Dickey is great no doubt about it. But I think the band needs to hear it from the fans that we love them and want them to continue on forever. Dickey is a essential part to the allmans history. But I think its time that we put him into the past and let the allmans be the allmans. I think people just need to stop missing dickey so much and let our boys know we still love them.

I wish he was still in the band too... but then the only contstant is change. However, Derek and Warren should be able to hold down the fort just fine.

you are just a mean spirited idiot.you take apart o new trader for a newbies mistake in the forum for everyone to see,you compare dickey leaving to duanes death there is no similairity, dickey had achoice and made it then the rest of the brothers made there choice duane and berry had no choice in there leaving except to hit a bus ,or truck or dump there bikes.your support of dickey is laudable but your consistent trashing of abb is ludicrous.if you have nothing good to say then say nothing at all.you seem to have distinct opinions as you have a right to but they are your opinions so please do not trash others for stating theres just because they are not yours if you want respect from others on this sight try giving a little

The very last thing I intend to do is get into the whole ''with Dickey vs. without Dickey'' conflict but just wanted to post my take on things, not that anybody really cares. I've seen ABB twice this Summer, seen DB & GS twice this Summer. All four shows were EXCELLENT. The last times I saw Dickey play with ABB was the Summer '99 tour(twice) and I have to admit that I thought his playing had slipped somewhat;the peaks were just as high but the valleys were lower and there were more valleys than what I expected. That being said, the two shows this Summer(most recently8-17) found Mr. Betts in fine form both vocally and instrumentally, much to my delight. Personally I'm just thankful that I had the opportunity to hear music of this caliber from two great outfits and I hope they both play for a long time whether it be in their present incarnations or different ones. Lest anybody think I'm taking any jabs at Dickey, consider this - I'm seriously contemplating an 800 mile round trip(Cleveland to Indianapolis and back) tomorrow by myself to catch Great Southern at Rib Fest in Indianapolis.Ciao.

Dickey Betts has been one of my Guitar heroes for over 24 years and I still consider him one of the most influential in my playing. However, after seeing the current line up and what they produce Dickey could not hang with this band. In fact, Dickey coming back-which is not going to happen- would be an insult to the fans because it would be disingenuine at best. True Dickey was an incredable force in the ABB's music, but he always needed someone to compete with or push him so to say. Dan Toler is not that guy. Duane, Warren and Chuck were. Be that as it may like a recent article stated "this is not your Daddy's Allman Brothers Band." It is time to move on and realize that this is as good as it gets, and in my opinion it can't get much better, the Brothers sound, look , and feel great.

Seems as though Butch and Gregg could take this advice too!

Southernman, I agree with most of what you said. I don't think you get it. I go to Dickey's Shows too. He will be missed the Allman will never be the same without him. I dunno if I would say he was half the allmans but he was a insanely HUGE contribution. I do think losing Dickey was like losing Duane. But I don't think that a band is going to kick out one of the founding members if they didn't think it would be best for them. I hadn't seen a new Allman Brothers album released in a long time now they are releasing albums and so is Dickey.

I just think we need to be behind both of them instead of giving them all a hard time.

Sorry you think i am ignorant.

SouthernMan, how old are you? I think I remember reading in some post that you're 39. Well, I'm offended by your 39 year old ignorance, and if I'm wrong about your age, I apologize. Whatever age you are, you're IGNORANT.
How dare you criticize a new member to the forum!!! You just want to turn everybody away from this site, don't you? He was just expressing his opinion and you degrade him. I agree with him, instead of bitching about the past, and putting down Butch and Gregg, why not let the current band know how great they really are, and how we appreciate them still carrying on after 30+ years. We are so blessed to be able to hear them live still, hear some new songs that are very, very good, and most of all experience two of the greatest guitarists we've seen in years in Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. Most of the old bands now are just a small fragment of what they used to be, IMO, and are commercial sellouts.
I think it's great to have a 19 year old in this time of lousy music(if you can call today's music..music), that loves and appreciates the ABB current and past. And I also think it's great for him to come on this forum and express his opinions. Why would you put him down and turn him away?
Last time I checked, there were 7 members(6 originally) and they were called the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, not the Dickey Betts Band. I think the other members had some say in the band's music, and the performance of it. He was a major part of the band, but not THE band.
I do give you credit though SouthernMan, at least you didn't mention Lynyrd Skynyrd in this post. And that, for you, is an accomplishment!!!

That Smell.....what's that smell? Why it's none other than.....SouthernMan.

