I caught most of the 2 hour A & E biography of Bill Graham tonight. Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe were all part of it. It was pretty interesting. I did not know that Bill died in a helicopter crash, or that he was Jewish and had fled Europe as a child to escape the Nazis. Bill was raised here in the US, but they also said Bill never was officially adopted as he had always hoped his parents might have escaped the Nazis. The biography claims Bill's mother died on the way to a concentration camp. I did not catch the part about his father or what happened to him. In the US Bill finally found two of his sisters. Bill ran the Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Winteland which he closed in 1978 , and had The Shoreline Ampitheater built just to his specs. I just thought I would pass this on. I have seen a lot of great musical biographies lately. The other night they showed one on Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I simply love to watch that kind of stuff.

I caught the Brian Wilson biography the other night too. It really is amazing that Brian is the last living Wilson brother. I've been a huge Beach Boys fan for years. Talk about a soap opera, makes the ABB story look tame in comparison.

FFisher, there is vintage abb video of the abb at the Fillmore east. I think the date is 9/23/70. The set is about 35 minutes, and about 6 songs. I have the video myself. It is some great vintage video. I cannot copy it or look at it right now because I do not have a vcr. If you contact Clay in the trades forum I bet he has a copy that he would be willing to make for you. As they say, "Clay is the man!" He b & p's for everybody. I thought that the Fillmore East closed prior to that date . . . Isn't it generally accepted that 6/26 and 6/27/71 were the last shows there by the ABB, as well as anybody else? Maybe I'm confused.

Also, I think Clay is taking a break. Let's let him enjoy his vacation. He'll come back when he's ready.[Edited on 7/16/2002 by TopDroog]

The date of the Filmore video is 9/23/70.

The Biography of Bill Graham was excellent! Was cool to see recent interviews with Gregg, Butch, and Jaimoe. Gregg looked great and spoke as clearly and articulately as he ever has in an interview. If you missed it I would definitely try to catch the re-run. The section about the Allman Bros. is about 1 hr. into the show and last for about 5 minutes, with Dreams playing in the background throughout. Whipping Post is used as background music later in the program.

Whoops, yes, I had the date wrong. Also, I think the footage of Gregg is from the early 90's. Gregg does not look that good at all now. Gregg has lost most of the pretty boy looks he had in that interview. That was always one of Gregg's biggest aces in the hole, that he was at times a handsome guy. The footage of Jaimoe and Butch is newer I feel sure as they both look pretty old. The guys from Jefferson Airplane also looked older than when they did the Behind the Music, or was it a Legends show? But yeah, Gregg looked great, clean sober, but it was early nineties for sure. Gregg has aged a lot since that footage. Just compare video or film footage.

SouthernMan I am willing to bet the farm, that the footage of Gregg is recent, as in within the last year or two. The Biography of Bill Graham is brand new, which I would think that it was produced within the last year, and judging by the questions Gregg, Butch, and Jaimoe answered they were specifically interviewed for this piece. I have plenty of video of the Allmans through the years and although Gregg looks older now then he did 10 years ago, he does not look as worn out and run down as he did back then. For this reason I believe the interview was recent as Gregg looked refreshed and clear headed. I'll see if Lana knows when the interview was given, just out of curiousity.

Take care,

Ryan

I've just got to say that I find it hard to believe that the footage of Gregg Allman there in the A & E Bill Graham biography is recent. I mean, I have seen the photos and all of Gregg in the last few years. The photo on the website has Gregg's hair being shorter. Somebody check out the A & E Biography of Bill Graham and tell me that the footage of Gregg in the yellow sweater is old footage. Jaimoe and Butch looked old, but Gregg looked youthful, the way he did in 92 and 93. I know Gregg lost weight, and obviously he colors his hair, but he did not look older as did Butch and Jaimoe. I am just saying there is like a crusade on this website to showcase Gregg as fit and sober, on the wagon. But that can't turn back the clock of age 10 years. I don't know, maybe they caught Gregg at a good time. If that is recent footage of Gregg, he is looking very good for an aging rock star. Peace.

I think you are paranoid.

A crusade to make him look good? I'm glad I'm not on the "wagon", as I have better things to do.

He did lose weight. Perhaps he has let go of the extracurricular activities such as... oh, I don't know.... drugs??

Amazing what that can do for people. I have even seen it amongst people I know. Highly recommended.

The picture up there for this site (I assume that's the one you mean) is about a year old; it's a colored version of the publicity shot for the Summer 2001 Tour. People do get haircuts, you know.
This does seem pretty paranoid. A crusade? Who do you think has a better idea about this than Lana- she can actually ask the band members themselves!
I guess next we'll hear that the moon landing was shot in somebody's garage...

You know what I think it is, it's all about making Dickey Betts look old.

It's gotta be a conspiracy. Gregg can't still be that pretty, can he?

Dickey IS old. He's almost 60 (if not he may already be), just like the rest of them.

Maybe the site will have a cover spread of Dickey, Butch, & Jaimoe so they don't get upset that Gregg is looking "pretty". Get them a makeover. You know, a ABB swimsuit issue of sorts perhaps?

Why is this even a issue? Like I said, PARANOID.

I think I can settle this. What happened was, immediately prior to the interview, I gave Gregg a nice healthy glass of "youth serum" which is actually Carnation Instant Breakfast. It had a placebo effect, making Gregg feel and appear younger. Secretly, Ryan Belair, Finsky, Marley, and I have been slipping arsenic into Dickey's backstage cocktails for a similar reason. Soon he will shrivel up and die, while Gregg's voice and vigor should be quickly approaching 1971 era quality. This is all a part of Cliff n' Tina's plans for world domination. I hope to be treasurer of the new world order in which Dickey plays no part and no one knows who Lynyrd Skynyrd is. Or, at the very least, assistant treasurer.

Dickey's going on 59 (December 12), and he's lived enough to be 100.
I think he looks alright.
