DMB Sued for Dumping
Band in trouble for allegedly dropping waste into Chicago River
The state of Illinois sued the Dave Matthews Band on Tuesday for allegedly
dumping up to 800 pounds of human waste from its tour bus into the Chicago
River and hitting a passing boat filled with tourists. The suit cites the
band and its driver for violating water pollution and public nuisance laws,
and seeks $70,000 in damages.
The state alleges that on August 8th en route to the band's downtown hotel,
the driver emptied the bus' septic tank while crossing the Kinzie Street
Bridge. More than 100 passengers on an architecture tour boat were
doused with human waste, though the attorney general's office said no one
was seriously injured.
"This incident may be unique," said Attorney General Lisa Madigan, "but
that does not lessen the environmental or public health risks posed by the
release of at least 800 pounds of liquid human waste into a busy waterway
and onto a crowded tour boat."
A statement from the band rebuffs the suit's accusations. "Our driver has
stated that he was not involved in this incident," it reads. However, DMB
go on to pledge to "continue to be cooperative in this investigation."

drop through to the water. What an a$$hole. ____________________

How could anyone know there was 800 pounds of waste? The whole story sounds
strange to me but my thinking was along TopDroog's lines. It seems to me a

I happen to like the DMB, but let's not beat around the bush
.
The only person who should be responsible is the driver who dumped the
S**t!
I'm sure that 800 puonds includes the water (blue s**t in porta-johns). If
haven't done too many substances, AND memory is serving me correctly....
a pound of water should weigh what?? maybe 8 lbs (correct me if I'm
wrong)
100 gallons of water isn't really all that musch when your talking about
filling the bottom of that kind of Sh**er.
Overall, yea - what an a**hole |

Linnie,
is that on purpose?! Shame! quote: The state alleges that on August 8th en
route to the band's downtown hotel, the driver emptied the bus' septic tank
while crossing the Kinzie Street Bridge.

Here's the view on the Kinzie Street Bridge, coming east across the North
Branch of the Chicago River, like 1/4 mile north of where it and the South
Branch and the Main Stem of the Chicago River come together at Wolf Point.
The angle we have of the westbound lane better indicates the roadbed
grating, perfect for dumping on architecture buffs who paid $20 for a boat
ride up the river and being told by their guide:
"The North Branch of the Chicago River, far from being the dumping ground
for everything from the toxic metallic wastes of steel mills and the
noxious organic effluent of tanneries, as it was in days long past, has
been experiencing a rebound, its increasingly clean water making it a home
once again for many species of freshwater fish, ducks, such as the mallards
you can see over by the riverbank to our left, and even beavers around Wolf
Point.
"Here we are coming up on the Kinzie Street Bridge. If you look to our
right, that piling was the site of the infamous Chicago Flood of 1992, when
repair work here collapsed the ceiling of a small freight tunnel beneath
the river, and the water flooded throughout the system, which laces the
entire downtown area, and shut down many buildings. Sealing the breach was
first attempted by dumping mattress down there to plug the leak, which was
finally brought under control by tons of cement.
"And now, if you'll look up at the bridge itself, it is this basic bascule
design with counterweights that has made Chicago truly a city of bridges,
world renowned for their elegant beauty
and--AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH!" ____________________

Well, he did say, "Correct me if I'm wrong."
But a gallon does weigh 8.34 pounds.

their own caterers and they eat some weird stuff. I bet the shelter that I
took the leftovers to probably tossed out most of it as they didn't know

800 pounds? That is a lot. I haven't toured in several years, so maybe the
holding tanks are a lot bigger now. Used to be the tanks held about 35-40
gallons. (That makes the tank the size of a regular trash can, which is a
lot of space on a bus) My touring friends tell me that the old rule still
applies, NO #2 on the bus, ever. But, the "blue stuff" is very toxic and
contains, among other chemicals, caustic soda (lye). Also, the dye in the
chemical is pretty much permanent, so those folks will be easy to spot for
a few days.
I live in Nashville, where custom coaches are everywhere (100's of them).
So I've seen this scenerio before. The driver will claim accident or
malfunction, and a lot of places will buy that excuse. But, buses are
designed so that it can't happen accidentally and a malfunction will only
cause the tanks to be unable to be dumped. So, yeah the driver's a jerk who
did it on purpose. Hope the city persues it all the way.
Back in June, I worked an event in Nashville where a driver did the same
thing in the stadium parking lot. First he claimed the tank malfunctioned,
so the policeman explained to the driver how the toilet system on a bus
works. Somewhat surprised, the driver asked the cop how he knew about bus
toilets and the cop showed him his CDL. Seems the cop is a coach driver for
a country act from time to time. Anyway, it cost the leasing company
between 12k-15k to have an environmental clean-up crew come out at 1am to
spread 5-6 dump truck loads of sand, scoop it back up and haul it away.
Then they neutralized the area and did a complete wash down of the area. It
took until sun up to finish. Police would not allow the bus to leave until
the job was done, or they would be forced to impound the bus as evidence
until a court hearing. My bet is that if the driver still has a job, he
won't be doing that again. |