Tim/enlightenrouge, sorry that you think I am soundly thrashing the Allman Brothers Band. I was expressing my opinion, nothing more.

I agree that sometimes I am harsh in my comments, even meanspirited. And I often apologize to people for my responses. Therefore, I will measure some of my responses that deserve further consideration on my part, and I do this because I really did not want to start a war, or to bash someone who is young. Personally, I think it is great that young people such as the person who started this thread, are participating. I apologize for being abrasive. I hope you continue to participate. Like a lot of people, I need to be reigned in at times. I need to be called on the spot when I come on too strong. I have no great desire to turn someone from this forum. So, let me consider some of my statements.
*****************************************************************

"The Allman Brothers Band will not be the Allman Brothers Band without Dickey Betts."

This is just how I feel, and I don't really care if someone else does not agree. Many of you rant and rave about Derek and Warren. I have to witness that all the time, so allow me my opinion.
******************************************************************

"The Allman Brothers simply used his songs. With the songs Dickey has, and with Dickey's maturity, and with his great new band, Dickey has finally been able to move on with some real dignity."

Again, I feel Dickey's songs are his songs, and he has the right to those songs. No, I don't care if they first came out on an Allman Brothers record. Dickey wrote the songs, period. They are his.
******************************************************************
"I am offended by the 19 year old ignorance in this column."

Ok, I made an ass of myself here. This was totally uncalled for, very harsh, very unfriendly. I deserved to be thrashed for that comment. I deserved to be called on that comment.
******************************************************************
"Dickey was easily half the band when he left. Losing Dickey Betts is just like losing Duane Allman."

I find no fault with this opinion. Many people on this website minimize Dickey Betts. That is the right of all who choose to feel as they will. I loved Duane on guitar. Duane was a genius. Duane was the south's answer to Eric Clapton, and more. However, I believe Dickey has been slighted throught his career. I think he is the favorite whipping boy of allman brothers fans. Dickey is and was a genius. The allman brothers fame was made with Dickey. Maybe someone could have played guitar, and the band could have done better. But that is to rewrite history. Whether some of you like it or not, Dickey was there and HE wrote the songs that he wrote. Who would you have had take his place? Who would have written the classic songs? Why do some of you negate 1972 to 1989. I can't stand that cloud of weakness and incompetence that people throw over Dickey simply because he was not Duane Allman. And Warren is also not Duane Allman. I like Dickey because he does not embrace the styles that Duane, Warren and Derek lean to. This is my god given right to prefer Dickey's guitar work over Warren, Duane, and Derek. But actually, I have way more respect for Duane than it might sound. I am just happy that I got to hear Duane with Dickey and Dickey without Duane. Sure, Duane overshadowed Dickey. Sure, Duane was an awesome player, and was a real artist. Nevertheless, Dickey is still a real artist in his own right. Deal with it.
******************************************************************
"I'm sure the allman brothers would just love to be playing Dickey's great songs, old and new, but too bad. The brotherhood, the legacy was put on life support when Dickey left. The history of a great band was marred by Dickey's departure."

This is how I feel, and I did not attack anyone individually. And Dickey never tries to play Midnight Rider, or Whipping Post, so how am I so far off the mark. The ABB and Dickey were DIVORCED. The partnership was ended. So, the two parties go their separate ways and they take what they created, pure and simple.
******************************************************************
"Nevertheless, the idea of the brotherhood, is just simply that. People are human and this kind of relationship burnout is to be expected."

Differentiate between IDEALISM and REALISM. The brotherhood was the ideal. The ugliness of the breakups over the years is the reality of what happened in real life. Deal with life. Take a reality check. I know everyone tries, but people change, times change, people lose their ability to work with each other, to live with each other. That is what I was trying to express.

Southernman
before I say to much I have been drinkign for 9 hours but.....
Hey,
It really hurt me when you called me ignorant 19 year old. I love the allman brothers. I live and breath them. I love dickey too. I know the allmans wouldn't be the allmans without dickey. I still remember reading in "Midnight Riders" and listening to the interview about duane saying dickey was the talent and duane was the popular one. :-) Do I beleive it no. But I never saw Duane play so I believe the rumors. I love them both. And they would not be the allman brothers without both of them.

