Did Gregg really shoot himself in the foot to avoid the draft?? Just wondering if it is true or an urban legend

He's told the story a bunch of times. If it's not true, he came up with it himself. It's been in some articles, and you can read it in Midnight Riders. Gregg also told this story on TV once, years back, on a show called Inside Tracks. Graham Nash was the host, I think it was on VH-1.

He admitted he did shoot himself in the foot, he says it was accidental, others claim it was deliberate. You have to decide if you believe him. I believe him.

Where did he say it was accidental? If he did, it was kind of pointless since he's said it was on purpose other times.

In them old interviews, waaaaay back. I have never heard him say it was on purpose. He is not masochistic at all.

Then you haven't read Midnight Riders. Which doesn't surprise me, since it's not written by the Guardian.

It has nothing to do with masochism. He was trying to avoid being drafted. Reading the first post here would have made that clear.

Gina,
Marley & O.T.F. are correct, he told the story on
inside track with Graham Nash. He said he was lucky that
he didn't do too much damage to his foot. He said the
bullet went between (2) bones in the foot that are like a
V. He also said that went he went to the hospital, he had
left the shoe on which had a target painted on it.
The blood had dried & the doctor just rip the shoe off.
Also he said he did this to avoid the draft. He also told how
Duane got out of the draft. Sorry if that is so long.

There's some relashionship between guns and musicians!
The fantastic Terry Kath had a great guns collection, but he shooted at his head!

In that interview with Graham Nash he said he did it on purpose, even though he was pretty drunk when he did it.

I was told Duane shot himself in the foot, but I might be wrong. So how did Duane actually do it?

I've seen different stories... Scott Freeman in Midnight Riders says that Duane was able to avoid the draft because his father was dead. Somewhere else I read that that wasn't true and he made the draft board think he was crazy.

My all-time personal favorite is Jim Morrison walking into the draft board and announcing that he was a Communist, a drug abuser, and a homosexual, and if they drafted him they would be the sorriest army on the face of the Earth. They decided to let him go

Gina, shooting yourself in the foot in order to avoid other people shooting you in the head isn't masochistic.

The story in Midnight Riders said they had a foot-shooting party and got Gregg pretty drunk and drew a target on his foot. Then they called an ambulence but the shot didn't go off until the ambulence was already outside the house. Pretty funny if it's true.

Yes, now i remember. What i heard was that Duane drank the whole week before he was supposed to go in for the draft sign-ups. He also wore a pink suit or something and they thought he was either gay or crazy...something of that nature. Way to go man

Wow. I wonder if the Duane story at the draft board is where they got the idea for a scene in the movie Big Wednesday where Gary Busey and Jan Michael Vincent go to draft induction dressed as bums, nazis and one guy dresses like a girl. Busey starts combing his hair with a fish. It's hysterical. Sounds just like what Duane did.

here's a thought. My brother has an older friend he works with who is a pretty good musician. He told my brother that in the mid and early 60's , if you had a decent garage band you had a good chance at getting signed since there really weren't too many bands yet. Anyway, they were on the verge and the lead singer and guitarist in the band got drafted and killed his first week in Vietnam. I'm only 31 so I don't really want to commenet on a time and place I wasn't around for and I really don't think draft dodging is something to be proud of when other guys your age are going but I guess it was a different time and just exactly what did those 58,000 guys die for ? Imagine if there was no Allman Bros due to the scenario above. I guess it's a topic for a whole different thread.

I remember Jimmy Hall telling a story about avoiding the draft. I don't remember whether it was him or someone else from Wet Willie, however one of them went for a physical and beforehand had spread peanut butter in their underwear to give the Doctor's the impression that they could not hold their bowels.

Peanut butter in the shorts would have been less painful than a bullet in the foot, but those were desperate times.

In the same interview with Graham Nash. Gregg says that when
Duane went before the draft board. He wore girl underwear, the board
was like your not gay get in line. When it came to to take the oath,
Duane refused to raise his hand & take it. They told him to go home,
& expect the mp's to come & get him in the morning. Gregg said that
some how his card got lost & they never came for him.

Adapted from The Stupid Crook Book by Leland Gregory, 2002

The Three Stooges

It was a plan intended to make them all millionaires--a great con, they thought; a clever scam, they giggled; a dumb idea, actually. Three inmates at New York’s Rikers Island Prison worked in tandem to hatch a plot to smuggle a gun inside the prison walls. One of the inmates had a day job and was able to successfully bring the loaded weapon onto the prison grounds and into his cell.

Were they planning on breaking out? Nope. Here’s the plot: One of the inmates would take the gun the other inmate brought in sand shoot the third inmate in the leg. The wounded inmate would then sue the prison for “negligence” in allowing a gun to be smuggled into the prison in the first place. They would then, as part of their settlement agreement, all be released from prison and collect “millions” in damages.

Did it work? Part of it did--the part where one inmate shoots another in the leg. But the lawsuit never made it to trial, and all three men are still behind bars.
