i was just reading about my beloved Boston Red Sox, and I read how Butch and Derek Trucks threw out the first ball. Is that crazy or what? I knew derek was an Atlanta fan, (the hat gave him away) but it just blew me away to read about my beloved RedSox AND my beloved Allman Brothers. what's up with that?

Wow, was this last night??!! Man, wish I'd known (or that it had been on TV). Derek's said before that he's a HUGE baseball fan, likes to go to games on off-nights during tours and stuff. He and Butch -- I just mentioned this in the previous thread -- are related to a former major-leaguer, so maybe it all makes sense.

One of the new Red Sox owners has to be a BIG ABB fan, anyone know who that is? John Henry maybe? That has to be quite a thrill for Butch and Derek. Throwing out the first pitch in Fenway! Damn! Then they watched Pedro toast the Twins. I was just reading in the paper this morning that Butch and Derek are related to Virgil Trucks, a long time pitcher with the Detroit Tigers. Here's a link to his stats if anyone's interested: http://www.baseball-reference.com/t/truckvi01.shtml

Susan sang the National Anthem so it was quite the family affair. Sorry I missed it but I was already on my way to Tweeter for the show. I heard Butch and Derek fired heat right across the plate too! Not an easy feat when 35,000 are watching, I bet they were more nervous than when playing music to a packed house.

Hey guys. I was lucky enough to attend the sox game that day. Susan did a great job on the anthem, and Butch through a high and outside pitch to Doug Mirabelli. Not bad though! Butch departed off the first base side; me, sitting on the 3rd base side decided to try and meet him, which I did. Met up with him on the concourse right behind home plate. I had my Grateful Dead tank top on, which Butch got a big kick out of. "Looks like I wore my wrong shirt today, Butch," I said. Nice guy, shook my hand, and he looked pretty pumped after being on the field.

Virgil Trucks was a pitcher with the Detriot Tigers in the 30's and 40'. He is one of the only major league pitchers to pitch two no-hitters in one season. He was the son of my grandfather's brother. Not sure what that makes his relation to Derek and myself (second cousin, once removed, I believe) but he was recently inducted into Ted William's Hall of Fame and the PR guy with the Red Sox (being a huge ABB fan ) thought it would be nice to have Derek adn I throw out the first pitch the day they celebrated Virgil's induction. Susan grew up near Boston and has sung the national anthem for a Sox game before so they also felt that having her sing would be cool. It was a very nice experience.

And Derek and I are BOTH Atlanta Braves fans. I have been since 1957 and suffered through all the years of them being the worst team in baseball so I'm lovin it these days. I earned it.

What do you think the strike will do to baseball?

I don't think he'll have to worry about that until at least 2006.

Yeah...they're all going to live richly ever after.

Here's CNN's story about it.

By the way, since I forgot to mention it before, Go Braves! Now that the season will be played out, Smoltz can break the single-season save record...
