Dickey plays a local bar on long island all the time Everyone I know who made the mistake to go see him said the same thing (and this has been said the last 4 or 5 years ) Hes good for a few songs and that it .Hes drunk hes arguing with his band and he acts like hes still a big star ,and doing the fans a favor by seeing him .. . I guess the TTB using him in a guest spot (very weird) last year at Beacon was a way to get more AAB fans to go see them (seems like without the AAB fan base TTB would be no more than a back up band ,which is where I seen them 3 years ago opening for the master Carlos Santana. and they were confusing ,Sussan has that Dickey syndrome ,with the start power thing .The best part besides Dereks playing was Santanas encore when Derek joined him as Carlos said" let me introduce you to the anointed one" Derek trucks .

You might want to get your facts a little straighter first. The TTB sells the Beacon very well and did not announce Dickey as a guest in advance, so it's hardly a ploy to sell tickets.

The band that opened for Santana in 2008 was the DTB, not TTB. I don't know what you mean by calling the DTB confusing, but that may be you that was confused, not the band.

I love DTB and TTB, but they are two totally different experiences. TTB is more akin to Sly, while DTB is more akin to Trane.

Domel,

I have to say that your post is flat out one of the most enlightening, heartfelt and insightful pieces of rock and roll critical journalism that I have had the pleasure to read in many, many monthss.

Somehow, some way -- through some magical, mystical gift you have for spinning commonplace words of dross into crystallized poetry on the written page -- you managed to malign Mr. Forrest Richard 'Dickey' Betts, the Derek Trucks Band and the Tedeschi Trucks Band in one blistering torrent of a venomous run-on paragraph.

Now I'm not so sure that Hunter Thompson is really dead -- you have summoned his caustic, drug-addled ghost and channeled his bombastic prose and his swaggering, unvarnished, no-holds-barred new-journalism style. And I find that incredibly refreshing.

If you're not already a Rolling Stone correspondent, then don't hesitate -- get your resume and writing samples over to Jan Wenner without delay. There is a promising career on your horizon, my friend.

One quick question if you don't mind a woodshedder like me asking -- who is this AAB of which you speak? I need to check them out, they sound phenomenal.

And to think it was you who discovered them!

Warmest regards,

-Rob J.

Dickey's guest spot with TTB was weird. At one point Susan stepped up to the mic to sing with Dickey and he practically pushed her away. She had to move to the back of the stage. He came off, not surprisingly, as arrogant and curmudgeonly. He did, however, do great Liz Reed and Blue Sky with them...

I am a huge Dickey fan and supporter. However I find no offense/harm in telling the truth as I see/have seen it. He isn't sober enough on stage (what he chooses to do is his own business-I am just talking about on stage), isn't the musician that he once was and seems to display no interest in returning to that form. I was clips of him with TTB and he wasn't very good. The last few times I saw him he could barely stand let alone play. His own band couldn't follow what he was doing. I am not taking anything away from his contributions to ABB, discounting that he was dismissed over the problem that Gregg himself is still struggling with or diminishing his place in music history. I am grateful to him for all the joy he has given me and feel awful about the way he was let go. I've watched the band-and those that the rest of the band members have-since 1992 and that is what I see today.

I'm glad I saw him in 2003 while in college in rural central PA. Yes he was drinking but he was not totally out of control blackout drunk and the alcohol or whatever other drugs he was on did not effect his playing.

First of all, I am the Sheriff.

Secondly, this is all pretty funny. I have seen Dickey play a few times in the past decade or so - he is cooked. It is truly over for him as a guitar player. To that, there is no doubt.

He was great once, but now I don't think Warren or Derek would even trust him to strum a little rhythm. If you have seen him, and have an unbiased mind, you know - he sucks.

Please let me know which local bar Dickey plays all the time. I would love to go to the show.

Be safe.

Funny but the four Beacon TTB shows in September are sold out, highest ticket $125 plus all the fees. Guess they can't stand on their own you moron

I stand corrected on the TTB opening for Santana ,which was at Mohegan Sun casino .I did mix up the 2 bandsit was DTB but susan did sing some songs with them that night ,and for me she confuses me ,with her grandiose attitude, like she is the draw my mistake .What I am not mistaken Is IMO TTB is sold out because of AAB fans and Derek fans not the TTB band itself .The fact that they only do a run like they are at the Beacon is solely on the back of ABB fans .,.watch what happens after the ABB runs stop .Find me next year this exact time and you will see what I mean .
As posted by many on the site and for sure at the beacon when she does her appearance with ABB shes annoying and adds nothing to the show .Give me the girl who Warren brings out from Govt mule ,way better talent IMO .AS FAR as dickey again Im hardly the only one who feels this way ,he washed up, has been for years . on this thread alone Im far from the only one who feels this way .AS for where he plays on LI besides the Paramount where he had pitiful reviews for that show he Plays MULCHAYES in Wantaugh Long island .he always books his shows like he does in NYC around the ABB runs or jones Beach concerts when they play there .and even for only $25 your better off seeing the tribute band Blue Sky that blows the roof off the place compared to Dickey .Nothing personal folks .

No he did not. You are definitely misreading the whole thing - watch the video again.

Susan steps up and tries to share the mic with Dickey on the chorus of Blue Sky, and he is trying to let her in to sing. However, there is just not enough space for her to get close enough to the mic. Watch how Dickey attempts to let her in twice. It is likely he does not have much stage experience sharing mics and just didnt know how to position his body/guitar and sing at the same time.

If you watch after the chorus during Derek's solo, Dickey comes over to Susan and says something to her (probably a "sorry I couldn't make enough room for you") and they both have a chuckle about it.

WTF are you talking about? You have a whole lot of facts messed up, far more than you have correct. A story or an opinion based without facts is gibberish. I will leave it at that.

Why all this hating on Dickey? Leave the guy alone! He's been out of the ABB for nearly 15 years. I've had the pleasure of seeing him many times over those years and he and his band were always excellent. Has he had an off night or two?, probably, but then so have the ABB, the Dead and most every other working band. Ask yourself this, "Do you always bring your A game while at work?" If you answer honestly, than your answer was no. Well, the same applies for artists too. :-)

I don't think it is "hate"...it is just that every year someone feels the need to re-kindle this fire about the possibility of Dickey showing up at the Beacon. This stirs up emotion from both camps, those that feel he is still a guitar god who would be welcomed with open arms at a brothers show and those of us who have seen and heard numerous clips provided here by Mr. Betts' fans.

I think you must be cooked. At age 70, Dickey is still a hundred times as proficient at what he does than you will ever be at what you do - which is talk out of your butt.
