Nothing better to do while waiting around for a baby to be born......

Lot's of ABB tunes are really great, but for me there's nothing that compares with Blue Sky....

So...simply for my own enjoyment, I'm thinking about compiling a "Blue Sky and Nuthin' but Blue Sky" disc.

I sure would appreciate some suggestions on your favorite Blue Sky versions - any ABB "era" or DB&GS, or any "covers" like from Phil and Friends....Thanks!

Lots of folks are certainly going to nominate one of the two Duane versions that we have (there are two, aren't there?), so let me jump ahead a couple decades.

Holmdel, NJ, 8/16/94, SBD. My favorite, hands down. Both Warren and Dickey simply rip it up, and up, and up. Warren's solo goes on forever. Great stuff.

I only have it on cassette but 3/17/98 Beacon show, unreal! Blew the speakers in my old car for sure!!

The whole show was super high-energy being St Patty's day and all! Good Luck!

Also, there are SBD's available of Phil and Friends '03 Warfield run . . . the first night has a very nice Blue Sky on it, with solos from Jimmy, Rob, and Warren.

I cut right to the chase. Randy's right about 8/16/94....can't listen to that version without wanting to get up and dance....

There's some '99 versions with Derek that go places too....

9/4/99 (might be the next day, but I think that's it) is great.

i'd sure like to hear that "Blue Sky" I missed down at Jaxx last summer
cause I was still boogying out from the Mule Show on the Mall.

The one CleanupedHippie, Tim Hudson, EnigmaJean and I boogied too at Jaxx in 2002
was a good one.

So was the one at the State the other night!

I liked the version Derek and Dickey played at
Merriweather in 99. That show was the first time
I saw Derek, whew! Danced with a Space Vampire
at that show.

Peace

The EAP version is still the one that I like the best. Always reminds me of picnics in the park, kids playing, sunshine everywhere. Hard to beat. Where is that new baby?

New baby appears to be reluctant to meet the outside world.

Jen goes in to be induced at 0730 tomorrow if nothing happens on its own tonight.

...I seem to like whatever version of Blue Sky I happen to be listening to at the moment - that's why I wanted to ask you all....in the last couple of days I've rediscovered 9.8.98 and 8.14.98....I also like the DB&GS from GOTV in 2003...but I'm not supposed to be answering my own question....!

That's Ok Jim

Not Unusual for expectant Fathers to be talking to themselves!

Can't blame the Baby, I got spanked before I even did anything!
Things haven't changed much.

John, forgive me if I've mentioned this before here (I know I have on Dickey's board) but maybe you're thinking of this one or maybe they did it more than once but:

7-27-02 Atlanta

Dickey came out during the P&F set and did the most amazing Blue Sky I think I've ever heard. It was incredible to have Warren and Dickey playing it together again. They had rehearsed it just that afternoon before the show but apparently forgot something because when they get to the line "I'm going to Carolina..." Warren sings that, but Dickey substitutes "Atlanta, Georgia". Didn't ruin the song though. I would have loved to have witnessed it live.

Hey Lee....i think it was done more than once in 2002 - too distracted and lazy to go check for myself, but I think it was Charlotte (or Va Beach???) as well as Atlanta....

Anyone have any Jack Pearson "era" suggestions?

That's certainly possible Jim. I think the Atlanta one must have been first because I remember reading something about Dickey and Warren needing to practice together.

STONYBROOK!!! Surprised that this hasn't shown up yet. I could go the rest of my life without hearing another version of Blue Sky and be perfectly happy about it. It's more than good: It makes every other version of the song obsolete to my ears.

Those 99 versions with Dickey and Derek are really sweet, too

I did see it live, from the stage, no less, and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Jimmy Herring had this smile that would have lit up the whole Buckhead district, Dickey was staring down Warren while Warren was soloing, pushing him, and then Dickey started bouncing around on the stage. Incredible!

I can listen to Stony Brook and the 9.16.71 Blue Sky over and over and over. Berry is unbelievable on this song. You can see (hear) where the original ABB were headed on this one.

Some of my favorites:

EAP version

9/16/71

9/19/71

6/26/99

There are others, those come to mind right away.

The Blue sky from 7-27-02 might be the best , in fact that Phil show might be one of their best, of course my opinion. I like the acoustic version of Blue sky from the hall of fame show. There is a band called the Bankwalkers (formerly Cravin Melon) that do a Blue sky with Ramble on mixed in that sounds really good.

Goliath, I was there with you at that Atlanta Phil and Friends show--one of the greatest musical performances I've ever witnessed. The magic doesn't quite come across on the audience recordings of it, I think. I remember blasting that in my no-air-conditioning car with Lee on the way to the ABB show in Raleigh a week or so later. Hi, David! Hi, Lee!

p.s. Lana and Shey, Lizzy and Greg, Miss Elf, and others, were all at ATL that day, too!
