forward the webcast link / first post in this thread, to your music friends or other Derek-boards. Remind folks the webcast is live online Tuesday at 8:00 PM Central Time Zone on www.dgold.info

groundswellllc,
can you give me a little more background on what you know of Derek's connection to the book, "The Mystecism of Sound and Music"? Are you speculating, or you know Derek would have a response to this?

ozzypie, that is awesome about Derek playing Bukka White's national steel guitar on the WFMU radio interview. I don't know yet if there's any chance Derek will bring a guitar to our interview at KXUA radio tomorrow. I'll just say: I hope so!

I would like to know what drove you to start playing slide. You have a avery unique sound. Also to me you have filled a void that's been there for 34 years. I know Duane would be very proud of you,As gregg and the rest of the band are. I would aslo like to know who signed your SG and what does it say. YOU made the Brothers real again. I can see the way Gregg looks at you , he see's where he was at in 71.KEEP JAMMIN'

Those questions have been answered in old reviews. The answer to why Derek started with Slide was because when you're at nine years old, it hurts to play with your fingers, and slide felt more natural to him.

Autographs on the SG and his other guitar include: Otis Rush, Elvin Jones, Bobby Bland, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Family Man Barrett, Aubrey Ghen, Chuck Campbell, Bob Margolin, Hubert Sumlin, & Walter Wolfeman Washington

They might record something later this year, but it probably wouldn't get released until early '06.

I am still planning to ask Derek for info about DTB's next album, in his own words.

Now that the day of the interview is here, I am very excited. I hope some of y'all can tune in the webcast tonight, or even record it?

i have class tonight, so I can't tune in...does it get archived on your site? I'm assuming no, since you want people to record it.

I believe the liner notes of "Soul Serenade" have a quote from this book somewhere. The book is about "Sufi" teachings. Absolutely incredible reading. This teaching theorizes that the highest form of spirituality comes directly from music. After reading the quote, I picked up the book. It is mind-blowing.

If you want to simplify the question, you could ask him about Indian music and philosophy. I'm sure he would talk about Ravi or Ali Akbar Khan. I think if you mention Sufi Teachings he would have a great deal to say as he holds the book and Indian music in such high regard.

One more question could be this:
What is the corniest "guilty pleasure" recording you own? Do you have any bad '80's pop music in your collection, or is your collection all serious?

Q: I think your rhythm guitar playing is just as amazing as your lead playing, I didnt notice too much in past years but lately its really been improving, it's really intense now. You and Oteil are amazing at backing up a soloist, same when you play with Kofi and Todd. Who influenced you the most on your rhythm playing?

Thanks again groundswellllc. I plan to lead into that line of questions you suggested. Appreciate the background info, that helps me know wtf I'm asking about.

I just found out -- Derek might bring a steel guitar to the radio show tonight! We are scheduled for an interview, but there's a chance we could get a short acoustic set, live on the air. We'll be webcasting starting in about 3 hours from now, on http://www.dgold.info/radio/

No, KXUA does not archive the audio stream. I need someone to record it please. You can use the program "Stream Ripper" but the unpaid demo will cut off after 30 minutes. There are other ways to record it, headphone jack > DAT or cassette. If anyone captures it, I'd like to get a copy. Thanks y'all.

Thanks for the great job Dgold!
What a treat to hear him comment on that book. It is really incredible, especially to all of you rabbid music fanatics out there.
Check it out:
"The Mysticism of Sound and Music" by Hazrat Inayat Kahn.

Sounded like "This Sky" is heavily influenced as well by writings in a similar vein.

Really enjoyed it. Thanks once again.

Tim
