Ok, please dont crucify the new guy, but Im curious to see what you really long time fans think of the ABB doing Blue Sky during this tour. I was under the impression that Dickey didnt want the ABB to do "his songs" and he wouldnt do "their songs" like Midnight Rider etc.

I saw the ABB doing Blue Sky as maybe time having healed some of the wound?

And for the record, I love both Dickey and Derek equally..I believe that both incarnations of the band were phenomenal. I would not want Dickey to come back if Derek had to go.

I realize I am speculating WILDLY here, but why are the ABB doing one of Dickeys signature songs if it werent for time healing some of the bad blood?

Squatch

If I were you I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, or jump to conclusions. I was surprised to hear "Blue Sky" at the Fox. Though they played it well, I'm still not too sure how I feel about them doing the tune. I'm sure that some sort of amicable arrangement has been made between the current line-up and Mr. Betts for them to do his tunes.

Dickey back in the ABB? There's been a whole lot of strange history in this band. 'Tain't over yet.

Not a bad question Squatch, but I don't think it means Dickey's coming back.
They've been playing Revival, No One To Run With, Liz Reed, Southbound all along, all of which were all written by Dickey.
IMO, Blue Sky and Ramblin Man are more like signature songs for Dickey and I certainly never thought they'd play Blue Sky. AND, I never would've believed I'd like Gregg singing it, but I do!
The way things look right now, I don't think Dickey's coming back, but you know the saying...never say never.

The XM radio broadcast of the current lineup playing "Eat A Peach" in its entirety is what I have heard the reason is for them playing "Blue Sky" & "Les Brers". There is an issue of pride between Dickey & the Allman Brothers too (it seems, I say this in speculation). There are some very riled responses about this issue over in Dickey's forum.

I say enjoy it while they're doing it. They'll make for much sought-after shows in the future.

Well, I was hoping that there might be some good news.. :-)

While I realize that Blue Sky is one of Dickeys signature songs, Dickey didnt make it a big hit and a fan favorite by himself. That said, I think that the Brothers have every right in the world to sing it since they have contributed to its existence, much as I think Dickey has every right to do ABB songs since he was a huge part of their overall success too. It saddens me to think that this spectacular group, created in the image that music transcends everyone and everything can be somewhat petty when it comes to who plays what, when.

I guess its hard for me to put it all into words. Im not a musician and I have no clue how it would feel to have one of your creations being done by someone else.

And I want to reiterate that I dont know what this all means..Im hoping its just an amicable agreement to play some songs. Hearing Blue Sky last night was simply great and Im glad I was a part of that event. It was my first ABB show to top it all off.

The problem with this theory is they have done it since the XM show was recorded
(a few days before the Nissan show)

I think as long as the fan response is good they will do it.

Is ramblin' man next?

As far as this being a sign that Dickey is rejoining the line-up?

That is a bit of hopeful imagination.

Peace
John

I think they did it because alot of people wanted to hear it . Since they had done it and les brers for the XM broadcast, why not do it at a regular show and make those who wanted to hear it happy? I can live without it but it was a surprise I enjoyed at the Fox and it did make alot of people happy that night. Also theres no harm in expanding the repitoire.

Some of us cornered Butch in the elevator after that Fox show...and he did tell us that the ABB doing the XM EAP thing was the prime reason for doing Blue Sky.

i kinda got the impression that it would NOT be a regular part of the songlist, but I guess I was wrong.

Warren and Derek have teased Blue Sky numerous times in the last two years (after drums in Mountain Jam last year) and Franklin's Tower allows for solos that allow Derek and warren to ape lines from Blue Sky. The XM radio was probably what propelled the playing of Blue Sky, but I would posit that Derek and Warren wanted to play it.

I don't see Rmblin Man coming back - too country for this band and doesn't allow Warren and Derek to open it up like Blue Sky. I will say this being at the Fox that night and hearing the intro to Blue Sky and subsequent roar was something and then Gregg handling vocals - quite a moment.

I love the current ABB but Blue Sky w/o Mr. Betts is like red beans w/o rice as far as I'm concerned.

I want to add, just for the record, that it is legal for any performer to perform a song once it has been recorded, so despite anyone’s opinion about whether or not the ABB “should” perform “Blue Sky”, they can play whatever they want. And no “agreement” between any parties needs to be made. Personally, I’m excited they’re doing it. As far as this situation goes I wouldn’t have any objections to Dickey performing “Midnight Rider” or any other song if he so pleased.
I look at it the same way as any other song. Should the ABB perform “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”? Well, sure, if they do it well. (Which, in my opinion, they do.) I’ll give anything a chance. Really music is here to make us happy…

Agreed--I was there, and I've listened to that version a dozen times since. It's not Gregg's voice on the tune that I see as my main issue, but the lack of Dickey's licks. It just didn't sound the same.

I agree with the XM Radio theory - the band rehearsed and played the song on 9/25 at the Fox, and recorded the show for XM a couple of days later. Why they specifically decided to keep it I don't know, but the fan reaction at the Fox that night was huge, so that may have had something to do with it.

This is probably my all time favorite ABB song. Especially when Dickey and Warren were tearing it up in the early 90's. I'm glad they brought it back. Good music is good music in the hands of the right musicians.

Okay guys I guess its time for the vets to let the newbies in on a little secret that we've been keeping from them all this time.........

Yes its true, Dickey is coming back - I believe its all set for next Wednesday. Derek's gone and Great Southern are history as well.
Mike Lawler is back on synthesiser and there will be 4 drummers. There you have it...
Now that its no longer a rumor - the "Dickey's Back" tour starts December 1st. They will open with Ramblin Man... ...and close with Ramblin Man as well...Molly Hatchett will open all the shows.

...Sorry couldn't resist.

Okay, now that I had my fun, the main reason they played Blue Sky at The Fox was a warm up was for the XM radio performance of "Eat A Peach" which Jim B mentioned...They probably performed it a couple of more times because its one of the few songs the Skynyrd fans would recognize when they played it live during these terrible double-bills with LS. Its only a guess on my part but I bet Blue Sky will be dropped next year or at least not performed regularly....of course I could be wrong but I don't think so....

Peace

I think they're over the whole Dickey thing and will keep Blue Sky in the repertoire just to show it. It's a great song. If they do put it back in the can, I can say that I'm real glad to have seen it performed at The Fox.

Hearing that Gregg sung "Blue Sky" makes me want to puke. He should pick a couple of songs from Allman And Woman instead.

I've heard 2 Instant Live shows with Blue Sky(Thank you Betty) and loved both of them! I love hearing Gregg sing the song and it's obvious that the band was enjoying playing it. As far as I'm concerned, I hope it still gets played next year.

Geez, thats a little strong don't you think?

Also, don't believe ANYTHING you read on The Philzone. The rumors on that site are hardly ever true...trust me!
Someone on that site is also saying Jimmy Herring is having a baby with Jill Lesh (Phil's wife) so please take that stupid Warren rumor with a grain of salt...
