Bonnie Raitt hands down for me...the woman has paid her dues and she's a bad mama on that slide geetar. She has spent some quality time with Lowell and the blues masters. Great sense of style too. A consummate woman who says what's on her mind..

Glad to have caught one of her shows this year.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe

You may recognize her from the Scorsese Blues series.

If the second pic doesn't come through, just click this (she's playing a Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop):

Memphis Minnie

Interesting contrast between the picture of this blueswoman and the previous of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a rockin' gospel singer. I don't know Memphis Minnie well, but everybody knows Led Zeppelin's version of her "When the Levee Breaks."

Betcha never heard Minnie's version! Amazon page with a 30-second sample:

Ain't no contest. Most of the folks here look for music with more than just licks -- it's got to have magic in it, too.

Donna Hopkins's guitar sings in my heart, and THAT'S magic!

Sister Donna is part of the HTW family -- if you're not familiar with her music, please check her out today!

Ditto on Bonnie Raitt. She conveys feeling - not just technique.

Bonnie Guitar

.

I have no idea what she sounded like, but I bet Bonnie Guitar took her name from the 1954 Joan Crawford movie pictured at right (Sterling Hayden played the title character). Johnny "Guitar" Watson I know--the album A Real Mother for Ya (1977) is a funk classic of sorts (dig the cover: Johnny giving the thumbs-up while being pushed in a gold Cadillac baby carriage by his real mother!). In 1953 he started out as Young Johnny Watson, and I bet he added the "Guitar" part after the movie, too!

. .

I added Guitar Slim because he's my favorite with "Guitar" in his name.

Edie Brickell. She's been practicing and she's really good. (Not so much a lead player however)
