SXSW Film 2015: Legendary Leon Russell documentary finally unveiled

"A Poem Is a Naked Person" was long considered a near-mythical entity, mainly because so few people had actually seen it.

The documentary about singer-songwriter Leon Russell -- filmed during a peak period (1972-1974) in the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's career -- never received an official theatrical release. Yet, some of the lucky folks who managed to see the film claimed that it was absolutely amazing.

And we were forced to take their word on it -- at least until now.

"A Poem Is a Naked Person" has finally been freed from film purgatory, undergoing the full digital restoration process and receiving a world premiere -- some 40 years after the original film's intended release date -- at the 2015 South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival in Austin, Texas. Hopefully, SXSW will be a springboard for this "Poem" to reach fans across the globe.

The film is a fine example of the cinema verite style that was so en vogue with documentarians of the era. There's no strong storyline or conventional plot, just simply a series of intriguing scenes that pull us into Russell's fascinating world.

Although much of the filming was done at Russell's recording studio in Oklahoma, there is a strong Bay Area connection with "A Poem Is a Naked Person." The film was directed by the late Les Blank, who lived in Berkeley and operated an office in El Cerrito.
