Who would you say is the most overlooked (underrated) band ever? My vote goes to Free, most people only know “Alright Now” & think Free is a one hit wonder, but all of their records are great. What about the musicianship (Paul Rodgers one of the all time great singer, Paul Kossoff the greatest vibrato ever, Andy Fraser one of the unsung hero of the bass & Simon Kirke a no-frill solid drummer).

Little Feat never seems to get the respect that they deserve.

The Free rock !!!
I bought that 5cd box set a few year's ago, absolutely awesome.

And yes, Paul Rodgers is fantastic. His voice is still perfect. Especially if you
compare it to Robert Plant and Ian Gillan who both kinda lost it.
I saw Paul Rodgers at a small club in belgium (300 attending approx.)
a few years ago and he blew me away.
some of his solo stuff is stongly recommended also!

Also underrated: as guitarist, blues musician and the fantastic human being he was:

RORY GALLAGHER

(i think he even wasn't in the top 100 guitarists poll of rolling stone a few years ago!!!)

Two people that both met similar fates.

Roy Buchannan and Danny Gatton. Probably the two best Telecaster players that ever lived.

Stephane, you are right on the money about Free-that box set of theirs Songs Of Yesterday is incredible, and the Island Remasters are texbook examples of how a label should upgrade a band's back catalog.

How about your buddy Rory Gallagher? Truly one of the all-time great guitar players and he has never gotten his due.

I agree with all the names mentioned above especially Little Feat. Here are a few I would like to add:

Yes
Mountain
Canned Heat
Robin Trower
Kansas
Flying Burrito Brothers

Hey we all seem to think alike on this one. The Free box set is the best ever.My second choice would have been Little Feat (they are not even a one hit wonder in my town (Montréal), nobody knows them). Rory should have been a superstar same with Danny Gatton.

For this moment I'll go back in time and say IMO "Savoy Brown" was underrated. I bought every CD to replace the albums.......now I have to think of later bands.....and YES I agree with "FREE".

I agree 100%.....

I have to try to check out some more Free when I get some time.... do they have any bootlegs going around? 5CD box set is a bit much to "just check them out".....

Well, I've never heard of Flying Burrito Brothers.

One I would probably add to this collection would be:

Traffic

I can't think of many underrated bands off the top of my head.... but Savoy Brown is one of them.

Frogwings
Dusty Sommers
Aqaurium Rescue Unit
Oteil and the peacemakers

You really think they were underrated, they were spinoffs of other bands and did very well for our era.

The Flying Burrito Brothers was one of Gram Parsons' bands...one of the first to blend country and rock-n-roll together.

And, I totally agree with you with Traffic...Hell, I can't beleive I left them off my list.

Yea... they were huge in the UK back in the 60's along with Cream, and other british invasion bands.

I'm trying to think who else might be on this list... Steely Dan!

Mike, The Flying Burrito Brothers INVENTED country rock-there would have been no Eagles, no Poco, etc without them.

It contained mostly ex-Byrds in the beginning, with Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman the most prominent. Later Bernie Leadon, who later formed the Eagles, joined.

They are one of the most influential bands of all time.

Steely Dan started as a studio band and should have remained in the studio as I have heard their shows are boring......don't shoot the messinger. And I personally don't think Traffic was underrated. I'm from the '60's and we supported them immensely. Maybe NOW you don't hear them too much.

Since Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Bros. have already been mentioned, I'll go with the Kinks. IMO, Ray Davies is one of our best songwriters ever!

Steely Dan wasn't really a band-they toured very rarely. More like a collection of crack session players who made great records every so often.