I agree with a lot of your stuff but I never in this post ment to bash dickey I love dickey. I think the allmans deserver some credit they are trying to continue a legend. And for people like me who only got to see dickey once in the allmans. I want to continue to see the allmans forever! It literally makes me cry, when I think about what if that was the last time i ever got to see them. I thank god everytime i see them that they are still playing and I still get to see them every summer. I am 19 I did not get to see them "back in the day"

I love Warren and I love Derek. They aren't Dickey. They aren't Dickey and Duane. But they let people like me get to see the Allman Brothers. People we aren't 39 get to see and feel the magic that is the allmans. common man you have to know what i am saying here......

You are 100% completely right the allmans will NEVER!!!! be the same without Dickey. But isn't that true about Duane, Berry, Chuck.....

Once again I am sorry I have been drinking... but this is my opinion.

PS. Thanks for taking back the 19 year old ignorant comment that really hurt man. I love The Allman Brothers and for ANYONE to say that... it just hurt me.

Both the abb and db are going in differant directions musically. Dickey is more of a western swing jazz blues folk player , Idont think the abb could accomadate all his ideas. There was probaly too many hands in the soup and something had to happen! Warren and Derek are great additons but they play in so many bands that a lot of the music sounds the same .

It's impossible for any fan not to miss Dickey. I mean, the ABB always seperated themselves from every other band, by the sheer virtue of the fact that they could jump from straight blues to hard rock to soft country to jazz fusion to simple pop in no time flat.

Their shows were as much about "Elizabeth Reed" and "Whippin' Post" as they were about "Blue Sky" and "Where It All Begins"...

Now, one whole side of that is gone. It's not just Dickey, but it's that other sensibility that he brought to the band. His lightness. His ability to talk to the crowd. The pure joy he brought night in and night out.

Of course, it's been said that Dickey's departure was due to the problems he cause, but, all us fans knew was what happened on stage, and, on stage, he was the perfect fit.

Now, I'm sure the jams are more dynamic now. You have 2 guitarists who are virtuosos (although playing something that was half-created by Dickey), and the 3 original members playing their arse's off, trying to show that they didn't need Dickey afterall... But, the truth is, he is sorely missed...

When Dickey doesn't yell "How y'all doin?" right after "Statesboro Blues", as they start up "Blue Sky", he's missed.

Gregg can ask how a crowd's doing as well as Dickey could.

I don't this stuff was not 'half-created' by Dickey unless you're talking about the guitar harmonies to his own songs. We've gotten into the habit of really downplaying everybody else's contributions to the band over the last few years.

Btw, you talk about 'the pure joy' and stuff...I seem to recall you saying you haven't heard the band since Dickey left. It's a little unfair to say how they sound when you haven't heard them, isn't it?

Thors1982. As an older fan, I only am looking at this from the fact that I saw the band in an earlier incarnation. I only saw the band twice. I didn't become an allman brothers band "nut" until much later. I was too young to see the band throught most of the seventies. In 1976 I was thirteen years old. In 1979, I was just sixteen years old. In 1980 and 1981, the allman brothers were fading quickly into obscurity. All I knew of the band was what I had heard on the radio. For me the band had gone on throughout their career, and I missed it because I was a young person who had not been going to concerts, an no, my parents did not go to rock concerts, and no one took me to shows. I even missed out on seeing the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. And I only saw Lynyrd Skynyrd after Allen Collins was in a wheelchair, and after Ronnie and Steve were dead. So, I missed Skynyrd as well.

I learned about the bands after the fact from recordings, and yes, also from Midnight Riders. Maybe someday a good book about Lynyrd Skynyrd will be written, but I sincerely doubt that will happen.

And when you talk about seeing an old band like the abb, I understand. I got my feet wet seeing both of the above bands, at REUNION TOURS, Skynyrd in 1987, and the ABB in 1989. Both tours were suppossed to be just that, reunion tours. But, as you can see, there was much more to come.

In the case of the abb, I can say the abb came back strong, brilliant, great. They gave me chills. And you know, Gregg had to leave the 1989 reunion show here in Jax. FL. That kind of memory stays with a person. If it was an allergic reaction to a throat medication, then that is acceptable. But Gregg has missed shows, or shown up so messed up that it would hurt the show. And yes, Dickey has been there and done that as well. The entire band lived that to the hilt.

Anyway, the present band to me is only a vehicle that allows younger people like you a chance to see a legendary band. You all say how great the guys are on guitars. Do you not realize that Dickey's weaknesses also made the band what it was, and what it was not? Ok, so the band was weaker in 73 through 76. Duane and Berry were dead. It was easier to hear what DICKEY WAS NOT. But I think that was the problem, people measuring Dickey for what he was not.

