I'm new to the forum, so be gentle: I was at the Monday March 21st Show and saw an awesome show. To anyone who has seen the band play Egypt, what did you think? I thought it was a great instrumental. I'm hoping this will be on an Instant Live REAL soon. Do we know who wrote this comp?

Oteil wrote it, it's an instrumental piece based on his song "Walk Like A Man" that was played twice on the 2000 tour. It was worked up in rehearsals. I'm sure it will end up on many an Instant Live from this summer's tour, however you don't have to wait that long, just wander on over to the trades forum and get yourself a free recording of it through a b&p or trade. I was lucky enough to be at the very first 2 performances of the song, and I enjoyed it a lot, good new stuff.

If I had to compare it to anything I woulld say it sort of Santanaish, from maybe their Caravanseri days. However, the chords and the harmonizing guitars are unlike anything I've heard in this context, real moody & sweet. I think as they tighten this song up a little, it is going to be a classic. The song can go in any direction. I can't wait to get my hands on this song.

I don't remember by whom, but wasn't "Walk Like A Man" a popular song back in the 60's?

Different song, same title.

I heard two versions of Egypt a few times each on Live365 and thought they were very, very good.

Well.....I really like the basis for the song and the opening segment...I just don't think the whole thing has "jelled" yet into a real cohesive tune from start to finish.
That's not meant to be a completely negative opinion about Egypt, just an observation of where the song is right now at the end of March 2005.
(BTW...I thought the same thing about "New Instrumental" as it was turning into Instrumental Illness a few years ago...)

I was at 17, 18, 19, and 22, and they played Egypt only on 17 and 18, and boy they were smokin'. Hope it shows up on Instant Lives and on their new CD.

i was at 15 and 21 and can say that i really like egypt. when i first heard it on live365 i thought it was alright, after seeing it on 15 i thought it was good but after 21 i thought it was a damn good one. i think eventually egypt could be really nice as a show opener just like mountain jam, like the calm before the storm.

Haven't heard Egypt but I never really connected with Illness. Hope you're right about this new one. If nothing else it will reduce the appearances of Illness in the sets

The bar IS awfully high isn't it?

The version of the 18th was amazing, very intense. Derek's solo this past tour on that song has been amazing everytime, but It was Warren that sealed the deal that night, both of their solos were some of the best I've ever heard in music, the whole band was ON.

Thank goodness. I was imagining Gregg singing the Frankie Valli vocal part!

I loved the first performance I heard - I think 3/14/05 - Derek was playing a very "middle eastern" type of riff pulling off notes on the high E in his solo and it was way off the charts...... oh my my.....
at the same time it does have an "Allman Brothers" instrumental feeling to it....
a nifty piece of music by the Big O.......
