Singer Ian Gillan of legendary British hard rockers DEEP PURPLE has slammed as "very silly" the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's decision to exclude guitarist Steve Morse and keyboardist Don Airey from the band's upcoming induction.

DEEP PURPLE — which has been eligible for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for two decades now — will finally enter the Rock Hall as part of the class of 2016. The band's first three lineups are being inducted, including drummer Ian Paice, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, late keyboardist Jon Lord, and separate teams of singers and bassists — Rod Evans and Nick Simper, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, and David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

Writing on his official web site, Gillan.com, Ian said about DEEP PURPLE's 2016 Rock Hall nod: "Putting the past shenanigans to one side, the induction is not — in clear fact — for DEEP PURPLE. It is an arbitrary selection of past members, which excludes Steve Morse and Don Airey; both of whom have been with the living breathing DEEP PURPLE for a very long time.

"Obviously, this is very silly, and so my response is quite simple: 'Thank you very much.'

"And… what a coincidence… This morning I got an invitation to a wedding from some dear old friends. Unfortunately, my family was not invited and they said that I would be required to sit next to my ex (we divorced decades ago) at the wedding feast.

"They were shocked when I called to thank them and decline the invitation."

Morse has been part of PURPLE since 1994, while Airey replaced Jon Lord in 2001.

Paice told Rolling Stone about DEEP PURPLE's current lineup: "We don't have salaried guys with Don and Steve. They are fully accredited members of the band and they share in everything, and into decisions as well."

He added: "This is the longest we've ever been together. We're having fun. We have a finite article here. That ticking of the clock, you can't ignore it. And one day it won't be possible, but right now that day isn't on the horizon yet. As long as we're enjoying it and as long as the people want to see it and as long as we believe we can do it to the standard that people would expect, we'll keep doing it. That's the important thing."

It's common knowledge that there are certain factions within the extended PURPLE family who clearly do not get along. Despite this, Paice told Billboard that he is hopeful everyone will be able to put their differences aside in time for the Rock Hall induction. "I see Glenn quite frequently," the drummer said. "I haven't seen [Coverdale] in a long time, but I don't have any problem with David. And after all this time, I don't have a problem with Ritchie. I really hope he's happy in what he's doing. At the end of the day we're far enough along in our lives now that I just hope everybody's having a good time. The crap that went on before, that's what it is — it's before."

On the one hand, i would love to see all the DP guys show up and play. It would be wonderful to see them in an all-star jam.

However, I sure do respect Gillan standing up for the Morse line-up. They have not been hitmakers, but they make great music. It is worth standing up for.

I'm not surprised by Ian Gillan's response. I give props for sticking to his guns.

I wonder if Blackmore had anything to do with this. He's got the ego and the meanness for something like this.

No it is a matter of the HOF being forced over time to put them in as it was obviously stupid to put people with 1 or 2 album careers in and not a band like DP. But as if to provide a slap anyway, they excluded those guys just to piss the band off.

It is stupid to exclude them.

Looking at the rock and roll HOF committee rooster it has been led by the same person as either Chair or co-chair for the last 20 years.

I can only conclude that this person for whatever reason does not like this band.

Considering how long Morse and Airey have been with the band, I have to agree with Gillan on this.

Both these guys should be in also - they have helped keep DP alive and kicking for a long time! I hope there is room for adjustment/consideration.

I agree 100%.

We saw Deep Purple this past summer, I hadn't seen them live since 1975.

It was a fun show, we had a great time.

To exclude Morse & Airey is ridiculous, but so was excluding the entire band for 20 years.

Heck Don Airey should be in just for what he has done as a musician. He has played with tons of people and played on many recordings. And also those were big shoes to fill when Lord left the band. Not too many people could have done that, so thats saying alot.

Just go to his page to check his music bio out.
http://www.donairey.com/discography.html

I like the break down in Hell To Pay where Don has a liittle organ solo going and Rogers bass is just pumping and driving the song.
Go to the 2:30 mark it starts there.

Oh yeah..Steve Morse...thats all that needs to be said.

I agree, very stupid move on the part of the HOF. However, the conspiracy theorist in my also thinks it's great publicity for all parties as well. A little controversy never hurts to get the word out about the useless, in my opinion, Rock and Roll hall of fame. But i digress.....

X3!!! Filling Lord's shoes were HUGE shoes to fill. Lord was always a centerpiece of the band's music but never really got the credit that Blackmore or even Bolin did.

I've seen them with Airey four or five times; he's an INCREDIBLE musician.

Original DEEP PURPLE Bassist NICK SIMPER Shrugs Off ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME Snub

January 8, 201623 Comments

Read more at http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/original-deep-purple-bassist-nick-simper-s hrugs-off-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-snub/#MWAX7EzLVRWUVmbi.99

Original DEEP PURPLE bassist has told U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine that it's "strange" he isn't being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame alongside his former bandmates.

DEEP PURPLE — which has been eligible for induction into the Rock Hall for two decades now — will finally enter the Rock Hall as part of the class of 2016. Most of the members of the band's first three lineups are being inducted, including drummer Ian Paice, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, late keyboardist Jon Lord, and various singers and bassists — Rod Evans; Ian Gillan and Roger Glover; and David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

Simper said: "The first I knew about the Hall Of Fame induction was when I read about it and fans were complaining that I wasn't being inducted.

"Maybe I am being naive, but I always thought that if a band gets into the Hall Of Fame, then all members, past and present, are part of it. Obviously not.

"Yes, it is a little strange that I am only only one from Marks I, II and III being left out, but I shan't lose any sleep over this. It's not as if I need to be given this award to know what we did in DEEP PURPLE made an impact. And I'm sure it wasn't a decision that came from the band.'

Simper added that there is no bad blood between him and the other members of the original DEEP PURPLE. He said: "I was in regular contact with Jon Lord before he died, and Ian Paice is always sending his best wishes through mutual friends like Bernie Marsden. And I have also toured with Don Airey, with whom I get on well."

DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan recently slammed as "very silly" the Rock Hall's decision to exclude guitarist Steve Morse and keyboardist Don Airey from the band's upcoming induction.

Morse has been part of PURPLE since 1994, while Airey replaced Jon Lord in 2001.

Morse and Airey are a huge part of DP'S success, don't blame Gillan at all.
