I am at my desk and threw into the Cd player a new Vine that I burned. 5-30-93. I got three songs in and realized the songs were slow and drawnout, Dickey could not sing and during his solo's he pushed every note out of Goldie and was muffling the souind. I opted to place in my player a Beacon 03 show instead.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........Now that's better!!!!!

Speaking of Dickey... I got a DBGS show in a trade and it was, well, not very good. The quality of the CD is fine, but the band sounded really flat and worn out. I noticed this mostly on the ABB songs they tried to play...they did much better, and sounded better on the GS songs and on the Dickey "standards" like Blue Sky and Ramblin Man. Dickey made excuses that they had been off all winter and he hoped we would understand (WTF??) He also said they were going to play a lot of "new stuff" (translation: not rehearsed). They sounded like a half assed cover band. I love Dickey and I know he has some serious talent. Whatever is causing him to do so poorly needs to be addressed.

I believe it's called alcoholism. I hope Dickey can somehow come to terms about his disease. I'd like to see him with us on this earth making music for a good while longer.

I got a couple of his shows here and there and I agree that they are just not that good, It definitly has that country sound to the music but they try to hard to give the rock sound. I struggle to listen to it beause it sounds like a worn out bar band, Sorry to Dickey and anyone that doesnot like this post

i wonder what the date of the show was....Dickey's band is sounding great these days so i wonder if it was an older show.

Acute Alchoholism with a side of tone deafness. It's two days past his birthday, so let's do a little Dickey-bashing. I love the guy. One of the all-time guitar gods in my book, but he hasn't really progressed. Hasn't had his "Hittin the Note". At least not yet. I hope he'll get it back, though, I believe that he will.

I've always said he has manic depressive guitar playing. Some nights he's off, some nights he's on. And when he's on- I think no one can hold his jock.

Bold statement, but hell, that's Dickey.

You people - 2002 i saw ABB at Beacon, Dickey & GS at BB king's - no comparison, Dickey and GS were on fire, ABB flat and uninsipered. a lot has been laid at this man's feet - i can attest to his ongoinng brilliance. i've seen Dickey 4x in the last 2 years, each time he was professional, inspired and appeared perfecly sober and lucid. i haven't anything bad to say about the current ABB lineup except that that group is not the band i fell in love with, well my problem. however, if you run your mouthes about Dickey and you are wrong - i'm gonna rock you.

Sounds like he's talking about the DB&GS Instant Live from March. I've got that and I wasn't too impressed either, to tell you the truth. The Little Martha was definitely sloppy.

Criticize the ABB, but if anybody says anything about Dickey, you cop an attitude. Sounds fun.
You'd be hard-pressed to find anybody here who has anything against Dickey, that doesn't mean they have to think he's playing great right now. I don't think that Instant Live show represents the band very well.

Dickey is Dickey thats what makes him one of the alltime greatest guitar players man!! The line up he's got with him now ( I just seen him in Sept ) is fantastic. Say what you want but you can't take his talent away he'll always amaze me when I see him play live. I've travelled from where I live which is 15 minutes away from Niagara Falls Canada to Virginia,Colorado,Albany, etc to see him play never to be let down yet. Ya gotta love Dickey for what he's done!!!

Thank you Marley - I did get a little hot and defensive. You are right to remind me that people have a right to make critical comments - especially about art and music. I guess I felt this thread was kind of mean spirited and I hit the pedal. There have been lackluster recordings made by the various current and former members of ABB - they can and should be held to account for them. I have a lot to say about this band, particularly about the period that led to their most recent reorganization but I don't think it appropriate to do so in this forum. I am a fan of DB and the ABB and also consider this community a positive, happy place to be because of members like yourself.

Everybody has an off day/night once in a while.
An off night with Dickey is still better than a good day at work.

Thank you very much, Billy. You're also right- it's not like there are a lot of ways to interpret "ears bleeding."

I saw Dickey a few months ago in San Francisco, and while his playing was right on, I didn't care much for the Hank Williams, Jr-lookin' keyboard player, who doesn't have that great a voice, and played way too many solos for me. Dan Toler had one good solo all night, as I recall. The rest were all Dickey (no problem with that), and the keyboards. I would have much rather heard more of Dan. Just my opinion. Fire away!

That's the first thing that came to mind, as is usually the case when I hear about Dickey having an off night. I've been hoping he'd get off the sauce for many years now, as I know how destructive it can be - I've been there and survived. Dickey (and Duane) inspired me to pick up the guitar almost 30 years ago, and I have nothing but respect for the man and his talents. I just hope he'll reach out for help some day before it's too late.
