I saw that the ABB played "The Sky is Crying" recently.
Was anyone at this show?
That's one of my favorite old blues tunes, and I'd love to hear the ABB play it.
According to the date base, the band had played this song only once, in 1969, in Charlotte.
I find that hard to believe, that they'd break out something new like that during the last week of a tour.
Anybody know for sure that they haven't played this song more recently?
Thoughts about the ABB and this song?
I think it's great.

They played it at Darien in 2001.

I listened to that version today.

They played it Friday in Dallas, hometown of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Sunday in San Antonio.

My daughter Amy was at the Dallas show.

Lucky Texans.

The database shows only four performances.

Cool.

I was at the San Antonio show last night and they surprised everyone with SIC. Honestly, it was well done, but seemed restrained...nothing at all like SRV would have done. When I heard it and knew what it was I was expecting Derek and Warren to just rip it to shreds, but they gave it a light treatment. Still, it was excellent to hear.

The Darien version was also somewhat restrained.

Let's face it, Stevie made that song special, the way he tore it up.

Hey there Hatchett, check the data base again. I do believe it was the Chicago Theatre....2002 or 2003....Marley or Brofan would prolly know the date right off the tops of their heads! ....It was a great TSIC with Reese Wynans sitting in. I'll see if I can locate my copy of that show this week.

I wasn't at that show, actually, I was back in New York. But the database says is was 8/8/01. Then Darien that summer, and then nothing until Dallas unless you count Warren and Gregg playing it at that Year of the Blues concert.

There's something funky about the ABBbase that makes that 12/31/69 NC show pop up no matter what you search for. And unless you remember to click the 'search setlists' button, it'll be the only thing that appears.

Sandman is correct...It is 8/8/01 at The Chicago Theatre. I was just listening to that show the other day. Both of those Chicago shows that year flat out smoked! 8/8/01 also has a 19 minute Whipping Post that is out of this world. 8/7/01 has LONG versions of "Dreams", "Rockin Horse", "Liz Reed" and yes even a blistering "Jessica" to end the first set...it was easily a 3 hour show.

Hi Libby!

According to the ABB base besides Pinetop, it doesn't look like Reese sat in that night but Larry McCray did on Southbound on 8/8/01. You might be confusing it with another show. Off the top of my head I don't remember a Reese sit-in recently but I could be wrong... I'm sure someone out there may know...

Hope you are well Lib...

Howdy folks. Nope, there was no guest spot by Reese. It was just the 7 band members plus Pinetop on piano for that song. I had a front row seat in front of Gregg that night. One of my favorite concert memories.

Oh and btw, listen to the guitar solos on this one. Derek and Warren go crazy on it. Not tame at all.

Oh man - I have this 8.8.01 show, but won't be back home until Friday to be able to give it a listen.

Makes me wonder why I didn't auotmatically think about it when I saw The Sky is Crying was recently played by the ABB...oh, I know why - too many shows!

That could have been the best back-to-back set of concerts I've ever witnessed. Actually, the 8/7/01 show is even better imo!

...It IS better Lee...In fact a LOT better if you can believe that. As I mentioned before - a GREAT long Jessica and Dreams with the old double-guitar solo...

That's true...

Hey Lee - I thought the best back to back shows (in your opinion) were the 6/19 and 6/20/2002 Chicago Theater shows?

The 6/20 MJ is one of my all time favorites, but what's that got to do with The Sky is Crying?

Nothing....

Did I say that??

I'll have to go listen to them again. I thought I meant the '01 shows. Last year's first night in Chicago was a classic too. And of course, this year's Rosemont show...

I guess they just always bring the "A" game to the Windy City!

Yeah 8/8/01, Chicago, I taped that show... Gregg & Warren switched off vocals on "The Sky is Crying", when they did it later in the year Warren sang it himself. Does anyone know who sang it this year?

In San Antonio, Gregg did the first verse, Warren the second and 3rd verse then back to Gregg to finish it out....sounded great too.

I believe it was the same in Dalls this year, and I thought it sounded great. Didn't sound restrained at all to me.