And I myself would have wanted to leave if I was being minimized in a band that I had made great. It was Dickey's band, or he was the main man until Warren showed up. And then Dickey had to endure the "Warren Mania" until he left the band. And once again, it was all about what Dickey WAS NOT on guitar. Nevermind that the man was a brilliant songwriter, a decent singer, and someone who wrote half of the bands songs.

Anyway, I don't care for the way people look at Dickey. I look at him for what he was. Many of you look at Dickey for what he wasn't. No, he cannot play like Warren. Warren cannot also not play as Dickey does. I care more for the abb with Dickey's weaknesses, than I care for the abb without him. The modern band is too hardcore, rather melancholy to me. The shows do not pick up my spirits. Dickey Betts and Great Southern Shows pick up my spirits. The shows are much brighter. I also feel the way you do, but I feel that way about Dickey and his new band. Like many, I have feelings, and I have taken a side. I just have more peace following Dickey, than I do in following Gregg. What is the truth, "GO ASK ALICE, WHEN SHE'S TEN FEET TALL", or go ask Pilate. None of us were there and none of us know. I guess I just did not like the way you expressed your thoughts. Perhaps it was the drinking.

And no one should drink for nine hours straight. Alcohol poisoining kills people all of the time, and especially young people. I got dehydrated myself once from drinking too much the day before. I had to go to the care unit the next day and they put IV's in both of my arms giving me saline solution. That episode really messed me up for a few weeks. I felt pretty bad.

Take all things in moderation, avoid excesses in life. Too much of anything is usually a bad thing.

Oh, and I am quite ignorant about what the present abb is doing. So feel free to educate me, or to tell me so. My attention is on the past for the most part. The one exception is the new Dickey Betts and Great Southern band. That is the newest music I have in my entire cd collection. So, I am an old fart, or a middle aged fart, or if you want to call me an idiot, you can do that to. Tim called me that. And Tim and I traded at least once. I know how he likes the modern lineup, and he says he prefers Jimmy Herring over Warren, if I remember correctly, but being as I am now so old and feeble, the mind sometimes is so hard to access. 10 posts. So why are you hiding behind a second rate username? What's your primary username, punk? I'll show you what an **** can really do. Bring it on idiot. Lynyrd Skynyrd was not a pretender, but then you wouldn't know because you are what, 15 years old? What adversary of mine is this now? You **** s are so thin-skinned. You can't take a little thought with your brand new allman brothers band.

Crybabies like you are the main ones pumping up this new band. Go ahead, hype the new lineup for all you are worth. Sure, the band is still good, but it is not your father's Allman Brothers Band. Gregg saw to that, or was it not Gregg saying "Listen to the **** ing Tapes?" So go listen to the tapes of Dickey's new band. AssH*le,
YOU are the epitome of the word! Insecure little **** s like you that will not put the present band into the proper perspective of a 30 year legacy of the seventies, etc. Insecure **** s like you that will not learn anything from the other great southern bands. Funk off idiot.

And hey, this is not the spirit of the brotherhood, and firing someone by fax isn't either. Pr!ck.

No, I am saying the young and old attack each other on this site because of the differences in perspective.

Damn, playing TAG with Marley all day makes me want to leave my mind alone and just get high.

If ya'll don't quit, I'm gonna start some new skynyrd threads. How about a Randall Hall thread? You know he played for Allen Collins after he was paralyzed. That is, after Allen was paralyzyed. Obviously paralysis does not enhance ones guitar skills.

Or how about a Molly Hatchet thread? I could research the band. Hey, I am from Jax. FL, which is also the birth place of MH. Maybe I owe them a few hundred posts as well. I shall think on this for a while and get back to you. I dunno, maybe this could be a whole new direction, a preoccupation for me. Yeah, Molly Hatchet posts. Yeah, that may be the ticket.

Southernman, I never once bashed your opinion. I infact said I agreed with most of it. I for the 10th time LOVE Dickey. Dickey kept the band popular from 8:40pm when duane died till 1999. He did not keep the band alive, he did so much more than that. He defined what most of us consider the allman brothers. Not only did he do that he defined a lot of what they were before duane died.
But I am not going to go into that cause like I said he did more than we can imagine.

The point is I did not say I disagree. I just think we need to be behind Dickey and the Allmans because they are both great.

And drinking for 9 hours sounds a lot worse than it was. I mean afterall I typed that fairly well. So I wasn't that messed up. But thank you.
