In July I am making my first trip to Atlanta. I am going to the Metallica show and driving down to Macon to the Big House and Rose hill Cemetery. Any other attractions suggested?

if you are staying downtown, the Aquarium, Civil Rights Museum and College Football Hall of Fame are right around Centennial Park.

A trip to Piedmont Park in Midtown is great. You can see the steps / platform the ABB played on back in 1969-1970. You can rent a bike and go down the eastside Beltline right off the park, and go to Ponce City Market and visit from other restaurants etc. It's a heavily traveled paved path so it's an easy bike ride of a couple miles and then you can back track.

If you have other time, a trip to Stone Mountain and climb of the mountain is great. It's a great & unique state park about 30 minutes outside downtown.

And we have loads of great restaurants in Midtown, Downtown, Edgewood, Virginia Highland etc

A visit to the MLK historic site: great visitor center, tomb, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and birth home is also downtown about a mile from Centennial Park....long walk or Street car.

You might want to check out local clubs Venkman's, City Winery, the Earl, the Star Bar, Variety Playhouse, Eddie's Attic & Smith's to see who is playing when you are in town. tedeschi trucks band is at the fox on 7/15 if you are still around then (probably not)--and maybe a stop at Atlanta institution the Varsity although you will probably leave wondering why it's an Atlanta institution. also string cheese incident at Chastain on 7/7. hope that helps.

The Vortex in Little Five Points. The best burgers, great atmosphere and scenery. https://thevortexatl.com/

+1 for Little Five Points. It's interesting in a quirky sort of way. Chances are you'll have to drive by Piedmont Park to get there.

Enjoy your time.

Agree. Little Five Points is our mini Haight Asbury. Note that "Five Points" is a different spot (and just a cross section of streets & Marta subway in downtown (no need to specifically visit).

If you rented bikes near Piedmont Park (we have those bike rental spots where you cant use credit card to get a bike and return it to a different one if you want), you can actually go on the the Beltline to the Freedom Pkwy PATH right into Little Five Points. See some cool parts of Atlanta along the way....again all just 2-3 miles of a trek.

Or just uber around.

Yeah for sure I meant Little Five Points, neat neighborhood. Not a local so didn't know there was another Five Points. Anyway, great for hanging out and soaking up atmosphere.

I hear Athens is fun and UGA is a beautiful campus. It's about 90 minutes east. Either way, enjoy your trip!

A lot of great suggestions here. I'd like to add the High Museum of Art (if that's your thing). Walking distance from the Fox/Piedmont Park - also on the MARTA line. They do charge an admission, but they have great permanent and traveling collections.

Six Flags over Georgia is still in operation - west of town on I-20. You can always catch the Braves playing - but I'm not familiar with their new digs.

Kennesaw Mountain is great for hiking and history ("the great war of northern aggression" ).

Once in the Macon area you can check out the Ocmulgee National Indian Mounds/Park and the Harriet Tubman Museum.

No love for the Clermont? Any woman can dance on a pole, but how many can crush a beer can with their breasts?

Ha, funny Rusty. I've never been but I know some "pals" who've dropped by on an Alabama football weekend.

I think they specialize in some older dancers, too, no?

clermont update--it's in the basement of a building that has been under renovation for a while. the bar has announced it's "re-opening" a couple of times recently but I don't think that has happened yet.

just to follow up, one reason I know anything at all about the Clermont is because I talked to one of the bartenders who was out of work while it was closed & she was working at the towne cinema, a re-opened club in Avondale Estates with real good sound, 6 miles or so from downtown atl and not far from the marta line. just happens I will be there tomorrow night to see Escape Vehicle a sort of dead-based band I like, then Saturday night for a 50th anniversary celebration of Monterey Pop with two talented and versatile bands the Rainmen and Kitten Fontaine, should be good. counting down to 50 years since Woodstock, coming up in 2019. also happened to drop by rose hill today, saw a steady stream of folks dropping by like I did. good weather but plenty of gnats, Georgia in the summertime for sure!

The Porter Beer Bar. The Wrecking Bar Brew Pub. Both in L5P. You could get a burger at The Vortex before or after.

Had a great time in Atlanta. Went to Macon and the Big house museum and Rose hill cemetery, spectacular. Atlanta was a really good time. Stayed at the highland inn and checked out the MLK museum, went to the torched hop brewery and other restaurants. Did the Uber thing to suntrust park and went to the Metallica show, they were awesome.

Wow, blast from my past. I stayed there in the early or mid-1990s and it felt at the time a bit like the hotel in Blues Brothers movie. An exaggeration, yes. I know it's been through at least one major renovation/redecoration since then, and has opened up the ballroom in the basement for events and some jazz shows.

Glad you had fun, 31....

Thanks Zambi, Ya my Girlfriend booked the hotel, it was a nice cheap place to stay in a good area of town, the BBQ place next to it smelled so freaking good, I believe it was called sweet Auburn BBQ. I liked Atlanta alot, people were friendly and I was wearing an ABB t-shirt and received quite a few compliments.
