Answer: No one!

IMHO, no one in the world can bend a note like Betts. Listening to Statesboro off of "Play all Night" and Ramblin Man from "Live at Winterland"

He makes the guitar moan and wail in pain. i really feel like what Derek does to make the guitar sing with the slide, Betts did with his bending.

You have to concede that Dan Toler circa 1980 came damn close.

Sonny Landreth is pretty good too. I'm sure Sonny and Dickey have shared the stage a few times. What a treat!

Dickey is a great bender, no doubt. Also Albert King, BB King and Duane. Duane's bending on Stormy Monday is breathtaking.

I always thought that Dan was an excellent technical guitarist who played with very little emotion.

A lot of the time that is the case, but I have a GAB show fro Rockefeller's in the 80s where he rips up a solo on Things You Used To Do that has plenty of heat. He did bring it at times.

Some great answers, a couple not so much.

I would add Michael Bloomfield. And a fellow by the name of Hendrix....

Considering Albert King pulled the note down because his guitar was backwards and upside down, I'd say literally no one bends a note like Albert King.

Jeff Beck
Gary Moore
SRV

All great answers.

Jeff Healey - because of the way he played he could bend a note like very few.

Paul Kossoff - surely the ultimate in tortured, soulful bending.

Are we comparing how far the string is pulled, pounds of extra tension, friction against fret, vibrato, amount of soul per bend? I just don't see how string bending can be compared.

Albert King bends notes like Albert King
Jimi bends notes like Jimi
Duane bends notes like Duane
Buchanan bends notes like Buchanan
Kossoff bends notes like Kossoff
Jeff Beck bends notes like Jeff Beck

Betts bends stirings like Betts. So I suppose the answer is no one in the world can bend a note like Dickey Betts.

Actually, Otis Rush bends strings like Albert King (pulling down). I can't believe that Eric Clapton isn't getting kudos. His string bending on the Beano album set the standard for blues-rockers around the world and remains state-of-the-art still. Buddy Guy is the king of wild dissonant bends.
