OMG is this from the Warehouse???
Silent (I assume) footage of ABB with Duane, and it's not Love Valley or Fillmore.

RIP bro. Gregg -- will be amped up to max when I sit down to listen to Sourthern Blood

I believe the footage of the original ABB is from Gregg's personal files.

I expect to see and hear a lot more unreleased music from a very large vault. We just got a hint of what's coming.

Well I notice that Dickey is playing a Fender Strat. Does anyone know, when he stop playing a fender? It's save to say this is no Dec. 31, 1970 or Sept. 19, 1971 based on the picture from those shows.

These are the show listed here on the website:
1970:
Mar. 13-14, May 15-15, Nov. 7. Dec 31,

1971:
Mar. 20, Jun. 5, Sept. 16.

Great great stuff!!! Hope there's more to come. Dickey played a Strat on & off from Feb.70-to May,June 1970. Who knows if there were exceptions here & there....

Dickey played Goldie after it was painted red at the two Beacon shows I saw in 1999. But the 4 shows I saw later in the year after Derek replaced Jack, Dickey was playing his old Strat hard tail tobacco burst with lots of road wear. Duane Betts has that guitar now plus his number one is Dickey's first signature Gold Top Paul. I think Duane Betts said his dad's old hard tail is a 1956 Strat. Dickey thought it was a fine guitar especially for rhythm tracks in the studio.

The footage on the new Gregg video has Duane with a sunburst Paul and Dickey with a Strat. I'm 71 years old and going back to when I was hard core original band following them around on vacations or between jobs and my memory was Duane played the sunburst and Dickey the Strat a lot from about December 1969 to about May of 1970. So that's likely the time frame of the footage. When Dickey decided he wanted a Les Paul because he liked Duane's tone ( he played a big red Gibson 355 or 345 before the Strat) Dickey went through several Les Paul's including one that was actually an SG before he finally settled on Goldie about 1974. About the 5th or 6th Les Paul had zebra pickups and was light cherry burst finish and a roadie said that was the best one so far but Dickey didn't use it but about 2 years because the roadie said it was bad about going out of tune. That is when Dickey found the 1957 Goldtop he called Goldie in a store in New York City. It was his number one for 20 years then he suddenly went to a Paul Reed Smith in 1994 but in short order he was playing a red 335, a yellow Strat then he brought out his old 56 Strat with a new neck pickup and used that mostly for 3 years or so. And he used the 56 Strat in Great Southern for slide and Nobody to Run With. Dickey said he owns over 30 guitars including the guitar Duane used on Little Martha. That's it on the cover of Highway Call.

Duane's last number one was a tobacco burst Les Paul with Duane on the back of the body out of old frets as I remember. Isn't that right?

A friend back then told me Duane was talking guitars with some of the fans before a show in South Carolina and he said he was thinking about building his own guitar with a big Les Paul pickup on a Telecaster body with the best Stratocaster neck he could find. He may have been kidding but I've seen in print that before the ABB he did have a Telecaster with a Strat neck bolted on.

I know there have been some fantastic lineups of the ABB but from late 1970 until Duane was killed, that was absolutely the high water mark for the Allman Brothers. The energy, creativity, new material and how tight they were shows you what youth and playing two years without taking much time off can do to a rock and roll band with all exceptional musicians. Plus the booze and drugs probably hurt things rather than making it better. It hard to imagine Fillmore East and the live tracks on Eat APeach being any better but maybe so if they had been sober. Butch Trucks said Mountain Jam on Eat a Peach was not as hot and other worldly as they usually played it the last year Duane was alive.

It was never as good to me after Duane died but Chuck, Lamar, Dan Toler, Rook and especially Warren, Allen, Otiel, Jack and Derek kept it damn close. Too bad Dickey had to leave because when he was really playing, his sound and material was just as key to the classic ABB sound as Gregg, Duane, Butch and Jaimoe. And Oakley's unconventional 3rd lead guitar approach to bass playing was a huge part of the classic ABB sound. Allen and Otiel channeled Berry's style on the old stuff rather well I thought.

And it's stunning to this huge fan of the original band to note that Dickey and Jaimoe are the only Allman Brothers left. Man.

Great to see you back again, Gary. Your insights have been much missed but your kid has been holding up the fort admirably in your absence.

This footage is such a fantastic thing to suddenly emerge.

This is interesting:

I can def. see Duane having said that... Basically, that's a Tele Deluxe, which I have and love

I want to see that footage creep outta the vaults. KIRK WEST, man, I have to wonder if he knew about it.

I'm amazed anyone in/round the ABB kept that a secret.

Here's to hoping Jaimoe writes a book before he passes on.

I heard years ago that Gregg had extremely old footage like this but he was holding onto it until he wanted to release it.

On facebook people are theorizing that this footage is from a 1970 show at Piedmont Park.

well there are 2 different old shows here, given Gregg's outfit, and one of them seems to have the boys in the same clothing as warehouse photos....but I could be wrong. Which FB are they discussing this?

Maybe Shannon & Michael Lehman will step up and do the right thing and RELEASE the FOOTAGE!!

I just received an email from Concord Music Group for the Southern Blood release. It has a link to video for I Love the Life I Live & underneath it says featuring previously unreleased footage of the Allman Brothers Band live in Piedmont Park Atlanta 1970.

Tough one to understand.....although I see both sides of this. It was treasured family stuff to Gregg, all he had left, in his mind, memories not to be shared or performances not "perfect" to his ears....One (especially his die hard fans) continue to scratch their heads and wonder why whatever is out there was not released for all to bathe in.....Whatever the reasons, just another tip of the hat to how reserved, shy and private he really was.....

Dude, you and your brother are so missed....

The more I look at this video and great track from Southern Blood, it seems it IS the same show with the old footage.

I think the difference is some of it has the sharp jacket Gregg had in 1970 on him and in some of it he has taken it off. The shirt seems to be the same and the other guys the same.

The order I placed for the CD I'n May 16, got lost in their transfer to a new system. If you haven't received your order, you may want to call them.
