Just sitting here listening to Pretzel Logic (just started side 2). Now, I am a Steely Dan fan. But, I understand there is no real grey area with them. You either like them or you don't. I am interested to hear from both sides on why.

And I am not one of those fans who say if you don't like them, then you don't get them. If you don't like them, you don't like them. That's why there are so many genres of music out there.

I don't have a liberal arts degree, so I am unable to dissect their lyrics like some folks do. But I don't feel the need to do so. They are fantastic musiicians and the jazz/funk/rock blend just is good to listen to. Fagen's perfectionism comes across in every song they do. Crisp, sharp, and on the money...nothing is done sloppily.

I'm a fan. A lot of there studio work adds to the soundtrack of my life.

Now that I've seen them live five times I'm a bigger fan. Fagan is a great showman. The musicianship above par. The backup singers - delightful. The performance is pure professionalism.

I'm very sorry they are not coming closer to me this Summer. I'd love another show.

With the incredible body of work that they have, it's hard for me to imagine anyone not finding SOMETHING in there that they like. I'm certainly not a big fan, but Aja is just off the hook, my favorite record by them. And I saw them probably 6 or 7 years ago............GREAT live band as well, and most every song has some room for soloing in it. Side note: I saw them in the early days, one of the very few tours they did before they became strictly a studio band for 20 years. Believe it or not, they opened for Black Oak Arkansas, 1972. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on lead guitar. Yes, they were quite good. And we knew who they were, Do It Again and Reelin' In The Years were already on the radio.

Have seen them since early 90s when they decided to actually tour...Have enjoyed all the shows after the first one... have also enjoyed Fagens solo stuff thru out the years... Pretzel Logic, Royal Scam, Aja are among my favorite albums of theirs.

I'm a fan..I'm seeing them tonight in Portland, OR..At a place that reminds me of The Beacon in that it's an opulent Opera House.. Pretty excited too..

Was supposed to see Gregg this weekend at The Waterfront Blues Festival, as well. But, like the 3 Beacon Shows I missed in March when they canceled, I miss him again.. Just not in the cards I guess..

Catchy, yet sophisticated hooks - great musicianship - intellectual humor ... what's not to absolutely love? One of the truly great live acts - the best studio albums ever recorded! Can you tell that I'm a fan?

like someone said in an earlier post" a sound track of my life" i have all the albums from the 70's. it's way too difficult to name a favorite. because of them i started getting into jazz much like the abb and srv got me into the blues. check out how their albums did on the charts. not too shabby

Steely Dan is one of the few bands (IMO) that truly exemplifies everything that's awesome about music. They're just f'n awesome.

fantastic live band. all great musicians and amazing singers. great runs at The Beacon in early fall for a number of years. Love all their music. Gaucho is one of my favorites. I am not sure how long they worked on that record.

I haven't listened to them for a bit, This thread has inspired me to dig out some stuff. Besides their reg stuff I have a couple boot cd's, Plastic Dildo Rehearsals and the absolutely fabulous Calling From Rikki which was live in at UC radio station studio in '74. Well worth a chasedown if you didn't know it exists.

A casual listener over the years; went to see them with my son a few years ago at the Beacon. The only concert we've ever both walked out of at its end and both went "huh." Just didn't feel any emotional connection.

Interesting the many comments on their live shows -- for a long time they never even toured (IIRC) --
Definitely a fan -- their 2-LP Best of from the early 80s covers a lot of it -- Pretzel Logic & Any Major Dude are faves
Anybody familiar with their comeback Two Against Nature CD? That's when they seemed to begin touring...

Always loved the Dan, saw them a few years ago at the Beacon and they played the Royal Scam album, one of my favorite albums and they sounded great., also love the first album. Was also at the ABB when Donald Fagan was one of the guests, at first I thought it would be an odd pairing until I listened to the music and thought it was pretty damn good.

Love them.....but I can't listen to Gaucho without thinking that everyone involved was drunk, high or both

There was probably at least a little of that going on on all their recordings! Look at this photo from "Countdown to Ecstasy". Notice anything strange?
