I've been blown away by seeing Warren Haynes play the ABB Beacon DVD and I'd like to hear more of his stuff (Solo Govt Mule). Could you guys give me an idea of the best album/place to start as I'll probably have to order in?

cheers

The best place to start for Gov't Mule would be "Deepest End" which is a double live CD plus a DVD of a show they put on in New Orleans with some very special guests and contains a lot of the material that they recorded on their two Deep End albums and some some of their earlier stuff. Obviously it's more espensive but it's worth it.

The early Mule is more rough and bluesy (pretty heavy too. Rockin' House from the latest ABB studio release was originally recorded by Gov't Mule on thier self titled album) and then their material gets a little more experimental including after the death of Allen Woody where they recorded two albums with a wealth of well know bassists (Deep End 1 and 2). It's all great music though and the Mule are so consistency good that you won't find a bad track.

As for Warren's solo stuff, "Madness" is pretty much 80/90 AOR and his latest acoustic live release highlights some of the stuff he did with Phil Lesh and includes some Dead covers as well as his own stuff. Very good for chillin' at a picnic.

Hope this helps.

Hippy 69 gots it right...
That deepest end DVD is the 2nd most played dvd at my house, right behind the beacon dvd, simply because i am an abb fan first, and a mule fan 2nd. But talk about some SERIOUS rock and roll...go out and get this thing, NOW. Trust me, you wont be disappointed. Just turn it up LOUD to get the full mule effect.

As for where to start on a mule collection...I always steer folks to the 96 release "live at roseland" cd first. Its the original line up playin, and It rivals (in my opinion) Fillmore East, as one of the greatest live albums out there...Did I just say that? Well, you get the idea. It is some serious heavy power trio music and having seen them live about 10x, I think it captures the "essence of mule". One thing though, like I mentioned above, to get the true spirit of the mule, you gots to turn it to 11. Warren is the MAN.

For studio albums, I would start with Gov't. Mule, and then Dose. But you will need to get them ALL!! Trust me, you'll see........

what he said.

i like Life Before Insanity best right now.

yes, you will need them all - especially Warren Haynes Live at Bonnaroo.

they have also just put out a new CD a few weeks back called "Deja Voodoo" that is very good.

Agree with the first cd. It is fantastic from the first song, then just keeps getting better.

I love the LWAHFMF - 4 cd set. Disc 3 has Sad and Deep, along with Cortez. Randall on sax is outta this world. Marc Ford on guitar during Cortez is awesome. I think Disc 3 may also contain Spanish Moon. What a sweet set of music!

I have to echo some of the previous comments. Although if I had to start somewhere, it wouldn't be the Deepest End. Get the early stuff with Mr. Woody.

As a longtime Mule fan and attendee of over 30 shows pre-post Woody, I would definitely tell any newbie to start out with the magic trio that was Gov't Mule. I have heard nothing like it before, or since. And I would probably start someone out on Live at Roseland, onto Dose, onto the 1st one, then onto LWAHFOF box, which gives you a taste of where the band was heading toward today. The Deep End project was great, but I wouldn't start there. The Deepest End DVD is VERY well done however.
My .02. Have fun.

i happen to be very partial to dose, so definitely get that.

I'd also recommend "with a little help from our friends".....partly because its amazing, and partly because it has a 30 minute cortez the killer on it

Then get life before insanity and deepest end
