From Jambands.com:

ABB To Recreate Eat A Peach

XM Satellite Radio has announced the inception of a new monthly series entitled, "Then...Again...Live!" Over the coming months artists will reinterpret classic albums live in front of studio audiences. The show will debut on September 19 with Cheap Trick and Live at Budokan. Other participants include Lynyrd Skynyrd- Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd (October 17) and the Allman Brothers Band- Eat a Peach (December 19).

I guess this is the extra, private invitation, studio show the band played while in Chicago. I wonder who sang Blue Sky? Maybe Warren or Oteil? I take it they played the tune in its original key. Sure would love to hear a Les Bres with Warren and Derek, or did just one play on it like the original. I wonder if they tried to do a note by note recreatation of the original or were the solos just improvised as usual. I would imagine the later with attempts to stay true to the original. I wonder how everybody who doesn't have XM radio, including myself will get a chance to hear it. I have questions does anybody have answers? Maybe JNB or were you sworn to secercy?

Take care,

Ryan

I posted this on 9/9/2004 at 14:51 @ Whipping Post

Just found out that XM radio on December 19th is going to recreate the Allman Brothers Eat a Peach. They are going to do this by, (from there site www.xmradio.com)

Imagine taking one of the most classic albums of all time, and asking the original artist to reinterpret it live in sequence, before an audience of fans from today's vantage point, and with the benefit of 21st century technology. XM dreamed it and did it!

December 19 @ 8pm xm live Channel 200

In that previous thread, it was plausibly speculated that the Allman Brothers Band would most likely not be doing a special, one-off concert of all of Eat a Peach. Rather, the radio station would take cuts from various concerts and string them together in Eat a Peach order.

I had said that, Peter, just guessing more than anything. But now I wonder if they won't be playing a full set of Eat a Peach music...sounds like they will be...I'd love to hear this baby either way....

I wish I knew more too...I've e-mailed the folks at XM a couple of times asking about when and where this will be performed.
So far, all I've received back is their auto-reply message saying something to the effect that I'm important and that they will get back to me within 24 hours...but then...nothing....

So? Do we know for sure if this will be recorded on 12/19 or if it has already been recorded?

...and Benj, you're important to us!

If this is true - its really going to be something! I can't wait to get more info or some kind of confirmation. I'm just surprised if this is indeed true there hasn't been some type of band announcement. I guess its a surprise....

Not sure why they would want it to be a surprise, though.

It's like, hey. Let's play a historical show, but let's not tell anyone....

Sssssshhhh.....don't tell anyone that we're playing a concert...wouldn't want anyone to hear us.....

geesh....

Anybody know if Warren is doing the Christmas Jam this year and the date? Could there be a tie in?

John and Ryan, pardon my earlier skepticism, but it certainly does say that :

" Then . . . Again . . . Live!
Classic albums performed by the original artists in XM's own Performance Theatre."

Next will be Cheap Trick doing Live at Budokan on September 19. Maybe somebody'll hear that and report for us.

Okay, well, while the debate and arguments rage, what's this about a private invitation studio show the band played while in Chicago? I hadn't heard anything about that.

Why would they lie?

Does anyone really think Cheap Trick is just gonna spin the live at Budokan disc?

It's interesting that they're doing this. I love the current lineup and want them around for the long haul. for this project though, it would be a great first move, to extend the olive branch and bring Dickey in. Can you imagine a monster of a blue Sky, with Dickey, Derek & Warren all soloing? Too much to ask for, I guess and maybe, according to some reports, this has already been taped? Not trying to stir up a controversy. Personally, it's great having two bands to see, four if you factor in Mule & DTB. Throw a GAB show in there also, maybe some ARU, PLQ, O&TPM, Frogwings.................................................................. ........................................................................... ......

Eat a Peach was a record that set a complete new standard. It os a true classic, bar none. To attempt to reproduce it would be akin to someone other than the Who doing Tommy.

In both cases the first one is the real deal, anything else is just psudo. For one, Duane and Berry long, long gone, and Dickey is no longer with the band and he don't wanna come back and they don't want him back. HOW could Eat A Peach be done without Duane, Berry, and Dickey?

Eat A Peach was a done deal way down the pike. The original band was the REAL McCOY.

what's next? Someone want to re-write the Bible?

Eat A Peach was cast in stone 32 years ago.

To attempt to re-create it without all of the original players would be a sacralige.

Besides, think about it. What would Duane say? I'd wager he'd holler

"That was then, this is now! this ain't no nostalgic trip man!"

Oh, they have their purposes, John.

Just kidding! I'm not saying we need a report as proof positive. I'm mostly wondering how it'll sound and what the "XM's own Performance Theatre" is. The other page called it "live in front of studio audiences." Maybe it's a small club we might have heard of, and the audience is XM staff and 450 of their friends. Maybe it's wherever Soundstage is filmed, and we'll see it on TV later! Yeah, maybe XM has yet to choose one lucky Peach-head as winner, convert his house to a "Performance Theatre" or "studio," and--hey, I know somebody who lives in a studio apartment, so the XM people wouldn't have to convert anything! (Sheep, now I'm dreaming like you! What are they going to do about those Dickey songs, though?)

Great. So, next, will there be cuts and other edits between songs (maybe even 2nd or 3rd takes?), or will the band's set be heard in its entirety as the musicians take their places, plow through song after song, take their bows, and split? What if they're really getting into it--are they going to obey an XM producer who runs up onstage, frantically signaling them to cut "Mountain Jam" short? (Tell all XM personnel beforehand to take caution around ABB security.) Finally, encores not allowed, right? Go ahead, and call it the Eat a Peach Deluxe Edition.

They already play most of the songs on the album live, and at some point they've played all of them. Why is it different if this one time, they play them in order? This is improvisational music, it's not set in stone. The tracks on the album are just one performance of the songs.

quote:
what's next? Someone want to re-write the Bible?

That's happened plenty of times.

quote:

Maybe I shouldn't say this, but who cares? The guys can make their own decisions in the here and now.

This is definitely a nostalgia thing. But that's music today, I guess- nostalgia is a big business, there are a lot of older bands around and it's part of what they deal with. It's where part of the ABB audience comes from, and I guess they don't mind dealing with it sometimes.

This a GREAT idea! It will be fantastic.

They do already perform nearly all of it and if you haven't heard Instant Live versions of this line up doing those songs then you are in for a real treat.

Not many bands could go do this with ANY of their albums. It is a neat idea and to turn down the offer would not have made sense. No band is more capeable of doing a project like this than the ABB.
