this came to my academic email address, and though I asked him to provide his "fides", wondered if he was casting about for free music.

"Dear Carlos,

My name is _________ and I have a small press that does signed, limited
editions. I have worked with John Updike, Shelby Foote and President Ford
among others.

My next project is a book about Duane Allman. The musicians who are
contributing essays have astounded me with the outpouring of support. It is
time for everyone to have what is in the hearts published for all to read and
learn.

Carlos, the reason that I am writing to you is because of your outstanding
collection of historical recordings. I would like to try and work out some
deal with you to get copies of everything that you have that Duane played on.

I have a small press and have just adopted my second daughter from Russia so I
don't have an unlimited budget. I have to be careful, but would love to
compensate you if you can share with me what you have in your collection. I
can send blank CDs and whatever else you might like.

Please if you get a chance to think about this I will greatly appreciate your
time and effort."

It is great that someone, other than our own Marley (hint, hint) is working on a DA book, but I was curious to see if anyone else has been approached by him, or, if he is a member of our own family, and used a commercial email address to contact me.

Anyway, stranger things have happened.

Cheers

Carlos "maybe we will see a book before I pass on" Rivera

ask him what kind of press. 4 color?- 1 color? - digital , web ? what kind of binding and paper he plans on using ? I'm in the printing biz. I work for one of the biggest in the world actually. Post what he claims and I'll tell you if it's legit. I'd be wary of this, sounds like BS right of the bat to me. Usually who writes the book rarely prints it as well.

Writer> Agent> publisher> printer.

Ohh my business must be booming seeing how I'm on the ABB GB and Forum alot this week

Carlos, What was the on Subject line? I deleted 2 unsolicted emails from the same person without opening them. Thought it might be a virus since the subject was "Message" and something else was the subject of the other one.

Fast

The subject line is simply "Duane Allman". It may be legit, but I would have thought he'd better luck and response from pms to us.

Cheers

Carlos

I haven't gotten that e-mail and now I'm feeling a little slighted.
I'd love to do the book, Carlos, all I need is someone to pay me for it. I like to think I've done a lot of research and preparation for free, but when it comes to writing an actual book... anybody here who happens to be a publisher, feel free to contact me, okay?

I'm not too worried about that, it'll get taken care of in time.

which do you want...an agent or publisher?...some one layed out the way it works...writer...agent...pub....print.... thought movie rights are a bigger sell....moneywise....you sell the idea to a studio....even if the movie never gets made you still get to keep the check...if you are smart your agent will get you a small piece of pie, say a half percent of the movies gross and rental pie....that is if your work makes it to the silverscreen...remember shane black sold lethal weapon as an idea for 6 figures...

It's probably harder to find a publisher, isn't it?

I'm actually concentrating in magazine writing, and that's exactly what I hope to do when I graduate... magazine articles get optioned for movies very often, probably since someone once theorized that the best source material for a movie is actually a short story.

it is harder to find a publisher, my agent has been working now for almost 2 yrs. to find someone to publish my first novel. i'm in the middle of editing my second which i hope will be the one...if not i will move onto my third... short stories and magazine articles are easier to sell...stand by me by stephen king is a perfect example...not quite a novel or article it was able to find a movie audience...i can't think of a magazine article that has been optioned for a full movie, anyone help?
just remember that it took f. scott fitzgerald over one hundred tries before his first story got published and in its' time the great gatsby was a commercial failure...
magazine articles are the way to go...you really don't need an agent and if you can get published more than once it is easier to connect with an agent and then get your writing
seriously looked at.... i still think that a great book about the allman brothers would be something like the grateful dead books, where fans write their thoughts about the band and the memoribilia is out there...tour posters, band photos,ect....judging from just this website the fan base could come up with more than enough items to fill a book...plus a history of the band as it moves across the yrs.

i'm willing to bet it was your manifesto Jim - all they needed to do was take it right from the guestbook!

Agent, it's his job to find a publisher.

it is the agents job to find the publisher, but sometimes you can side step the agent and go directly to the publishing house...sometimes a writer will get very lucky...plus you won't have to lose 10% on books and 15% on screen rights...at least that's what my agent will get if my stuff ever gets sold
writer's market has a whole section of agents, i just started with the ones in boston and new york and just sent out my queries, outlines, and cover letters and found someone who was willing to work with it ...i also have a draw full of rejection slips
