there's a lot of shows there with the * on it. would it be possible to list why each of the shows has the * on it. i understand why on some (like the fillmore shows), but others i don't have a clue. take 3-19-71 for instance. can i go out and buy this? why is it a * show?

anyways i know it'd take a little time to do, but it would really help me out (and probably alot of there ABB traders) as well. plus maybe we'll find out that there are some releases that we've missed

thanks for your help

The worst ones to me are when somebody gets creative with an audio editor and takes parts of different shows and pieces them together to match a setlist for show that doesn't exist. There is a special place in hell for those guys.

Just when you think you have more ABB music then you might be able to listen to in a lifetime, a list likes this pops up and blows you away.

I am with EddieP on this, I will send discs without metered stamps on the return envelope. Thanks for the list Clay, you da man.

Exactly, and turn up the heat while you're at it.

Our "creative" folks edit out all talking between songs etc from, for example, the legit 4/4/70 show and, voila, now it's the 11/19/70 show.

Clay, every one you put an * by, I agree is either a "manufactured" bogus show, or one that is misdated (for example 3/20/71 is many times mislabelled as 3/19/71).

Oh yeah, but you left off the copy of 6/26/71 that I have. All five hours worth. It sometimes sounds like Barry Manilow though.

Hi Steve,

Well, I personally can't give you specifics on why the * are by so many. other than over the years so much stuff has been mislabeled, and to, false dates have been created for no other reason than trade bait and to create a bogus bootleg so that others can profit from.

I do feel very comfortable with the information I have provided. And I only say that due to where the info is coming from. I trust 100% in what people like CaptSkipper, Kirk West, Old Coot and Rowland Archer say reguarding these dates. These guys have been trading music for thrity years and Kirk is the offical ABB archivest. And to thru offical ABB records most if not all of the legit dates have been proven to be correct by band receipts and concert contracts.

Knowing these guys and their dedication to the early years I feel 95% sure that the above info I provided is accurate. Now that's not to say that some of the above dates with an * beside them won't see the light of day, oneday. I sure hope so?

Damn you Clay, now you've got me started on these bozos!!!

One of my favorite all-time "bogus" moments is the Hot 'Lanta that is "on the 5/9/70 Georgia Tech show." The "manufacturer" would have us believe that for some reason the band would play this song in May '70, yet Duane introduces it on an actual Fillmore West show from Jan '71 as a song that they just wrote about the town they came from and "maybe we'll write one about your town sometime." Sure, they're going to play a song and then skip forward eight months before playing it a second time. Yeah, and I got this bridge I'd like to sell ya....

I am serious about that 6/26/71 ABB that I have. If you play it backwards it sounds just like Manilow singing "I am the walrus, goo goo cachoo...."

Whenever I am working on an ABB trade with someone I don't know, my protocol is to check the other person's list against Clay's list. I figure if an early ABB show ain't on Clay's list, it's bogus. Thanks Clay for the post.

You are right Coot. And also I think a good bit of those bogus 1970 shows are either the 4.4.70, 5.2.70, 12.13.70 or 12.31.70, and to, any combo of all to creat one false date.

Clay, I glanced through your list a little too quick. Maybe someone can help out on this. Some people list a '71 Whiskey A Go Go shorter, partial show as 2/1/71 and others as 10/2/71. When I collected years ago it was generally referred to as the earlier date but I believe there are those that can make a case for the October timeframe being the correct one.

Your right Coot. I changed it and also made more sense of the 3.19 or 3.20.71 date.

Clay or Coot or whoever may be able to respond - has their ever been a published source for ABB tape trading? Coming from my background for years as a GD trader, I'm thinking of something similar to Deadbase or the Deadheads Taping Compendium. Anything similar to that for the ABB that offers source info and reviews of the shows in circulation etc?

If there is, I'd love to get a copy. If not, have any of you guys ever considered putting together such a publication? Obviously it would be a huge project and colloboration. But I was just wondering.

I still have to get myself a copy of the ABB discography.

Thanks for your help. Have a good evening

Grabbed my "Vintage ABB" binder when I saw this thread.

Don't have a single * show.

Phew!

May have a couple duplicates though.

Look for "Vintage Freebies" this weekend.

checked my discs and the only bad date I have is the 11-17-70 boston tea party disc.
Does anybody know what show or shows this is really from? Just curious, I'm removing from my list, regardless. Thanks for the great information Clay.
Peace, Ed

I once got "Boston Tea Party show" and it turned out to be part of the 04/04/1970 Ludlow Garage set - and with a bad sound quality.

Big thanks for Clay for this list. From a trader's point of view it's pricless.

Cheers!

thanks for the info here Clay. it's great that you guys are intent on keeping the integrity of the bands' legacy intact. oooh. that's a lot of int's.

I checked my list & found I have a couple of questionable shows. i.e. 03/13/71 [early] & 07/17/71 [early]. both these shows have been added to the database by 'system'. I would have no idea who I got these shows from, but will remove them from my list.

as I have found out recently, [the hard way] it is a good idea to check the shows you receive [specially the older ones] against the set list. just to make sure it is what you think it is. everyone makes mistakes . it also pays to be careful when writing dates on discs... what you wrote as seven I read as nine.

Thanks for your help Clay! And thank you for all you do for the music and for our community here.

If there is any thought of doing some sort of publication, maybe the Deadhead's Taping Compendium would be a good model. There are three volumes, the first of which is 1965-1974. Then there is one from 1975-1985 and 86-95.

With the ABB obviously it would be 1969-1970s, but the Taping Compendium basically reveiws all GD shows in circulation. It provides the source info and lineage. And a description of the various cuts, splices, etc. Some of them show the timings for each track. And when appropriate discuss some of these * abnormalities that you are talking about, like if there are two or three "versions" of a show around (some of which may not be legit etc). And then it provides a written review of the show (highlights, lowlights, personal stuff if the person reviewing actually attended etc). It's a massive undertaking.

Then Deadbase was a little different. That one had some reviews sent in by readers, but really not too many. Instead it focused on reporting the setlists, tape timings, and then it's got all kinds of stats, like how many times they played each song in a year, a list of the songs with the dates that they played each one, lists of people's favorite shows for each year, you know, Venue lists that show for example how many times the GD played each venue that they ever played, (some of them might only be once, others like the Fillmore West or East were alot) along with a description of the location and size of the venue, the kind of stats that Sandman posts sometimes in "Anything Goes".

For the "Gearheads" maybe their could be a list of the instruments and equipment that each band member used at various times.

Whatever. Just trying to throw out some ideas.

Thank you again for all you do. It is deeply appreciated.

One other thought that I had. I've traded for some of these "suspect" shows just hoping that one might pan out (I usually ask identifying questions about them first) and after deducing that they are "fakes" I always inform the person that the show is bogus and shouldn't be traded.

When the show stays on that person's list after I've told them it's bogus, I'm all done with them from there on.
