Old Mule or New Mule? Old mule as in Mule with the original Lineup...... I'll take old mule.. I love the new cd and all but it's nothing compared to when Allen was around.

How about you?

OLD OLD OLD!!!

Not even close. After Woody passed some described the "new Mule as "Mule light"...at the time I did not agree, they still rocked, but now I think they are WAY to mellow.

That said, their new songs don't sound that bad in concert. I few weeks ago I posted a "Sorry but as a diehard Mule fan this new album stinks" post...and I still pretty much agree.

NOTHING will ever top the power trio sound of the Mule with Woody. That band could kick it big time.

It could be as good as it was... I'm just not digging the new mule much.. that's why I only look for shows with woody because the New lineup doesn't snag my eye. Warren writes excellent songs, it's like a pizza with the wrong ingriedient though... and the missing ingriedient is Allen

The new Mule is still good but it doesn't compare to the early stuff. Besides the fact Woody was there who was awesome - the music was just more exploratory and unique in the earlier days. THere was nothing like seeing The "real" Mule up close in those small places and watching Warren, Woody and Matt do their thing. The best power trio ever IMO. Their chemistry defied description - you just had to see it and hear it. I would bet 90% of the fans would say the same thing. There was much more improv and off the cuff stuff too back then which I always like...On their really good nights they made Cream sound like a wedding band. The new Mule is basically more straight-ahead rock which is cool too - its just not as improvisational. Woody!

Perhaps this is an unfair judgement, but after hearing the S/T and Deja Voodoo (I also have Deepest End Live, but that's all) I'd have to say new Mule.

I was not thrilled with the new album, but it's growing on me. I've not been able to warm up to Danny Louis. Not that I think the addition of keys was a bad idea, just maybe Danny's not the right fit. I got a couple of shows off the Mule Tracks site and the new stuff does rock. The Nashville show is a particularly good one for Andy Hess, the guy definately has chops. Like Duane, Woodys shoes will never be filled, but I believe the new Mule will grow into it's own identity, much as the Brothers have in recent years. Keep Kickin' guys.

I like both; however, I liked the feel of the old stuff. Mule is targeting a broader range of people now. I think they are trying to attract more women and dead heads. The old stuff was just raw. It sounded great in those old clubs, but for Mule to survive it has to broaden its fan base. Warren does not what to be Gregg's age playing small clubs for a few hundred bucks.

First of all, let me start by saying...I love Gov't Mule! They are one of my favorite bands. I saw them dozens of times with Woody...the 1st time in 1995. Yes it is true, the original Mule was one of the best "power trios" around...if not of all time.

But, they are not a "power trio" anymore. As we all know, they have evolved into an outstanding 4 piece that still packs a punch. I beleive in alot of ways they started evolveing before the passing of Woody. They were already starting to dabble with keyboards and record with "special guests" both studio and live. And the Mule was always notorious with musicians sitting in with them...especially before Allen died.

I think sometimes we are too critical about this subject. And I realize everyone has their own opinions and prefrences...but, it is obvious Warren & Gov't Mule are doing what they love and thats what makes them so good. Be it a 3 peice or a 4 peice band...as long as it is Gov't Mule, I will take it anyway I can get it.

I think that's all very true... I don't think any of these bands are the type to consciously expand their audience and target focus groups by changing their music. The Mule was growing in the years before Woody died, and they'd definitely started playing some more cerebral, moody music. If you ignore the Deep End albums and go straight from Life Before Insanity to Deja Voodoo, there's some consistency for sure. My Separate Reality could've been on LBI for sure.

The new Mule is a good band, the old Mule was a great band. You can't replace Woody.

I like the New Mule and the Old Mule. I think Warrens playing is better these days personally. I also like how he's rearranging some of the old tunes. Keeps it fresh.

I never saw the Mule with Woody. I really wish I had.

It must have happened right when Woody died.

It is not like we get a choice, do we?
Allen is gone.

I miss Captain Al. But the new mule rocks.
That was the evidence presented last week at the
930 club, both nights.

Peace
John

That must have been nice. I just checked out the set lists and the Halloween night looked like a killer. Anyone there?

the 930 club shows with Ron Holloway sitting in, demonstrated that
this band can be very improvisational. Danny, Warren and Ron
were throwing some $hit down. Matt and Andy provided
the vehicle for them to fly in.

I'm sure Scofield picked Andy Hess because of Andy's lack of
improvisational skills.

The new line-up is still growing into what it will be.

I agree with EddieP that this band can do rock-n-roll.
Love the beatles and Zep covers. Definite Zep influence
on the new record.

peace
John

As a fan who has followed the mule since its inception I have to admit sometimes it seems like something is missing. For me the change has come in the last year or two. I enjoyed the first tour back with Dave Schools and the shows with Gregg Rzab, but have yet to really be rocked by the Andy Hess era. These things take time and I have faith that it'll all come full circle soon. The new album has yet to grow on me, maybe with warren's schedule it was just a bit rushed.
