I have heard a story that those 2 competed against one another in a best little guitar player or something when they were kids. Anyone knows who won or anything about it? Who, what, when, where, why?

I've really only seen them play together honoring freddie king at thr rock roll hall of fame induction. It's subjective but I thought Joe owned the stage and derek was a little out of his element.

Derek talks a little about it starting at the 25:00 minute mark.

I could see how Bonnamossa might offer something more Freddie King-ish than Derek.

Derek's comments about how Bonamassa was telling his dad to go get him a coke and Derek's dad's reaction was great.

That story cracked me up. Bonamassa is more of a pseudo-blues shredder, so I could see him maybe making more of a statement in a short-form Freddie King-style back and forth. Not that it matters...

i did not hear/see the freddie king thing, but it would not surprise me if derek was respectful and held back and JB was out front and over the top.

I can see Bonamassa winning over a crowd with his OTT histrionics, but for sheer ingenuity and skill, Derek's playing wins hands down every time. No contest IMHO!

A thousand people can do what Joe does; nobody can do what Derek does.

Derek might not be the best ever - and I think the idea of “ranking” musicians is asinine (although the ABB are the greatest band of all time), but Joe B travels some much paved road. Derek is out there having blazed his own trail.

joes simply more of a showboat and dereks more legit. (Its great that bonamasso's not simply sitting at home reading comic books & playing video games.)
Sorry but dereks the real deal.Derek can build a solo over 12 minutes to different levels 5x while other guys hop in and burn for a minute or 2...in my opinion

I prefer Derek's playing.

That said - Derek is blazing his own trail? Playing R&B? Sorry it has been done. Let's be real at least.

A thousand Joe's? Not bloody likely. You are really not giving Joe his due with statements like that.
The guy can play like the wind, his output is beyond compare in the current music scene. He is keeping the blues in the spotlight more than any blues player today.

He gets bashed on here often as if he is some stiff who can't play. Absurd.

He may be playing a travelled road but does it extremely well. Derek too is travelling a road that has also been travelled.

Both are excellent players and both real nice guys if you get a chance toi say hi.

Don't see the need to bash one to enjoy the other.

Just curious, do you play? Because what Derek does is 1000% his own. It's in the realm of some other genres but nobody plays what Derek plays, or plays like Derek plays. He's his own animal entirely.

HA! Awesome. Yeah, I didn't mean to insinuate anything by it, I was just curious. I don't know of any guitarist that can (or even has) balanced soul with such Eastern themes so uniquely.

Excuse me? Taking a twelve piece band on the road and selling out shows, and making it work financially for everyone....that has been done how many times, in the last 30 years? I'm gonna guess zero. No disrespect to the author of those comments, this band is a phenomenon. There are, in fact, probably 500, or so, bands like Joe's, obviously without the talent Joe possesses, on the road today. Derek and Susan's band is NOT travelling a road that has been travelled before, in recent memory or with any of their contemporaries.

Joe is one of the great guitar players out there today. So is Derek. I remember Derek and his band playing in a little bar/pool hall in High Point, North Carolina. For an Allman Brothers fan seeing him was really cool. He sounded so much like Duane Allman. More so than Warren Haynes. Derek said Duane was what got his attention and he wore out a copy of At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach. Yes he seemed to be a Duane Allman clone. But different too as he played mostly slide and never used a pick. To my surprise several years later he joined the ABB. His slide playing channeled Duane but by 1999 he had his own style too and it's grown from then to now. Derek has his own way of playing which is how it is with all the greats. Dickey Betts, B B King, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen etc are like that. You can spot their style straight away.

Joe on the other hand may not have his own style. But he is really, really good. Joe can blast a flurry of notes with a pick as fast and clean as anybody.

But Joe himself says he was inspired by Walter Trout then Gary Moore and he admitted he basically is using the Gary Moore playbook on stage. And indeed for those who are Gary Moore fans I think have to admit Gary's style is all over Joe's playing. Derek, on the other hand, move forward from using a Duane Allman playbook in the 1990s.

Joe again is a fantastic guitar player and can shred with a pick a flurry of notes Derek apparently can't do. But it's too much like Gary Moore whereas Derek has his own great style. Joe sounds like Gary Moore and Walter Trout. Derek Trucks sounds like Derek Trucks.

Good call. I've always thought of Joe as very similar to Gary Moore too, in terms of having mastered that clean British Blues on Steroids sound, balancing an understanding of traditional elements with plenty of modern shred.

I've never seen either player as all that innovative, but then, I don't see Warren as a groundbreaker either. I do love his playing though.

Derek offers a more unique sound.

"That said - Derek is blazing his own trail? Playing R&B? Sorry it has been done. Let's be real at least."

This underrates Derek, which is a natural thing to do if you're engaged in comparison and are hurt by what people are saying about a player you like. To assert that all Derek does is play r & b is to perpetuate an inaccuracy though. The TTB play some r'n'b very well, indeed, but they do many other things. They play "out" jazz, they play blues, they rock. Derek himself as a player fluidly puts unique touches within his solos and his stand-alone moments. The way the man can meld Eastern scales on slide and wild jazzy legato runs without slide in the context of a 3-chord rocker is incredibly unusual.

When are people going to stop this nonsense? Everyone has their own perception and they are all entitled. Please don't continue this who's better than who debate. Allow the players to play and stop with the endless debate which is unable to be qualified.
Just enjoy whomever you happen to like and let it go at that. To quote Jerry Douglas "this is not a race".

First off - I love Derek, Susan and the band. Was a major supporter here from day 1.

That said - a large band playing R&B - their very basis is the Mad Dogs theme band. Much of the music that they play is by bands that were large R&B bands.

With the utmost respect - it has been done. Doesn't mean that I don't love it. Who else currently? Well the other guy in this thread for one.

Joe has had bands that large on tour and even bigger at times. Was a little funny to see you write no one else does it in a thread comparing the two.

Derek is a very unique player and I never stated otherwise. But he didn't invent the wheel. He takes influences and uses them. Pretty much like every player does. I love his playing and always have. Jazz, blues, Indian influences all over.

Joe - Plays some jazz stuff, blues, hard rock and all the weird stuff he just did with all those various musicians on different instruments. He has put out all sorts of varied projects.

People can play ping pong opinions but really hard to knock either really successful and talented players.

Lots of bad players out there to knock - why pick good ones?
