|Read This First: This is a massive undertaking and also thanks again to Merlin for his lead and incredible work and WharfRat for spreading this Grateful Dead music to members on this forum...vintage PigPen. Please send the proper number of discs for the shows, stamps, labels, BNP's and please put your ABB name in a note when you send us your BnP package. I appreciate if you can send promptly (how about sending out no later then the weekend) and I will return back promptly to you. If you are too busy , please pass on this and give others a chance to get in on these great offers. Above all, enjoy this great music and be kind to the folks doing these BnP's. |
The 5-11-72 show is 3 DISCS and 5-26-72 show is 4 DISCS! Both shows.. 7 Discs total for both shows! PM me for my address , count off and last one closes the door.
For the Grateful Dead, 1972 was again another major transition year in their music. At the start of the year Donna Jean Godchaux was added as backup singer and by mid year, Ron McKernan (Pigpen) was to perform his last show due to serious illness. The band would also drop from their shows in the fall of 1972 for at least 13 years , the spacey "Cryptical Envelopment" that would segue in the "The Other One". Finally, Various band members would also release solo recording efforts in which the songs would be played over the years by the Grateful Dead. Garcia released his solo album "Garcia" in January that included songs such as Deal, Bird Song and Sugaree, Bob Weir released "ACE" in June , that included Playing in the Band , One More Saturday Night , and Cassidy, finally Mickey Hart, who had already left the band in late '71, released Rolling Thunder in September. At this time, the band consisted of Garcia, Lesh, Weir, Ron (Pigpen) McKernan, Godchaux , Kreutzman and Donna . The bands' "Europe 72" which is the focus of Merlin's Box #2 was not released until November of 1972. The cover art included the "rainbow foot" on the front cover and the "ice cream kid" on the back cover.
On Apri 1st , the band departed en masse (close to 45 people strong...including band, crew, office staff, uncles, aunts, 3rd cousins, wives, girlfriends, children and just plain friends) for their two month European Odyssey. Along with their entourage, the band also traveled with 15 tons of equipment and a sixteen track recording system. The tour started at the Wembly Empire Pool in London England (originally to be the Rainbow Theatre in London but that went bankrupt) and finished at the Strand Lycuem in London England along with the New Riders of the Purple Sage (who were also touring Europe at that same time). Germany, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Luxenbourg (Radio Luxenbourg) would be countries the band played during this tour. In classic Grateful Dead fashion, there were two tour buses taking them from venue to venue. These two buses were named the Bozo and Bolo bus. From what I gather the Bozo bus (from Fireside Theatre) was the party bus and the Bolo bus...well the place where you would rest up after the concert on the way to your next location.
This bus ride will stop at two locations, Rotterdam Civic Hall in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and the Strand Lyceum in London, England. Give a good listen to Dark Star at Rotterdam. It is a really great version of that special Grateful Dead song (and a long one too!!). Pig Pen sizzles on Caution and you will hear from the Grateful Dead Bluesman sing "Who do you Love"!!! At Lyceum, you will hear that famous 1972 version of "Truckin" heard on the Europe '72 compilation. At this show, you will also hear some classic Pig Pen.. "Mr. Charlie"...."The Next Time I See You".. Chinatown Shuffle. This is extra special as this would be the last "strong" show PigPen would have with the Grateful Dead, so you are listening to the best of his near last times with the Dead. He would play one more concert in June but he was getting frail at that point and that recording is poor. But enjoy the fabulous Pig here Live and Bright from London, England!
So hop aboard the Bolo or Bozo bus and join us with some great music from the next run from Merlin's Magic Box #2 and take a trip with us to Europe for what will be the peak Grateful Dead Shows in 1972. Later this month you can also get a copy of Rockin The Rhein, which covers the band show from Dusseldorf on April 24th, 1972. So along with the aforementioned Rockin, Europe 72 and Hundred Years Hall you now can add to your Grateful Dead shows, the Merlins Magic Box of Europe....Grateful Dead Style.

Note: This is superior to all circulating copies. The lineage of the DAT
is guaranteed. I did the transfer myself. The DAT was played on a Panasonic
SV-3700, transferred to my Delta DiO 2496, recorded with SoundForge 4.5, and
tracked and burned with CD Architect. EAC was used to create the SHN files.
There is a <1 second patch in Playin' to fix a small spot of tape warble.
The Morning Dew was patched from another previously circulating version with
10-second crossfades on each side to minimize the difference in quality.
There is also a small patch in Sugar Magnolia.
All of these patches came from previously circulating copies.
