Saw this on Dickey's site. Thought it would be interesting to recycle here. Tell us what you have on the old cd player right now.

I am listening to KoKo Taylor, Queen of the Blues.

I know we're not allowed to like rap around here, but for all the garbage in it, there's some stuff that's very socially and politically conscious. In a lot of ways, I think rap is the modern equivalent of the original blues (of Robert Johnson and earlier). It exists as a record of a world that most of us here don't really know, and while I think some of the gang-banging stuff is crap, there's also a side to it that documents the existence of these things and sheds perspective on them. There's a lot of value to that.
I don't enjoy stuff that's misogynistic or violent either, but with all due respect to Gregg Allman, the "it's not music" argument is bull.
Liking or not liking anything is your prerogative, obviously. But not liking something (or its subject matter) doesn't make it not music. You KNOW when some people heard Robert Johnson decades ago, they said the same things.

Oh, and I was just finishing my first listen (or at least first that I can remember) of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.

I just finished cd one of the Dickey Betts Band 7/3/01. They finished off disc one with Donna Maria. That is really a fine Dickey instrumental.

Have a cop write you a $80 ticket for leaving your truck running while going into the supermarket to get a gallon of milk & a six pack of beer and you'll be saying f*** the police too.

At Work Today = I brought all 3 Captain Beyond releases.....on Capricorn Records of course.

At Home = Faith No More "Angel Dust"

In My truck = Dickey Betts "Rockpalast Live 03-04-1978"

On the Rap Issue:

I liked N.W.A. too, then went on a Public Enemy kick for a while.

But I'm still A big Dr.Dre freak, to me "The Chronic" was a landmark release for Rap music..and yep ole Snoop too.

The one N.W.A. does where Aunt Esther from "Sanford and Son" comes in and talks some dirty **** ..blows my mind.

But in the last year or two...I lost interest in it...and never play them much anymore.
Except the "Chronic" from time to time.

Later Folks,
Kenny

Marley,

I agree with you in regards to rap & hip hop to a certain extent, but there hasn't been that ONE artist in the genre that demands to be heard by everyone.

Where is the Bob Dylan of rap (the closest being Public Enemy??)? See, Motown artists caught on with this idea, as you mentioned Marvin Gaye. Music with conscious & thought, along to a groove.

And at one point, rap was FUN type of music, with humor. Somewhere along the way, it's been lost in a shuffle of gang banging & ho's.

Gregg Allman might be quick to judge about rap being "crap".... but currently, it ain't that good either. Entertaining maybe....

As for Robert Johnson, I am sure that many dismissed this sort of music at the time, but it also caught the ears of folks like Keith Richards & Eric Clapton (more importantly, Elmore James & countless many others). His music helped shape rock & roll. Po' Robert....

It's safe to say Robert Johnson's music will hold up & stand the test of time better than say..... Tupac or Biggie.

The Double "Live at the Fillmore" is a great set...I'm sure you have it.

Everything from the "Fillmore" is good.

On a positive note, I was on hold the other day and the music on the line was James Brown! I was hoping he would keep me on hold all day!

On the Rap/Ro Johnson thing...times were a little different in his day and an artist coming from his...background was not really socially excepted in a not so PC 20's and 30's. That being said, I do like NWA Straight Out of Compton, some Dre and Too Short...all for comedic value and humor, not music quality. Music can play a number of different roles in our lives!

In the car...Jimi 7/4/70 Atlanta Pop
At Home...PL&F & Robert Randolph
In my Alarm Clock....An amazing solo guitarist names Jason Dennie. Check out my web site link or Hittin the Web Radio to catch a listen, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Peace,
Josh

Now thats an one Band I have not heard of in a while.

When I was 15 I borrowed a bunch of albums from this old Hippie dude that lived on my street..

Had some:
Groundhogs
Screaming Lord Sutch
Captain Beefhart
Iggy and The stooges
Atomic Rooster
Cactus

At the time I did not know who any of them were...but I did after that.

Later,
Kenny

If I remember correctly, Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer was the drummer for Atomic Rooster. I saw ELP tripping my ass off circa 1976???
