The 'Bones is the baddest! I recorded it - watched it twice today. Dave sure seemed to enjoy them!

Another great performance!

My only issue is that I wish Browan Lollar would get some chances to show his solo chops from time to time. He has them to spare (which he got to show in Jason Isbell's 400 Unit for a good 4 years). He gets highlighted in the Broken Bones a good bit with the key guitar riffs in most songs. His style in this group is just *spot on* and he gets to be the second most featured stage presence in the group too, but there are some song where even a 45 second solo would fit perfectly near the end of a song....they could actually use it 5-6 times per show just to add to the length of their set since they pretty much just have a single album of songs (have written some new stuff they aren't playing live yet).

Great band. Very good record.

I bought Half the City after listening to them based on the list that Derek posted recently. They're so good.

Fantastic band indeed. Fantastic lead vocalist. Saw them live last summer here in my hometown. They got a huge crowd response which if remembererd correctly got mentioned by them on their facebook page. But gotta agree with hotlantatim that their live shows would be even more amazing if their guitarist or horn section got a bit more time to show their chops. Their debut album is strongly recommended if you dig old school soul music.

Hard to totally appreciate with crummy PC speakers and crummy lo-fi net sound, but they sound very good! They seem to emulate Motown and soul style which is very cool, once you get past white boys doing it As for solo's, that really doesn't fit traditionally that genre.

^^ Absolutely 100% correct Bird72! They aren't a guitar or jam band. What they do is a tip of the hat to 1960's soul/R&B music. Paul's main influences are Otis and Wilson Pickett. If you go see them, you might even catch them doing some Eddie Hinton covers (Paul is a HUGE "Hintonite"!). That 60's soul stuff rarely featured the guitarist. In their shows, they do let everybody stretch out some. I'd drive several hundred miles to catch these guys!

Very cool album. I downloaded it from i tunes the same day I got Sturgil Simpson's Meta Modern sounds record and that consumed my ears for 2 weeks straight. Just getting into St Paul now. The singer's voice reminds me of Mike Farris from Screaming Cheetah Wheelies.
If you like St Paul, check out Farris' latest album "Shine for all people". I know some people shy away from Gospel but it's really good. The guys got some pipes.

Back to St Paul, the acclaim they're getting reminds me of the exposure Alabama Shakes got a few years ago. There are more people out there that want real music than the radio programers think..

Here is the other song by St. Paul and The Broken Bones from the Letterman. Dave appears to really be enjoying them.

WOW. Now THAT is White Soul.....!

Great performance! And their album is now on reserve in my name at the local library.

This not a slam but I heard and saw just a little bit of "Jake Elwood" in the singer's voice and stage persona. Wonder if the R & B performances in the Blues Brothers movie were an early influence for him ?

One of the reasons I like Dave Letterman is he is obviously a big music fan. He is always gracious with his music guests after they finish performing. He always comes out and shakes hands.

But...you can always tell when he REALLY likes someone.

Thanks for posting both of these Lisajess...

I don't know if the Jake-Belushi-Blues similarity is intentional or not. Also not sure if Paul realizes that that suit is about a size or two on the small side! Either way, they're a great band and a fun show!
