I haven't listened to Frogwings in years it seemed, so I took Croakin' at Toads to work today. What a great album. Kickin' Bach and Eddie's Boyfriend have some serious jamming...the Pledge of Allegiance in Eddie's is something, for sure...

The only problem is I've got the Hurdy Gurdy song running through my brain all afternoon....can't get rid of it either...uggg....

I hope you didn't just give it to me.

I haven't heard this one in years either, but any album that gets Jimmy and Derek together is gonna have some fireworks.

Love 'em in butter with a little paprika, mmmmmm.

No wait, that's frog legs. Sorry!

And Sandman, I hope you got rid of your barking treefrogs!

They can be pesky, persistent little devils.

Great band, always wished they would do that again. I was able to catch them at the Wetlands. That Croakin' at Toads is great. I like when John Popper tells the audience to take care of their waiters/waitresses because they can piss in your drink.

Big fan of Pattern.

Guitar Player raved about Jimmy Herring in its review of the record.

I agree.

Peace

Frogwings should do a late winter/spring reunion tour with Karl Denson instead of John Popper.

Frogwings was my first introduction to Jimmy Herring. Watching Jimmy, Derek and Otiel lock in was a precursor of things to come in 2000. Still my favorite incarnation of the Brothers, other than the original.

Yeah the Frogwings record is great. Jimmy, Derek, and Oteil are always pleasure to listen to, particularly during some of the tunes that stretch out and allow those three to communicate ideas between one another. Man I would love a jazz record with Oteil on bass, Derek on lead and slide, Jimmy on lead, Kofi on keyboards and flute, and Jeff Sipe on drums. With maybe Wayne Shorter or Greg Osby on saxes for wishful thinking. I would be happy for that lineup to just to an album jazz tunes by their favorite artists. That would be a great listen.

You're on to something there pharoah!!!

I need to pick up Croakin' as well, I have a few mp3s though. I always find it strange that Edwin was a singer in the band originally, great voice but seems kinda out of place, though I do like his appearance with dTb on the Wintertime Blues album.

They did a few tunes together on the original Peacemakers record that was recorded in '97, but it was never released. Due to some really shiitey things, Oteil had to re-record the record (what became "Love of a Lifetime") and Jimmy, Sipe and Derek were unavailable. But there are tapes of the original recording floating around.

I too thought it'd be a weird mix, but McCain actually fit the band better than Popper ever did. The tunes DTB, Jimmy & Edwin did on Wintertime Blues were the Frogwings arrangements. The "Eddie" in "Eddie's Got a Boyfriend" is Edwin McCain. The "boyfriend" is RCA, who wouldn't allow Edwin to record with the band, which prompted them to get Popper so they could put out a record. They called that particular song "Cut Mullet" back when Edwin was in the band. Now that Edwin is on an indie label, I say get Edwin back and do a mini-tour. The tunes were much better with Edwin. Popper really masacred some of them when he re-wrote the lyrics.

I concur about the Edwin/Popper debate. W/ Popper, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. I like having Derek and Jimmy take the lion's share of the solos, and Popper's harmonica takes up too much space IMO. I saw them back in Gainesville in 1997 w/ Edwin, and I think he's a much better fit--kinda like Mike Mattison w/ DTB--he's got a phenomenal voice, and knows when to get out of the way and let the guys playing the instruments do their thing.

For the most part, I dig Popper...but, he is definitely "in your face" most of the time. Don't get me wrong, he is a tremendous talent & I consider a fan of Blues Traveler...but, those rapid fire high notes blasting away in your ears can get annoying at times.

I caught Frogwings with The Popper lineup at the very small Wetlands in New York City. I thought the show totally smoked! Popper has worn on me a bit since that time but that is a band that certainly could have been a TOP notch band on the Jam scene with just a little more time. When you think of how many bands are represented in that lineup its really astounding...ABB, Jazz Is Dead, The Dead, DTB, Blues Traveler, Oteil and The Peacemakers and on and on...Listening to Derek side by side with Jimmy in that context was a sight to behold...talk about chemistry! I would like to see that lineup with Mike Mattison on vocals instead of Popper...Yeah thats the ticket!

It should come as no surprise that I agree completely with Eddie on this....that would be quite a lineup....

I'd rather see Chris Robinson or Karl Denson on vocals and sax.
